Thepresent invention relatesto an in proved eye protector or goggle-and has pa rticular reference to a ;goggle havingalens which may be placed into. and removed from; operative position quickly and read ly when desired. a
An important object of the provide an eye protectors of this character including an eye cup adapted to recelve a lens and having means disposed on the in terior of the cup abutting against the lens to hold the same in operative position and which may be removed from the cup when it is desired to replace or remove the lens.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an eye protector of this character wherein thelens may be removed when desired, while at the same time the eye protector can be constructed from a minimum number of parts and which will be comparatively inexpensive but rugged.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will; becomeapparent from the course of the following description.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete goggle.
Figure 2 is a section through one of the cupmembers.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the lens retaining means. I
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective of the eye protector illustrating a lens retaining means prior to its insertion into operative position.
In the drawings, wherein for the purposes of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates an eye protector in its entirety and comprises the eye cups 6 having a lens therein 7, the said cups beingconnected by means of suitable bridge 8 or the like," and the samein" having a head band 9 to hold place upon the users head.
In the past, many attempts have been made to construct an eye protector wherein the lenses are easily removed and in which the lenses will be held firmly in position and guarded against accidental displacement when the protector is in use. The present construction embodies means wherein the lenses can be easily-removed whileat the invention is .to
Q'sametime, when in-use the lensretaining members prevent accidental displacement or rattling of the lens.
The cup G is providedwith the fiange10 v against which the lens .7 is adaptedto abutl v.onlthe.inside of the said cup as clearly fi shownin, Figure 2. The interior ,of the cup isalso provided with the shoulder 11, shown-i in Figure 2, which shoulder extends from the diametrically opposed, points of the cup.
12 so that the portion 13 of the cup has no shoulder, as is clearly shown.- The bridge 8 is anchored to the cups by means of the members 14 which are sufficiently spaced from the flange 10 to permit of the insertion of the lens 7 and the lens retaining member 15.
The lens retaining member 15 is formed from preferably a single length of metallic wire which is bent to form the operating finger engaging portions 116. The ends 16 are spaced to permit the ring to be contracted KSO as to permit of the insertion within the cup 6. The finger engaging portions 16 are bent to form the links 17 which are disposed in a plane substantially parallel to the ring portion of the retaining member so that the links 17 willengage the shoulder 11 on the inside of the cup when in operative position.
To assemble the goggle thelens 7 is placed on the inside of the cup and is rested upon the fia-ngelO. The ring, or lens retaining member 15 is then placed within the cup in contracted position so that it will follow be tween the member 14 .and the lens. The easiest way is to slide the finger engaging portions down at the end 13 and after the ring'portionl5 is'in engagement with'the lens, the whole retaining'member is twisted around until the links 17 engage the shoulder 11, thus preventing accidental displacement ofv the lens. I 1' Of course, it is desirable to form the retaining member from resilient material so that there will be a slight pressure on the lens at all times. If it is desired, a washer may be used between the lens and flange or the lens and retaining member, or both, so as to prevent any possible movement of the lens, or chipping of the edges thereof.
It'is to be understood that the Jformof the invention herewith shown and described 'is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subj oined:
claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1- claim-; V
1'. In a device of the character described, a tubular eye cup having a lens seat at its outer end having a shoulder on the inside of the tube extending a part Way only therearound parallel to the lens seat and spaced therefrom intermediate the ends of the eye cup'andvhavin'g also a projection extending into the cup on the side opposite the" shoul der, and a spring having a'por'tion lying against the lens, a portion at right angles to'the first portion and extending; along? the inside all of the eyecu'p', a portionpa'r'allel to the first portion and-engaged the shoul d'er on the inside of the tube ofthe" eyecup5 of the tube parallel to the lenssea-t and spaced therefrom; intermediate the ends of.
the eye cup, a bridge connection on one side of the eye cup having a portion projectlng into the tube thereof a spring having a portion lying against the lens and extending under the projection of the bridge connection into the eye cup, a portion at right angles to the first portion and extending along the inside Wall of the eye'cup, anda portion-par- 9.1161 to the first portionengaged by the shoulder on the inside of the tube ofthe eye cup. 7
