TES PATENT -OFFICL l -MiiANsro'n SECURING BARREL malins-f Appiianon f flied. Mayao,
This 4invention*relates to the class of barrels, and hasespecial-reterence ,-to themeans for securing Aheads to .the barrel body.v j
V.Some of the objects of' the present inven-v tion are: to provide an improved means for permanently orremovably securing a head-` to a barrel end; to providel a {luid-proof 'joint between the head and the barrel end; to provvide means of the indicated charactercaf pable of withstanding extremely lrough handling and comparatively *greatl -pressure externally or internallyexerted.thereon or applied thereto.
The nature. of the invention andjits dis-M tinguishing features and advantages will ap pear when the following specification is read, p
in connection with the accompanying drawing,'in which v v Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a barrel end andthe means employed for securing a Figure 2 is a plan view with parts broken away to illustrate more clearly certain features of the invention; j
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional vView taken on the line 3-3 of F igure- .1; y
Figure 11 i's a perspective view. of. .the bevelledl ring forming-a parti of .the securing means; and
.Figure 5 is a perspective-view of one of the wedge members.
Thepresent invention contemplates the securement' ofheads to barrels of the kind used for containing acids and the like, and for the production of a fluid-proof joint Vbetween the contiguous portions of the heads and the barrel ends, respectively, to prevent leakage, and also that the joints will be capable of withstanding extremely hard'shocks and any comparatively great pressure whether externally ory internally exerted thereon.
Referring now more particularly to the several views of the drawing, it will be apparent that there has been shown a barrelr end 10, a head 11, and means 12 orsecurmg the headv11 to the barrel'end 10. The barrel end 10 has a bead 13. The head 11 consists of a crown 14 and a rim 15 rhaving a flange 16. The barrel parts are of metal and are usually lined with rubber so as to el'ectively retain the acid contained therein.
The means 12 for securing the head 11 to the barrel end 10 comprises a ring 17, a plurality of wedge members 18, and a plurality of ring forming channel members 19. The ring 17 is bevelled asV at 20. The said ring 17 1927-. sriai. No; 11963143. l'
is ,arrangedon and surroundsthe barrel end 10m contact'therewith Y Thebead 13 pre yvents the ring fromslipping down or from moving beyond-a certain-point. `After the ring 17 is in, place thebarrel end 19 has,
formedfthereon a flange 521D contiguous to whichthe ring 17 will be disposed. The
wedge members areadapted to co-actwith.`
the bevelled edge 20 of the ring 17, each of` said y,members 18 ybeing bevelled as at 22 yfor this purpose.v Eachwedge member 18 has aV groove which accommodates a portionof the bead 13 and the barrel end lOwhen the member 18 is in place. Each of the members 18 will be of metal and will -be flexible. In the ployed, each being semi-circular, anduitwill therefore belunderstlood'that when thetwo members 18 are brought `together they .will
`form a ring. Members 19, each being in the form of `a channel, will consist of a web 24:',
andflanges 25v and 26.

The channel members 19 will then be assoresent instance twomembers 18 are em-l p thejhead 11 in placer the parts areassembled asl follows: The ring ciated in ring forming relationship which Vwill bring the flanges 25, respectively, ofthe members 19 over the flange 16 of the head l1, the flanges 26, respectively,- under the wedge'members 18, andthe webs 24, respectively, in contact with the wedge members 18. A suitable clamping device is then brought into use to apply pressure on the channel members 19 tobring them together. This will cause pressure to be transferred by the webs 26 to the wedge members 18, setting upVco-action betweenv the bevelled portions 22, respectively, of these members and the bevelled portion 20ct the ring 17. This coaction of the bevelled portions respectively on the members 18 and ring 17 will cause impingement of the members 18 and the flanges 26, and at the same time Will cause the flanges 25 to lbear or press on .theflange 16 of the head 11 and the ring 17 to bear against or press on the flange 21 ofthe barrel end 10. As a consequencetanefectivefand extremely tight joint will be established be- .i tween the langeili, of ythe head 1l and the..
