This invention relates to improvements in ,devices for delivering" register slips'.
On fast non-stop passenger and ,freight trains it is often necessary for the trainfmen to deliver messages "of importance t0 vagents, o craters, or dispatchers `along the' route. 'Illiis isI now accomplished by the tra-1n man wrapping a register slip or message around a stone, piece of coal, iron bolt, piece of wood or other convenient heavy object, any of which would cause injury to a person should he be struck by the same. Consequentlyv when a message is thrown from a train in this manner the person to'receive the message, afraid of being struck, will stand uite clear of the train and in a protected p ace, and often, especially at night, he can not find the thrown Vmissile after the train has passed. If the message is not secured to a heavy object. and is thrown loose, it flutters along with the draught of the train and is usually lost. v
It is, therefore, the primary object of the present invention to overcome the above objections by providing a simple device for the delivery of registry slips which may be used with safety and effectiveness.
A further object of the invention is to provide a delivery device of the class described which is flexible andwhen thrown from a train it will hit dead and remain at the point thrown without bounding or rol1- ing away.
A further object of the invention is to provide a delivery device of the class described which is indestructible, and which may be rolled or bent into a convenientl space saving shape by operators for redistribution from time to time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a delivery device of the class described arranged to securely grip a message or register slip so that the same can not become inadvertently detached therefrom and which may also be painted any suitable bright color for ready visibility.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for delivering register slips which is of very simple construction, is strong and durable, is inexpensive to manufacture, and is well adapted for the purposes described.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved device for the ldelivery of register slips and its Part-S and Cmbinatons as Set faith fili the `Claim and all equivalents thereof.
,In the accompanying drawing in which the sanie reference characters indica-tefthe saine yparts iny all of the views :i i
" Fig, 1 is ya side view of the improved de livery device showing the position vit is held in when thrown from a train;y I
Fig. 2 is a view on a smaller scale showing the shape into which the device will bend or flex after hitting the ground; i
Fig. 8 is a view on a smaller scale showing the shape into which the device may he bent and secured for storage and shipment;
Fig. 4 is a view of a form slip such as is intended shall be used with the device; and
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 1 of the drawing'it will be seen that the device is normally of elongated form, preferably. being about fourteen inches from end to end, and is formed of a heavy, covered copper wire of a suitable gauge.
The wire 8 forming the center or'core of the device extends from end to end while the covering 9 is removed from each endof the wire, as at 10 and 11.
One end portion of the device is curvedr or hooked as at 12 while the uncovered portion of the wire loop 13. v i
The uncovered portion of the opposite end of the wire is bent with a straight olf-set portion 14 and is then looped around, as at 15, and extended back inwardly, the extended portion having an off-set portion 16 adja-L cent the other olf-set portion 14, and terminating in a loop 17. The shape of the bent and uncovered portion of the wire just described forms a clip having two pairs of engaging surfaces. Said clip is adapted to have inserted thereinto a folded form slip or message 18 and the same is securely held against undesired removal by the two pairs of engaging surfaces, as shown in Fig. 1.
It is intended that a number of the delivery devices be put into each engine cab. The form 18, such as is shown in detail in Fig. f1, is furnished with each delivery device placed in theengine cab. Each form slip has printed thereon indicia to cover any contingency and adjacent each line of inat that endis formed 1n a dicia 19 a` circle 2O is printed. Now, if the engineer desires to make a report when passing the next agent or dispatcher he will punch a hole in the circle adjacent the pertinent indicia line on a slip, which hasbeen signed before starting the run, and fold the slip and insert it into the clip portion of the delivery device. Then, when the train is passing the desired point, the delivery device will be thrown straight downwardly from the train in the manner shown in Fig. l. On striking the ground, the device will bend or flex somewhat, as shown in Fig. 2, und will therefore land dead. Due to its visible color and the fact that it lands dead, the agent will readily locate the delivery device after the train has passed. From time to time the agents muy bend :1nd fasten the ends of euch device together, as shown in Fig. 3, und send the saine to headquarters for redistribution to trains.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the improved delivery device for register slips is of very simple and novel construction, and is well adapted for the purposes Set forth.
What I claim as in invention is:
A register slip delivery device, consisting of a readily bendablc wire member, one end portion of the sinne being bent longitudinally adjacent its major portion with :L puir of inwardly oiisetportions to forni :i double gripping clip und the other end portion oi said Wire member being curved to form u contact end.
ln testimony whereof, l :ifiix my signature.
