This invention relates to lighting fixtures.

The general object of the invention is to provide an improved lighting fixture which is particularly adapted'for use in illuminating public highways.

Beforc my invention, hollow lamp posts have been frequently'broken on account of the fact that the base was without reinforcing means so that a blow on the post very easily broke it. It is accordingly one of the specific objects'of the invention'to provide a lighting fixture wherein the base of the post or standard is provided with strengthening means so arranged that blows upon the lamp post will not tend to break the same.

Another object of the invention is to provide a sectional lamp post which is so constructed that either a'single or a plurality of lamps may be arranged upon the top of the post. a

'A further object of the invention is to provide a street lighting fixture having a post with a U-shaped support for twin lamps wherein a' removable bracing member reinforces the armsof the support;

Referring to the drawing by reference characters I have shown at 10 a lighting fixture embodying the features of my invention. This fixture may comprise the base 11, the standard or post 12, and the lighting element 14:. The base 11 and post 12 are preferably made as a hollow casting of metal or cementitious material.

The base portion 11 of the standard is preferably hollow and is shown as provided with an annular inturned flange 16 which is provided with bosses 17 having apertures 18 for securing the lighting fixture in position.

base of the post has caused considerable inconvenience since in order to economize on metal it has been necessary to make the base quite thin. As a consequence blows upon the post tend to fracture the base. To overcome these difficulties 1 provide internal ribs 20 These ribs preferably extend from the flange 16 inwardly a sufficient distance to provide the proper strength and to prevent breaking of the post adjacent its point of support.

The upper part of the post 12 is shown as provided with a cylindrical projection which is adapted to receivethe lighting fixture.

In using lighting fixtures of the character described it is customary to provide one, two or more lamps upon the top of the post. The number is usually varied to meet the local requirements and frequently after the post is installed it is found that an additional light is necessary. Totake care of this situation I have constructed the post so that it is adapted to receive interchangeable lighting units so that as conditions change the number of lighting unit-s may be altered.

In Fig. 1 one lighting fixture is shown as arranged upon the post 12, while in Fig. 2 a twin fixture is shown which maybe substituted for the single fixture shown in Fig. 1.'

The twin fixture comprises a bracket having a hollow base portion 26 which is provided with a rabbet 27 which is adapted to fit over the projection 25 on the post 12. The base portion of the twin lighting fixture is shown as provided with two hollow branches 28 which terminate at 29 in cylindrical bosses.

The reinforcing member for the bracket is shown. in Fig. 5 as comprising a cross piece 30 having cylindrical members 31 at each end thereof. The cylindrical members 31 are provided with recesses 32 which extend therethrough. The tubular members 31. are preferably of less length than the boss 29 so that the latter projects above the tubular members 31. The lamps 14 used on the twin structure may be identical with the lamps used on the single structure and the hollow bases of these lamps may fit over the protruding portion of the boss 29 and may be secured thereby suitable fastening means such as set screws (not shown). The

reinforcing member may be provided with an ornamental center portion 35 if desired.

When the single lamp is used the light unit 14 is inserted over the boss 25, as shown, and is secured there in a suitable manner.

After a lighting fixture has been installed with a single lighting unit 14 thereon whenever conditions arise to make the single li ht insufiicient the single light may be reatfily removed and the support-ing bracket for the twin lamps may be substituted therefor. The reinforcing member 30 is then arranged upon the supporting bracket member after which the light units 14 may be fixed in place to complete the structure. This change, it will'be evident, can be made without requiring that the post be disturbed and without discarding the single lamp unit 14, by merely supplying additional lamp units and by providing the supporting member for the twin lamps.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided an improved street lighting fixture which can beeconomically manufactured, which is strong and durable, and which can be quickly changed at a minimum of cost to produce increased illumination.

I claim:

1. A lighting fixture. comprising a base portion having an upwardly extending post thereon, said base portion comprising a hollow shell, said shell having radial ribs thereon for reinforcing the same, said ribs extending from said shell inwardly, an inwardly directed flange adjacent to the bet tom of said base, said flange being connected to each of said radial ribs, said flange coacting with said base to support said lighting fixture, said flange having holes therein for the reception of securing members.

2. In an ornamental lighting fixture, a

base member, a supporting post thereon, a

removable U-shaped bracket comprising s aced arms arranged on said post, a remova le brace member extending across the arms of said bracket, said arms each having a boss thereon and said brace member having post, an engaging member on each arm of the U, a removable brace member extending across the top of said U and having means for engaging the engaging members, and a lamp arranged above each end of the U.

4. In a street lighting fixture, a base, a post of fixed length on said base, said post having means on the top thereof for engaging a fixture, a lighting fixture comprising a single lamp and shade for use with said post, said fixture having means thereon for engaging said first mentioned means, means to removably secure the fixture on said post, a. second fixture com rising a supporting bracket, said bracket iaving a plurality of lights arranged in spaced relation thereon, said second fixture having means thereon for engaging said first mentioned means on said post, means for securing said second fixture on said post, said first fixture being adapted to be removed and said second fixture being adapted to be arranged in place of said first fixture on said post.

5. A street lighting fixture including a base and a post, a pair of interchangeable lighting fixtures adapted to be disposed on said post, both of said fixtures having means thereon for securing them upon the post, one of said fixtures comprising a holder for a single lamp, said holder having a lamp thereon and the other of said fixtures comprising a holder for a plurality of lamps, said second mentioned holder having a plurality of u wardly directed spaced arms thereon, eaci of said arms having a lamp thereon and removable means connecting said arms intermediate their length for brac ing them.
