J. P. D'ORAU IRONING TABLE Filed Dec. 26, 1925 I INVENTOR. \xl I AT RNEYS.
Patented June 19, 1928.
UNITED STATES JOHN P. DORAU, OF HORICON, WISCONSIN.
IRONIN G TABLE. 1
Application filed December 26, 1925. Serial mi. mm.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing boards, and more particularly to ironing boards of the folding type.
It. is one of the objects of the present nvention to provide an ironing board which may be easily and quicklyfolded to a closed position, in which position the boardmayv be readily stored and will occupy a minimum amount of space. i
A further object of the invention is to provide a folding ironing board having a foot latch, operable to unlock the board for folding.
A further object of the invention is to provide a folding ironing board in which the supporting legs may be securely locked in open position, so that they cannot accidentally close or provide an unsteady support.
A further object of the invention is to provide an ironing board which of very simple construction s strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purposes described.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention oonsists of the improved folding ironing board, and its parts and combinations asset forth in the. claims, and-all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the sameparts inall of the views:
a F ig. l isa side view of the ironing board in open position; a
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view thereof with the parts folded;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View of a leg to show a detail of'construction;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail sectional view taken at the point of intersection of the legs in Fig. 1 and looking upwardly; and
Fig. 5 is a detail view taken on line 55 of Fig. 4.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, it will appear that the numeral 5 indicates the ironing board or table proper, which may be of any suitable shape, but is preferably of rectangular form, except the front portion 5 which is tapered. A U- bracket 6 is secured to the undersurface of the board medially of its ends, and thereadjacent is a longer U-bracket 7. Another U-bracket 8 is secured to the under-surface of one end portion of the board.
Pivotally secured to the U-bracket 6 is a pair of downwardly diverging legs 9 having their upper end portions cut diagonally :to bear flatly against the under-surface of the board when said legs are unfolded. Secured to the medial portions of the legs 9, by
means of bolts 10, are a pair of braces 11 whose upper ends are pivoted to the. U bracket 7. Said braces force the legs 91out- Wardly, when unfolded, and. increase the divergence of said legs over the divergence in folded position, as will be more fully set forth. 1
A third leg 12, bifurcated at its upper end portion, is-pivotally securedto the end U-hracket 8, the arm portions 13 being mounted on a pivot bolt 114. The lower end portion of the leg 12 is formed with notch 15. A V-shaped rod or connecting member 1f; has its free end portionpivotally mounted on the bolts 10 adjacent the inner faces of the legs9. The opposite end of the V-n1emher 16 is looped asat 17,=to receive and slid ably move on the leg 12 and cooperating. with the looped portion is. a shank portion 17 having enlarged end portions engaged and held in position by portions of said looped portion, said member 17 forming a bottom portion forthe loop. I p ,1
Pivotally secured between theboltf 10. of each leg 9 andthe outer endof the pivot bolt 14 are a pair of link members18 and 19, pivotally connected together, asat 20 which are adapted to be folded or extended with respect to each other, as shownwand serve to limit the movement oft-heleg 9;.
Mounted on the upperface of the leg. 12 is a transverse brace 21 haVing-reducedend portions 22. lVhen the leg 12 is unfolded, said brace 21 bears against the legs 9 to force them to unfolded position and the movement of said brace, and consequently the outward movement of the leg 12 is limited by pins 23 projecting from the medial portions of the legs 9.
When the board is folded, all of the parts lie flatly against the undersurface of board 5, as shown in Fig. 2. In this position, the member 16 has moved inwardly on the leg 12 and the links 18 and 19 are folded with respect to each other. To unfold the board, it is only necessary to move the leg 12 awa from the board as far as possible, the looped portion 17 of the V or connecting member 16 riding outwardly on the leg12, causing the unfolding of the legs 9 and links 18 and 19. The reduced end portions of the brace 21 ride along the legs 9 and cooperate with the braces 11 to cause a further divergence of the legs 9, and hold them tirmly in open position. The board is locked in open position by forcing the shank portion 17 ot the member 16 into the notch 15 of the leg 12, as shown in Fig. 1. To unlock the board, it is merely necessary to step on the portion 17 to disengage the shank portion from the notch, and then the parts may be readily folded, as indicated.
To prevent the legs from slipping on polished floors, the outer ends ot the legs are provided with rubber caps or tips 25 which are formed with cups or holes 26 in order to create. a suction when the legs bear against the floor.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that. the in'iproved ironing board is of very simple and novel c mstrnetion, and is well adapted for the purposes set, l'orth.
What I. claim as my invention is:
1. An ironing table, comprising a board member, a pair of legs pivotally and uonslidably connected to the bottom portion thereof medially of its ends, a third leg pivotally connected to the bottom portion of the board at one end, said pair of legs and said third leg crossing each other medially of their length when moved away from the board, a connecting member connected to said pair of legs and movably and slidably associated with said third leg, and 't'oldable links between an end portion of said board and said pair of legs,
2. An ironing table, comprising a board member, a pair of legs pivotally and nonslidably connected to the bottom portion thereof medially of its ends, a third leg pivotally connected to the bottom portion of the board at one end, said pair of legs and said third leg crossing each other medially of their length when moved away from the board but being medially unconnected. a connecting member connected to said pair of legs and exteriorly slidably engaging said third leg, said third leg having a notch in its outer end portion to releasably engage said connecting member to l()(l the legs in open position, toldable links between an end portion of said board and said pair o't legs, brace members secured to said pair of legs and pivoted to a medial portion of said board, and a transverse brace secured to said third leg for hearing engagement; with said pair of legs.
3. An ironing table, comprising a board member, a pair of legs pivotally and non slidably connected to the, bottom portion thereot medially ot its ends, a third leg pivotally connected to the botton'i portion oi? the board at one end, said pair of legs and said third leg being crossed when moved away from the board, a connecting member connected to said pair of legs and slidahly engaging said third leg, 'toldable links between an end portion ol said board and said pair olf legs, and lu'ace members secured to and bearing against outer intm-mmliate portions of said pair of legs and pivoted to a medial portion of said board.
4. An ironing table, comprising a board member, a pair o'l outwardly diverging legs pivotally connected to the bottom portion thereof, a third leg pivotally connected to the bottom portion ol. the board, said pair of legs and said third leg being crossed when moved away from the board, a pair of braces pivotally connected to the bottom portion of the board outwardly of the pivotal conncctions of said pair of legs, said braces being rigidly connected to intermediate outer portions of the pair of legs and exerting a. pressure on the same when said legs are in unfolded position, and a connecting member pivotally connected with said pair of legs and slidably mounted on said third leg, said third leg having means for releasably locking said connecting member.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature.
JOHN P. DORAU.
