UNITED STATESA PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY F. CARES, OF ESSING-TON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
BLADE FASTENING.
Application filed October 11, 1927.
My invention relates to elastic fluid tnrbines, more particularly to blading therefor, and it has for its object to provide improved means for securing turbine blades to a Wheel or rotor.
Apparatus made in accordance with my` invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which the View is a sectional detail showing my improved blade fastening means.
Referring non7 to the drawing more in detail, I show a turbine Wheel or rotor 10 provided with intermediate and lateral peripheral flanges 11 and 12. The intermediate peripheral flange 11 provided with lateral projections or serrations 13 and 14,
Each of the blades 15 has its root portion 16 bifurcated to provide furcationsl'( and 18 arranged to fit over the intermediate peripheral flange 11. The opposed faces of the furcations 17 and 18 are spaced apart a distance greater than the thickness of the flange 11 and such opposed faces are provided with serrations 19 and 20. The serrations 19 directly engage the seri-ations 13, while the serrations 20 are spaced from the serrations 14. Filling piece means 21 is provided for the blading, there preferably being one piece for each blade, and the filling piece means is laterally serrated indicated. at 22 and 23, the serrations 22 engaging the serrations 14 and the serrations 23 engaging the serrations 20.
After the blading is assembled and the filling piece means is inserted so that there is inter-engagement of the projections or serrations in the manner just referred to, Wedges, indicated at 24 and 25 are inserted between the lateral flanges12 and the eX- ternal faces of the furcations 17 and 1.8, these Wedges preferably being short and they are inserted for the purpose of keeping the root portion of eaehblade from spreading.
While I have shown my invention in one form, it Will be obvious to those skilled in Vthe art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various changes and 'modifications, Without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or asare specifically set forth in the appended claims.
semi No. 225,563.
IVhat I claim is:
1. In a turbine, the combination of a Wheel having a peripheral flange provided with late lal projections, blades having bifurcated root portions, the fureations of which are spaced apart a distance greater than the thickness of said flange and the opposed fac-es of said fnrcations having internal projections, the projections of one furcation of each blade engaging the prom jections at one side of said flange, and .filling piece means arranged between the other furcation and the flange and having lateral projections engaging with the projections on opposed faces of said furcation and. of said flange.
2. In a turbine, the combination of a Wheel having intermediate and lateral peripheral flanges and the intermediate peripheral flange being provided with lateral projections, blades having bifurcated root portions, the furcations of which are spaced apart a distance greater than the thickness of said intermediate flange and the opposed faces of said furcations having internal projcctions, the projectionsl of one `fureati m of each blade engaging the project-ions at one side of said intermediate flange, filling piece means arranged between the other furcation and the intermediate flange and having lateral projections engaging With projections on opposed faces of said fureation and of said intermediate flange, and Wedge means arranged between external faces of said furcations and said lateral flanges.
3. In a. turbine, the combination of a. Wheel having a peripheral flange provided with lateral serrations, blades having` bifurcated root portions, the fui-cations of which are spaced apart a distance greater than the thickness of said flange, and the opposed faces of said fui-cations having internal serrations, the serrations of one furcation of each blade engaging ythe serrations at one side of said flange, and filling piece means arranged between the other fui-cation and the flange and having lateral serrations engaging withserrations on opposed faces of said furcation and of said flange.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 5th day of October, 1927.
HARRY F. CARES.
