UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. SPREEN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO ELECTRIC REFRIGERA- TION CORPORATION. OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
REFRIGEBATION.
Application filed February 21,` 1927. Serial No. 169,753.
My invention relates to refrigeration, and particularly to providing sealing means for the joints between the cabinet and the doors aording access to the compartments thereof,
and the principal object of my invention is to provide new and improved means of this type. In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part of this application I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume, and in these drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a refrigerator cabinet embodying my invention,
while Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2' of Figure l.
The embodiment of my invention shown herein comprises a refrigerator cabinet 11 having compartments 12 and 13 provided with openings 14 and 15 affording access thereto, doors 164 and 17 for closing said openings, and sealing means for sealing the joints between the walls of the openings 14 and 15 and the doors 16 and 17.
The sealing means comprises a strip of spring metal 18 having one edge 2O attached to the wall of the cabinet 11 about each of the openings 14 and l5 by nails 21, or similar means, and having its free edge 22 bent inwardly, downwardly, and reversely upon itself to form a substantially fiat surface carrying a groove 23 having rounded edges 24 and 25. The edge of each of the doors 16 and 17 is fashioned with a groove 26 and a bead 27 which cooperate with the rounded edge 24 and the groove 23 of the spring metal strip 18 to form resilient sealing means between the walls of the openings 14 and 15 and the cabinet doors 16 and 17.
From the above disclosure it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that I have provided new and improved sealing means for the joints between the cabinet and the doors affording access to its compartments for sealing against the passage of'air.
' At the same time it also will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the embodiment of m invention herein shown and described may evariously changed and modified without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrlicing the advantages thereof,
the opening 'in said cabinet; of means for sealing the joint* between the walls adjacent the opening in said cabinet and said door, said means com rising a continuous strip of resilient metal aving one edge flanged for attachment to the edge of the Walls of said vcabinet adjacent the opening therethrough and a free edge projecting into the notch adjacent the opening in said cabinet, the portion ofsaid strip intermediate the edges being bowed to act as a spring, and a bead on said door contacting with the free edge of said strip.
2. The combination with a cabinet proi vided with a door opening, and a door for closing the opening in said cabinet; of means for sealing the joint between the walls adjacent the fopening in said cabinet and said door, said means comprising a sin le strip of resilient metal having one edge anged for attachment to the edge of the walls adjacent the opening and a free resilient body portion formin a groove, the free edge of said body portion and the portion joining the flange and the groove being so bowed as to form leaf springs, .and a non-metallic bead formed on said doors -to contact with the entire surface of the groove in said strip.
3. The combination with a cabinet provided with a door opening and a notch extending therefrom, and a door for closing the opening in said cabinet; of means for sealing the joint between the walls adjacent the opening in said cabinet and said door, said means comprising a strip of resilient metal having ay flange for attachment to the ed e of the walls within the opening and a bo y portion 'disposed in the notch ad'acent the opening in said cabinet, said bo y portion having formed therein' a groove and two bowed portions adapted to serve as leaf springs, and a bead on said doors to contact with the body portion of said strip.
The combination with a cabinet `protion and provided on the free edge with a bowed portion adapted to serve as leaf springs, the two bowed portions retaining the body portieri substantially parallel to one side of the notch about the opening, and a bead integral with the wooden facing of said door, said bead being so formed as to contact with the entire surface of said body portion.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto aHiXed 20 n1 y si gndture.
CHARLES C. SPREEN.
