PATENT i OFFICE.

` GARBAGE-CAN COVER HOLDER.
Application led August S, 1926. Serial 'No. 128,061.
My invention relates to garbage cans, and more particularly to a garbage can cover holder. j
:The object of my invention is to provide a garbage can having a cove-r with means for holding the. cover from becoming detached,`
or separated from the can .and for holding the` cover inl contact with the side wall of the can when removed `from the top thereof, thereby preventing the cover from becoming mislaid, lost, or damaged after removal `from the top` of the can, which loosening and damaging of the can cover is a great annoyance with the present type of garbage cans.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a garbage can cover holder which possesses advantages in points of simplicity and efficiency, and, at the same time proves itself comparatively inexpensive in point of manufacture.
With the above and other objects .in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter more' fully described and finally pointed ont inthe claims hereto appended. Y
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference denote similar parts throughout the severalviews:
Fig. 1, is a perspective View of a garbage can embodying the features of my nvention.
Fig. 2, is a top plan view thereof with the cover removed from the top thereof and supported by the cover holder.
Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional view of the garbage can showing the cover supported by the cover holder.
Referring to the drawings, the reference numeral l represents the usual cylindrical type of garbage. can for domestic use having the carrying bail 2 and provided with the usual dome shaped cover 3 having the 'can engaging flange, or rim 4. The flange 4 is provided with a suitable opening 5 through which passes a suitable cover member 6.
The cover guide member 6 which is vertically disposed, is suitably fixed tothe side `wall of the can l near the up'per edge thereof and fixed at its lower end to the wallv of the can near the lower edge of the can 1. The cover guide member 6 has the inwardly directed upper Yleg section 7 and the lower guide y inwardly amaai leg @aan s for holding the supporting member 6 in spaced parallel relation with the wall of the can, as is evident from F ig. 3. The upper end leg section 7 of the vertically disposed support-` ingmembcr 6 is shown as passing through the wall of the can and then bent, as at 9, to engage the inner face of the can to which it is lixed by suitable fastening means. This arrangement permits the vflange 4. of the cover 2 to snugly fit over the upper edge of the can so as to prevent, as nearly as possible, any of the obnoxious odors escaping froin the can, Vwhentlie cover' 2 is in a closed position upon the can. y
A cover supporting member 1() Iis suitably fixed such as by rivets, or similar fastening devices, at each end, to the wall of the can l at a suitable point intermediate the upper and lower edges of the can 1. The cover supporting member 10 is U-shaped and is lixed to the wall of the can in such a manner as to be disposed in a horizontal position and at right angles to the vertically disposed guide member 6, as clearly shown in the drawings. shaped cover supporting member or band 10 passes the vertically disposed member to the outer face thereof and is spaced a suitable distance therefrom so as to act as a rack to engage the domed top of the cover when the cover is removed from the top of the can and allowed to slide down the guide member 6 to the lowermost end thereof.
The horizontally disposed cover embracing member associated with the vertically disposed guide member serves to provide a skeleton pocket to receive the lower portion of the cover when it is removed from the top of the can and disposed edgewise to the side thereof to prevent lateral or backward displacement of the cover and hold it at a subn stantial right angle to its closed position.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that a can provided with the cover holding means shown in the drawings will prevent the cover from becoming detached from the can which detachment usually results in the misplacement of the cover, the loss thereof, or damage thereto.
The many advantages of the herein described invention will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
