RADIATOR CAP.
Application filed Iune23, 1927. Serial 110. "860,880.
My invention relates automobiles. I The object of my invention is to provide a radiator cap consistin of an annular body portion, a hinged mem er hinged thereto and a cap cover pivotally-mounted on the. hinged member eccentrically of the center of the cap to a radiator cap for cover so that the cap cover can move with the v hinge for opening and closing the bodypor tion, and can also move laterally thereof in order to effect a locking between the cap cover and body portion through a bayonet joint or other interlocking means. Thus, it is my object to accomplish the use of" a hinged cap cover, which will have lateral movement of the body within a limited degree to permit of the locking and unlocking of the cap cover.
It is a'further object of my invention to provide in this combination the additional cooperating feature ofa yielding diaphragm closure carriedv by the cap en aging a sealing member carried by the body of the radiator cap and so arranged as to permit of the adjustment of'one to the other, and a yield- .ing closure to be efli'ectedirrespective of the exact position and lateral location of one member with respect to the other as a result of'the lateral movement provided by the eccentric pivoting of the cap cover on the hinge; Thus, it is'my object to provide a yielding sealing means adapted to this lateral movement to revent rattling at the hinge. It is a further object of my inven tion to provide means on'the hinge of not only eccentrically pivotally supporting the cap cover but of limiting the movement laterally thereon and also with respect to the body and the radiatorcap. t 1
Referring to the'drawings: Figure '1 is a central vertical section through the closure showing it in closed position; j
v Figure 2 is the same as Figure 1 showing it in open position; Figure 3 is a sect'on taken on the. line 3- 3 of Figurel; r 4 Figure 4 s a section taken on the line 4-4 of'Figure 2. v
In the drawings there is shown a portion of a radiator having a neck 10 to which the radiator cap or closure is adapted-to be secured. Said closure comprises the body portion 11 which is screw-threaded upon the neck of the radiator in the usual manner and locked in position thereon by the headless screw 12. Said body portion is provided with an annular opening therethrough in the usual manner,which is surrounded by a gasket ring 13 to provide a seat for the closure cap. On the forward side .of -the body.-
there is an upwardly-extending keeper 14 and on the other side thereof there is a recessed portion for. receiving the hinge mounting of the cap covert he hinged cap or cover portion of the closure comprises the usual diskcover 15 having detachably mounted on the top thereof 'an' ornamental figure or device '16. The cover is provided with a central opening 17 therethrough and an annular boss 18 surrounding said opening, to which. is secured a resilient retaining ring 19 suitably spaced from the shoulder 20 andformed on the cover so as to receive therebetween a substantially oval supporting member 21. Said oval member is constructed at one end in, the form of an eye or loopwhich surrounds the boss 18 and is so' fashioned as to be movable laterally with respect thereto, as best illustrated by the positions of the cover 15 with respect to the supporting member 21, as shown in Figures 3 and 4;;
The member 21 is held in place and pivotally connected with the cover through the pivot pin or rivet 22- and it isfurther provided with a projecting portion 23 which is pivotally mounted on the body portion of the closure by the hinge'pin 24. By means of this arrangement, it will 'be apparent that the cover 15 will have lateral movement with respect to the support 21 about the secured in position on the cover by a riveting over the end of the boss 18, thereby making this joint steam tight. Said spring seating disk is so positioned that, when the cover is in closed position, as illustrated in Figure 1, its edges bear resiliently against the gasket 13, thus sealing the opening and preventing escape of the contents of the radiator or other container. Said disk is held under spring tension in its sealing position, and the cover in its closing position by the engagement and interlocking of the latch projection 27, formed on the under surface of the cover adjacent the forward edge thereof, with the keeper 14.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that the cover may be readily closed by swinging the same to closed position about the hinge pin 24, and causing the cover to be i in the position relative to the supporting Letters Patent, is:
While the invention has been described in detail with respect to a radiator cap, it is apparent that it is applicable to various types of closures for containers, and the spring securing disk may be either formed of spring metal as illustrated herein, or of a rigid character having a spring support or mounting whereby it will yield with respect to the cover and supporting member.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by 1. In a radiator cap, a stationary body portion, a hinge member hinged thereto, and a cap cover eccentrically pivoted on said hinge.
