Roofing paper containing tar is difiicult to out because of the liability of'tar adhering to the cutting element.

The object of in present invention is the provision of a roo ng paper cutterin which the cutting disc or knife disc turns under the influence of oil and wiping means with the result that the liability of tar in the paper being cut adhering to the knife disc is eliminated.

To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this spec1fication:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cutter constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention.

Figure 2 is a view of the same partly in plan and partly in section.

Figure 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1 with some of the parts in elevation.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1, and showing the means for holding the wiping means in the housing.

Figure 5 is a detail perspective illustrative of one of the wiping members.

Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.

Among other elements my novel cutter comprises a housing 1, and a handle 2 connected to and extending upwardly and rearwardly from the housing. The housing 1 is open at its bottom, and arranged in the transverse center of the housing is an ap-.

propriately mounted rotary knife or cutting disc 3, the peripheral portion of which is sharpened by bevelling at opposite sides thereof as designated by 4. As clearly brought out in Figures 1 and 3, the rotary knife or disc. 3 protrudes below the lower side of the housing 1.

Carried by the housing 1 and arranged above the center of movement of the knife 3 is an oil cup 5, the discharge of which is disposed as best shown in Figure 3.

Disposed in the housing 1 and at opposite sides of the peripheral portion of the rotary knife 3 are wiping members 6. The said wiping members 6 are preferably, though not necessarily, of felt and arcuate in form as Wlll be understood from Figures 1 and 1927. Serial No. 194,778.

5. The wiping members 6 are secured in the housing 1 through the medium .of short screws 7, Figures 1 and 4, the said screws 7 being threaded in the side walls of the housing 1 and being turned into plates 8 embedded in and appropriately secured to the members 6, by preference.

At about the point illustrated relative to the discharge of the oil cup 5, the wiping members 6 are subject to the action of screws 9,.Figures land 3, the said screws 9 having for their function to press and hold the wiping members against the peripheral portion ofthe knife 3 so that the impregnation of the members 6 with oil will be assured, and the said members 6 will be enabled to adequately remove from the peripheral portion of the knife any tar or other sticky substance that may adhere to the peripheral portion i of the knife.

In the above connection it will also be appreciated that the application of oil to the peripheral portion of the knife will lessen the liability of the knife picking up tar or other sticky substance inthe roofing paper, and in that way will increase the efiiciency of the knife in its cutting action'when rolled over the roofing paper to be out.

It will further be appreciated that through the medium of the handle 2 the cutting device may be manipulated conveniently and with but little effort on the part of the operator. I I

I have entered into a' detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as limiting myself to the constructionand relative arrangement of parts as disclosed, my invention being defined by my appended claim within the scope of which modifications may be made without departure from my invention. 1
