UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADJUSTABLE AIR QARIVBURETOR AND EQUALIZING VAPORIZER.
Application filed April 13, 1927. Serial No. 183,555.
The present invention relates to an adjustable air carburetor and equalizing vaporizer and aims to provide a device of this nature which may be attached to the inlet pipe of an internal combustion engine for feeding moist air thereto in such a manner as to insure the vaporization of any raw gasolene passing through the inlet pipe.
A still further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this nature which is simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly effcient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the device, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section therethrough.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the device comprises an elongated body having at the top thereof a longitudinally extending relatively narrow passage way 5 adjacent one end of which is a depending abutment 6 and at the bottom thereof spaced inwardly from the abutment 6 there is formed a shoulder 7. The other end of the passage 5 leads into a longitudinally disposed relatively wide passage 9 connected to the passage 5 by by-path 10. Another passage is provided below passage 9 as, at 11 and is connected or communicated with passage 9 by by-path 12. A by-path 13 connects the other end of the passage 11 with a passage let which leads into a distributing reservoir 15 and a confined by-path 16 leads from the reservoir 15 into a reservoir 17 and the reservoir 15 also communicates with a path 18. Suitable passage forming devices 19 and 20 are engaged with the body to communicate with the reservoirs 17 and 18 respectively and are connected with a vapor fuel mixture intake pipe 21. An opening 22 is formed in the top of the body to communicate with the left hand end of the passage5 and has threaded therein a nipple 23 5 in which is threaded another nipple 24 having a restricted end opening-25 against which is seated a ball 26 and a spring 27 impinges against'this ball to normally hold it seated and against a spider 28formed in the nipple 23. A nipple 30 is threaded in an opening 31 formed in the top of the body adjacent the other end of the passage 5 and has threaded therein a needle valve 32 the pointed end of which is adapted to seat in a recess 33 formed in the'bottom wall of the passage 5. It is obvious that the spring 27 may be tensioned to regulate the intake of the air by screwing the nipple 24 into the nipple 23 and the passage of the air through the device may also be regulated by proper manipulation of the needle valve 32 which is threaded in the nipple 30.
With this device the gasolene vapor fuel mixture flowing through the pipe 21 sets up a suction in the device and causes the entrance of air into the mixture to assist greatly in the carburetion thereof.
It will be seen that'the device is oomparatively simple in its construction, and therefore may be manufactured at a relatively low cost, but nevertheless will prove strong and durable, and thoroughly eflicient and reliable in operation. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by Way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above descrip tion. It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as herein after claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is V 1. A device of the class described comprising an elongated body having a zig-zag passageway extending therethrough, means for connecting the body to an inlet vapor fuel pipe and connecting with one end of the passageway, and check valve means for allowing-the. intake of air at the other end of the zigzag passageway, and a needle valve associated with said passageway to regulate the passage of air therethrough.
2. A device of the class described comprising an elongatedbody having a zig-zag passageway extending therethrough, means for connecting the body to an inlet vapor fuel pipe and connecting with one end of the passageway, and check valve means for allowing the intake of air at the other end of the zigzag passageway, a needle valve assooiated with said passageway to regulate the passage of air therethrough, and means for adjusting the check valve to regulate the intake of air.
3. An attachment oi the class described comprising an elongated body having a zigzag passageway extending tl ierethrou gh, an adjustable check valve at one end of the passageway to regulate the intake of air, a pair of conduit members connected with the other end of the passageway and adapted to be connected with a vapor fuel intake pipe, means for distributing the air at said other end of the passageway, and needle valve means adjacent the first end of the passageway for regulating the passageway of air tlierethrough.
In testimony whereof I have afitixed my signature.
ALFRED SHERROD.
