`This invention relates generally to improvements in apparatus for flushing toilets the provision of a fiushing apparatus in which the double acting valve and the koperating means therefor are constructed as a unit which can be readily inserted between and removed from the Vjunction between the water main and the supply pipe to the bowl.
It is a further object of they invention to provide in a fiushing apparatus anauxiliary valve seat for coacting with the valve body for insuringlof the main supply of water being directed toward the bowl supply pipe when the toilet is in use and for permitting of the draining of the said'bowl supply pipe when the main supply has been closed. l.
Among the other aims and objects ofthe present invention is to provide an .apparatus of the above character wherein the number of parts is few, the construction simple, the cost of productionlow and the efficiency high. l t

Referring now more particularly to the drawin s, there is provided, a toilet bowl l with `w ich communicates a supply pipe 2 leading `from a water main 3, a soil pipe 4 being connected with the outlet of the bowl.

This seat member 1s in the form of a sleeve, the medial portion of which isrestricted and perforated as at 11', the lower edge being bevelled at `12 to form the seat proper while anannular exterior shoulderl is `formed thereon for engagement with the shoulder 10 so thatthe auxiliary seat 11 may be supported withinthennion 6 above the main seat 9. Another union 14 of the threeway type is connected to theupper end ofthe union 6 and forms part of the main valve chamber, being connected at its horizontal branch with a drain pipe 15 to the sewer.`
` The valve consists of a body 16 the lower `end of which is recessed to receive a Washer 17 preferably formed of resilient material suchasy rubber and this lwasher coacts with the main seat 9 being releasably secured in the recess Aby a` fastener such as a screw 18 vthe headacting as a guide to facilitate an effective engagement with the seat 9. The opposite end y ofthe body is bevelled and rounded asfat 19 for `coasting `with the aux iliary seat`12 when the flushing apparatus ,is in use. `The bevelled endof the valve body is also provided with a recess 2O in y which the head 21 of the valve stem 26 is swivelled, connection being maintained by a jamb nut 22.
An elongated pipe casing 24 extends through the flooring or other support for the bowl 1 and is detachably connected to the upper union 14 while also arranged within the pipe casing is another ltubular casing 25 housing the actuating rod 23 carrying the valve. The casing 25 is in detachable engagement as by threads 27 with the auxiliary valve seat member 11 while the' rod 23 is also in detachable threaded engagement with the adjacent end ofthe valve stein 26. A suitable closure 28 in the form of. a double flanged cap is engaged with the upper ends of the casings 24 and 25. Preferablyv the inner iange 29 is elongated for slidable engagement with the casing 25 while the outer flange 3() is shorter and interiorly threaded for detachable and adjustable engagement with the casing 24. The cap is apertured to permit sliding of the rod therethrough.
Suitable ineans suoli as a coiled spring 31 is arranged about the valve actuating rod 23 while the respective ends bear `against the under surface of the cap 28 and a collar 32 on the rod, the spring being compressed to depress the rod and normally hold the valve body againstfthe seat 9. The springv also acts to yieldingly hold the toilet seat 4 in a raised position by reason of an adjustable securing element in the form of a. nut 33adjustably engaged on the projecting upper end of the rod 23 and above the loose engagement of the arm with said rod as clearly shown in the drawing.
The operation of the invention may be reviewed as follows:
The valve body `16 is operated by the actuating rod 423 and the toilet seat 4 and seats alternately at seat 9 and seat 12. When the toilet. seat 4 is depressed the rod 23 is raised by the engagement of the arm 5 with the nut 33, which `actionalso compresses the spring 31 until the bevelled end 19`of the body contacts with the seat 12. During this action water passes from the main 3, through pipes 7 and 2 to the bowl. lVhen the seat is released it is automatically raised by the spring 31 which latter also forces the valve body into engagement with the seat 9. The water in the supply pipe 2 thus flows back into the union or chamber (i, upward through the perforations 11 inthe seat member 11 and thence toand through the drain pipe 15.
It is noted that subsequent to the detachnient of the nut 33 and cap 28 the unit consisting ofthe rod v23, valve 16, rod casing and Vsleeve-like seat member 11 can be 'removed as a whole from the casing 24. This unit in place seats on the shoulder 10 and 1s held bythe cap 28. The cap 28 also acts as a means foradjusting the tension of the spring 31.

A valve comprising a three-wav union having a high pressure' valve seat therein, a tubular casing connected to said union and havin a drain outlet, a sleeve having a valve seat etachably seated within said union, a tube connected to said sleeve and extendin through said tubular casing, a cap secur to said casing for retaining said sleeve and tube therein, a valve rod extending through `said sleeve and tube carrying a valve body adapted to coactwithA said valve seats, and said sleeve having openings therein for establishing communication between said union and the drain outlet within said tubular casing. 3. A valve comprising a main three-way union having a stationary valve seat therein, an auxiliary three-way union connected thereto and having a drain opening, a tubularcasing connected tofsaid auxiliary union, avalve seat detachably supported within said main union, a tube connected to said detachable valve seat and extending through said tubular casing, a valve body coacting y with said valve seats, a valve rod connected to said valve body and extending through said tube, a cap detachably connected to said tubular casing. a flange formed with said cap Vand extending about said tube for retaining the detachable valve seat within said main union and a compression spring arranged between said rod and cap. i
