pipe 1, and a pipe section 18 which is in communication with the pipe 1 at a point in advance of the gate valve, as shown.
In the practical application of my cleaning means, when applied to a street corner sewer trap, as shown in Fig. 1, the main pipe 1 with its attached parts is located on the pavement adjacent the manhole of the sewer with the leg portion 3 held pendent in the trap and the nozzle member that carries the plug disk 6 projected toward the flange mouth of the off-take or sewer pipe 8.
The leg 3 and nozzle 32 are then pulled over to project the nozzle 32 into the said pipe 8 until the plug disk 6 seats in the flange bearing that surrounds the mouth of the pipe 8.
When thus positioned, the disk 6 is firmly seated, air tight, over the said mouth of the sewer pipe by means of a brace jack that consists of a lever 19 which extends up to near the top of the manhole, a slotted socket and a ratchet bar 21, one end of which engages the seat 32 in the elbow 31, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1.
After theparts are assembled as stated, a positive air tight closure for the disk 6 on the outer end of the sewer pipe, is effected by inflating the tubular gasket 11, which is done by operating the air pump carried upon the main pipe 1, as shown.
When thus applied, the gate valve 17 is opened and the hose street connection is turned on to allow the flushing water, under the normal pressure, to pass straight through the pipe 1 and eject from the nozzle end 33, against the obstructions in the sewer pipe.
In case the normal water pressure from the hose connection is not sufficient to clear the sewer pipe, and that is usually the case, when using the overhead flushing tank for toilets, &c., the gate valve is closed and the force pump is then brought into action which takes the flushing water, that enters the pipe 1, back of the gate valve, and delivers it, under forced pressure, back into the said pipe 1 at a point in front of the said gate valve.
lt is to be understood that while in Fig. 1 l have shown a ratchet lever and rack form of brace jack for holding the closure disk 6 in tight connection with the mouth of the sewer pipe, the said means may be modified to suit the special application of my sewer cleaning means. For example, when using the same for flushing toilet bowls, as seen in Fig. 3, a special form of gasket 11 is provided to suit the shape of the bowl and a yoke clamp L10 is used for holding the parts to their operative condition. Vhen applied to the toilet bowl, as in Fig. 3, the flushing pipe is extended up over and into the overhead flush tank.
Fig. t shows my invention adapted for flushing the sewer pipe or trap for kitchen sinks. When thus utilized, thenozzle end of the main pipe is externally threaded as at 35 to receive' a screw nut 36 that carries a pendent wedge collar 3T for engaging and spreading a rubber plug 38, to cause the said plug to fit air tight in the basin'outlet 39.
When used for cleaning the sewer trap for sinks, as shown, the sink is kept lled with water from the supply tap and the flushing hose is extended into the water and during the operation of cleaning the sink outflow pipe, the overflow or vent vfor the sink is closed by a-rubber pad as shown.
1n case there be more than one opening in the sewer trap during the application of my invention, another of my improved outfits could be used foretaking care of such other opening.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the drawing, the complete construction, the manner of operation and thev advantages of my invention will be readily apparent. Y
The said means can be compactly assembled, easily applied for use and when operatively adjusted, leffectively serve to disturb any collected matter within the sewer pipe and carry the same outward with the flushing water.
What claim is:
1. A sewer cleaning means comprising a nozzle adapted to be inserted intothe duct to be flushed, a member on the nozzle for closing the end of the duct that surrounds the nozzle and for holding the nozzle from being forced downward into the duct, means for forcibly holding the closure member on the ynozzle seated over the duct and other means for eecting a fluid tight sealing of the said closure member over the duct, and further means for forcing fluid through the nozzle into the duct, the said first named means consisting of a brace jack adapted to engage a part of the casing surrounding the duct to be flushed, and the nozzle;
2. A sewer cleaning means comprising a nozzle member adapted to be inserted into the duct to be flushed, means for sealing the said member in the duct, means for holding the said memberin the duct and means for forcing fluid through the nozzle into the duct, said means includinga main pipe in connection with the nozzle and with the fluid supply, a gate valve in themain pipe, a force pump having laterals, one of which communicates with the main pipe at the rear of the gate valve and the otherof which communicates with the said pipe in front of the gate valve, each vof the said lateralsincluding a back check valve.
