A. GOODSTONE ALARM OR SIGNAL DEVICE OPERATED BY THE FLW OF GAS To BURNERS Filed Jan. 22, 1927 I INVE NTOR fiazolfil oowb ATl'ORNE ADOI'IPE GOODSTONE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ALARM R SIGNAL DEVICE OPERATED BY THE FLOW OF GAS T0 BUBINEES.
Application filed lanuary 22, 1927. Serial No. 162,887.
L gas burner, jet or nozzle and the supply )1: gas thereto, a signal device actuated by he flow of gas therethrough, to give notice )1? the transmission of gas to the burner and .he like, especially when the valve controling the transmission of gas from the sup- )ly to the burner or the like, has been ac:
:identally opened or the. flame on the burner r the like extinguished without shutting off ;he transmission of gas thereto; and with ;hese and other objects in view, the inven- ;ion consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in eonstruction and operation, efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts ,of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in eachof the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a plan and sectional view of a burner showing one of my improved devices mounted 111 connection therewith.
Fig. 2 .is a section on'theline 2-2 of Fig. 3. f
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through my improved device indicating its mounting; and,
4 is a sectional detail view showing a modified use of the device.
In Fig. 1. of the drawing, 1. have shown for the purpose of illustratingone use of my invention, a gas burner 5 which may be of any conventional shape, form and construction, the burner 5' having a: tube 6' ex tending radially therefrom, the outer end of which is slightly enlarged to form the mixing chamber-7. On the enlarged end, is
an air regulating valve 8 into which the gas discharge tube 9 of a valve 10, coupled with a gas supply line 11 passes. I
i The above described construction may'be.
of the usual or commonly employed type such as used in single or mult ple'burn'er stoves, ranges and the like. In practice, I mount upon the tube 9, a tubular whistle body 12 which may be of any preferred design and construction, and which in the construction shown, is in the form of an elongatedthimble, one side of, which 'is provided with an aperture 13,'adjacent its closed end.
Mounted within the body 12, is at-block 14 having an inclined surface 15, which directs the gas discharge from the tube 9 into the chamber of the body 12 out through the aperture 13, and over the sharp edge 16 on the wall of said aperture, causing the whistle sound. The closed end of the body 12 may also be provided, if desired, with a small discharge aperture 17 through which the gas passing into the closed end of the whistle body may be discharged. 4
In Fig. 4 of the drawing, 1 have shown a modification, wherein a whistle body 12 similar to the body 12 is mounted in conjunction with an illuminating gas burner. ,In the construction-shown, the whistle body 12 is mounted upon the tubular gas supply 'member 18 which may constitu'te part of.
the yalve structure, as is common practice.- Encircllng and 'in spaced relation to thewhistle body 12 is.a tube 19, the upper end of which supports the usual tip 20 for producing the illuminating-flame, and the lower end of the tube 19 is provided with apertures 21' controlling the admission of air into the chamber 22 thereofand around the whistlebody 12 inorder to mingle the air with the gas discharged from the aperture 13 in sai whistle body, as well as the gas that may be discharged from thesmal'l aperture 17 at the closed end of said body.
In both uses of the invention shown and described, or in any other use thereof, it is desired "that the gas leading from the supply pipe directly, or through a. valve, passes into and through a whistle body, and the construction and arrangement will be such that wherr the burner or'nozzle of any kind or class is in operation, 'or in other words,
the gas is being burned or consumed in the usual manner, the whistld device will not function to any material degree; but, in the event that the flame be blown out; and the" supply continued through the whistle device, awhistle will be sounded to give warning of the faulty operation of the burner or other accessory or device. It will also be apparent, that 'in the event that the value controlliiig the supply of gas to a. burner sound an alarm notifying and informing or the like be accidentally opened, the escape of gas mm a room or com artment in its passage through the whist e device, will the occupants of the room or compartment of the inoperative or faulty functioning of the gas burner. In this way, the loss of life or injury to people in a-room or compartment, by becoming-asphyxiated, is obviated,
- thereoi, Itwill be'under'stood that while I have -shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, thaL I am not necessarily limited to these details% and various changes in-and modifications o the construction herein shown and described may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. 1
Having fully. described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is':- v
The combination with a gas appliance having an air and gas mixing chamber and a valve for controlling the transmission of gas into said chamber, of a whistle device coupled with said-valve and extending into said mixing chamber and into and through which the gas-for supply to said appliance is passed. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this v 20th day of January, 1927.
