Description

Parenteel May 29, 192s.
UNITED sTATEs 'PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD E. WILLIAMS, OF ROUND LAKE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO BILTRITE COLLAR COMPANY, A PARTNERSHIP COMPOSEI) OF HARRY COHEN AND CHARLES COHEN,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLD COLLAR.
Application led August 30, 1926. Serial No. 132,467.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
.The principal object of the invention is to improve the set and appearance of a soft or semi-soft fold-collar in use.
Other objects will appear in connection With the following description.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a front view in perspective of a fold-collar made in accordance with my invention in substantially the form assumed by the collar in use.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of the same taken on the broken line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar section showing a modication.
The collar includes a band, 1, and a foldover top, 2.
Inl Fig. 2, up of three plies or thicknesses of fabr1c, an inner ply, 3, an outer ply, 4,- and an intermediate or interlining ply, 5; and the fold-over top made up of two plies or thicknesses of fabric,-an inner ply, 6, and an ,j outer ply, 7.
In making the collar in accordance with my invention, I form the inner ply, 3, of
over top of the same integral piece of fabric, as shown in Fig. 2. a
I have also shown the outer ply, 4, of the band and the inner ply, 6, of the fold-over top made of the same `integral plece of fabric; but if desired they may be made of separate pieces of fabric in any known manner.
The plies of the band are inturned along their outer edges and secured together by stitching, 8.
The plies of the fold-over top are in like manner inturned along their outer edges and secured together by stitching, 9.
The intermediate ply, 5, of the band has a binding, 13, along its inner or upper edge and is secured along said edge adjacent to the fold-line of the collar by stitching, 10, to the outer ply, 4, only of the band. It
. will be observed that the binding is disposed along the fold line (Fig. 2) and entirely Within the band so as to mark the collar fold 1 and reinforce at the fold the outer ply of the fold-over top and the inner ply of the I have shown the handv made the band and the outer ply, 7, of the fold- A the edge of the interlining.
It will be observed that the binder 13 is secured to the interliner by the stitching 10 in such a Way that its folded portion is spaced from the edge of the interliner, whereby to give a soft collar edge at the fold and a more rounded effect, which greatly improves the appearance of the collar. The constructi'on and arrangement of the strip 13 insures that the collar will` fold accurately, and While giving the proper rigidity at the fold, at the same time affords a soft edge.
The integral piece or body of fabric which forms the inner ply, 3, of the band and the outer ply, 7 of the fold-over top is disconnected or free from the other plies of the top and band preferably from the edge stitching, 8, lof the band, to the edge stitching, 9, of the top, and particularly along and adjacent to the fold-line of the collar.
By Ythus having lthe integral ,memberl forming the inner band-ply, 3, and theouter fold-over top ly 7, of the band free from connection Wit the other plies ofthe collar 4along the fold-line of the collar, when the collar is folded and 'bent to curved form as in use, this integral member is permitted more or less freedom of movement independently of the other plies of the' collar vin assuming the curvilinear set which is desirable in use; andthe tendency of the outer ply of the fold-over top to Wrinkle or buckle when forced to assume ,the curvilinear set-is practically eliminated.
The freedom for self-adjustment of the inner ply,'3, of the band and the outer ply, 7, of the fold-over top which is permitted by reason of my invention frees these plies from the restraining influence of the other plies along the longitudinal middle of the collar vvhen ironed out fiat before the collar is folded.
While the advantages due to my invention are most marked in a soft or semi-soft foldover collar, certain of saidadvantages render -starched fold-collars.
In F ig. 3, I have shown .an integral interlining ply, 11, extending throughout both the band and the folded-over top.
-When such an interlining ply is employed, I prefer to secure the upper edge of the interlining ply, 5, of the band by stitching, l2, to said integral interlining ply, 1l, only as shown, thus leaving both continuous or integral members which form respectively the inner ply of the band and the outer ply of the fold-over top, and the ou-ter ply of the band and the inner ply of the fold-over top, free from each other and from the interlining plies along and adjacent tothe fold-line of the collar.
What I claim as new and desire to secure j by Letters Patent is:
l. A fold collar havin" a fold-over top formed of a plurality of p ies of fabric, and a band formed of at least three plies of fabric including an intermediate ply limited to the band only, said intermediate ply having a fold marking and reinforcing strip along the fold line of the collar, the strip being folded upon itself within the band whereby to provide a rounded marker and reinforce, the inner ply of the band and the outer ply of the fold-over top being formed of an lntegral piece of fabric free 2from the other plies of the coll/ar valong and adjacent to the fold line of the collarand folded over said marking and reinforcing strip and supported by the latter along the fold, said band intermediate ply being substantially co-extensive with the reinforcing strip and the fold.
2. A fold collar having a fold-over top formed of a plurality of plies of fabric, and a band formed of at least three plies of fabric including an intermediate ly limited to the band only and carrying a old marking and reinforcing strip along the fold line, the inner ply of the band and the outer ply of the fold-over top being formed of an integral piece of fabric free from the other plies of the collar along and adjacent to the ,fold line of the collar, said fold marking and reinforcing strip being disposed entirely within the plane of the band and binding the edge of the intermediate ply, `whereby to protect the adjacent plies of the collar and provide a rounded fold reinforce, the said integral ieee of fabric being folded over said rein orcing strip and supported by the latter at the fold, and saidA intermediate band ply being substantially co-extensive with the fold.
3. A fold collar having a fold-over top formed of a plurality of plies offabric, and
a band formed of at least three plies of fabric substantiall eo-extensive throu hout the band inclu ing an intermediate p y limited to the band only and carrying at its edge along the fold line a fold marking and reinforcing strip, the inner ly of the band 'and the outer ply of the fol over top being formed of an integral piece of fabric free from the other plies of the collar along and adjacent to thefold line of the collar, the outer ply of thcfband and the inner ply of the fold-over top being formed of an integral piece of fabric free from the other plies of the collar along and adjacent to the fold line of the collar,'said fold marking and reinforcing strip binding said edge of the intermediate ply and being folded uponfitself within the plane of the band. i
