REIN GUIDE.
Original application led .Tune- 16, 1923,` Serial No. 645,751. Dividedand this application filed June 25,
The present invention relates to rein guiding lmeans for rein controlled devices such as tractors. Y
rlhis is a division of copending application Serial No. 645,751, filed June 1 6, 1923.
tion of the rein iny orderto exclude the entry of foreign matter, such as dust, mud, rain and other and similar .f-matter; to provide the guideswith cleaning means, such,
as wipers, which preferably surround theA reins as ythey enter the guides and maintain the reinsneat and clean;lto connect the guides to the housing-of the control mechanism of the tractor so lthat all parts are enclosed, the .wipers on the guidesl and about the reins completing the enclosing featurel thereof; and such further objects, advantages and capabilities, as will `later 4more fully appear and are inherently possessed bythe invention. y
In the drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a top plan viewof a tractor embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view vthrough one of the guides anda part of f the control mechanism for the tractor; Fig.
3 is a top plan view of guides constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 4 is a rear elevational view of the same, the reins being shownvin section; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view-through the guides and part of the housing fory the control mechanism,. showing theA swivel action of one of the guides, land Fig. 6 is ay transversev sectional view through the wiping part of a guide. w
Referring now` more particularly tothe drawings, the" invention is shown as embodied in al tractor comprising a power plant 1, preferably of'the internal combustion type, supported upon a pair of bull wheels 2 rotatably mounted. atthe outer Iends of a pair ofvaxle housingsrigidly Serial N0. 647,608.
as by bolts 4. At the rear end of the engine 1 is rigidly attached a housing 5 within which is located the power transmitting means and the control mechanism therefor, for the driving of the wheels 42.l At the rear end of the housing is attached a hitch mechanism 6 to which. are connected reaches 7 and 8 ofa drawn implement suitably supported upon an axle 9 and wheelsI 10 and 11 as clearly shown in Fig. v1 of the drawings. vA seat 12 for the driveror operator ymay be supported by any suitable means 13 fastened to the drawn implement, a pair of reins 14 and 15 extending from the `mechanism in the housing 5 to theseat 12where they may be manually operatedA by the j driver on the seat. These reins extend to and through rein guide mounted upon the upper wall of the housing side'. d,
Each rein guidecoinprises a casinghaving two sections 1,6.- and 17 with-` the latter rotatably vfitting within the former so as to form a sort of. angular telescopic connection or swivelled assembly whereby ,the section 17 is capable of movement about a `horizontal axis` withfrespect to the section 16,
as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The section 16k has ailower tubular member 18 rotatably fitting in a hub Iportion 19 of the casing 5. The.section,17 basa tubular vextension 20 in which is located a wiping material 21, preferably a fibrous material,
surrounding the. reins .14 or 15 entering the member 20. It will thus be seen that the members 16and 17 together with the. tubular members 18 and 20 forma hollow passage for the passingtherethrough of the rein intothe casing v5. The tubular member 18 is rotably mounted inthehub 19 sov that the guide,A asV a whole, may rotateor swivel aboutv av vertical axis of thetube- 18 in order toV accommodate they position of the guide member to thedirection of pull on therein. This is clearly'shown in- Fig. 5 ofthe drawingat'the right hand side thereof.k This action is automatic and freely eiectedirrespective; of direction of the pull on the rei'n, the tubular `member 20. always following lthe angular movement ofthejrein and causing the guide to turn about theI aXis of thetube 18.. Whena tractor rides over i the shaft 2,3.
' that the inner endlof the rein may run properly to the control mechanism, each guide is provided with a flanged pulley 22 rotatably mounted upon a transverse shaft 23 carried by the section 16, the outer ends of the shaft 23 being preferably,.tln'eaded to receive 'clamping nut 24.y 'The section 17 is preterably formed with bearings 25 rotatable upon The wiping means in the tubular member 2() is preferably formed of fibrous material surrounding the rein 11i and is held in place by means of projections 26 lformed in the inner part of the tube 21 the fibrous material being preferably confined between the projections 26 which are spaced vfromeach other as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This fibrous material surroundsY the rein rather closely so that as the latter is caused tov slide orf move longitudinally' thereof through the fibrous material, the latter will constantly act to maintain the rein neat and clean and also prevent the entry of dust, rain, mud and' other foreign matter into the yinterior of the. guide, and hence the casing 5.
The outery end of the tube 21 is preferably flared to' form a belledportion 27 for the ready entry of the rein. The projections 26 are located opposite sides of the reins and pairs with the projections of eachy pair opposite reach other and they extend. inwardly substantially closeV tofthe surfaces of the reins so that the space between the inner ends of the projections of each part forms a `slot'or guiding opening for the rein, then opening being substantially, but slightly greater than, thethickness of the rein.
Within the casing 5 is included the transmission mechanismfor controlling the driving of' the wheels' of' the tractor and control members, such as rein drums'28 carrying cams 29 and 30 opera-bly connected with suitable means for controlling the transmission mechanism. The inner end of each rein is vsuitably connected to a rein drum in any manner desired. The reins drums arerotated in one direction by a pull upon the reins, and suitable springs are provided for rotating the drums in the opposite direction, at which time thereins are drawn forwardly y in a direction opposite to that when the oper'ator pulls on the reins.
Should the tractor be driving at an angle i with the driven implement, such as around a curve` or toward a cramped position, the
direction of pull on the rein would be at an angle to the longitudinal line of travel of the tractor, and the guide members will swing about the vertical axis of the tube 1S in accommodation vwith the direction of pull of the rein.` This yoccurs 'freely and automatically without any other action upon the part of the operator.
Vhile we have herein described and shown upon the drawing la preterred embodiment oit the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to 4 the particular construction, details and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that other constructions, details, and arrangements of parts are comprehended by the invention without'v departing from the spirit thereof.
`Having now described our invention, we claim: v
