H. W. TAYLOR' DRINKING FOUNTAIN Filed June .7, 1924 8 mum W01 Guiana Patented May 29, 1928..
1 unit 1,t?1,38t Y HAIiSEY W. TAYLOR, OF WARREN, OHIO.
. DRINKING ronnrnrn.
Application filed June 7,
My invention relates to an improvement .in a drinking fountain, and my general ob-,
and. adequately safe guard the drinking stream from contamination and meddlesome interference in operations. More specifically, my object is to provide a drinking head comprising a separable discharge nozzle and protecting hood adapted to be mounted and used together as a complete working unit upon and in connection with a supply pipe.
As constructed this unit may be installed 15 within an overflow bowl or basin, or it may be mounted upon a stand-pipe independently of and entirely separate from an overflow receptacle without in any way affecting its functions and usefulness.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a sectional view vertically through the center of my improved drinking fountain head. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hood removed from the supporting nozzle, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the nozzle alone. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a modified form of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
The invention comprises a tubular nozzle member 2 having a flanged enlargement 3 at its middle formed with screw-threads 4 adapted to permit a rotatable detachable connection to be made with the internally screw-threaded lower reduced end 5 of a hollow cylindrical hood member 6. The lower portion or stem 7 of nozzle member 2is screw-threaded to permit it to be readily connected with a supply pipe or any water-distributing fitting or devlce, as commonly prac- 40 ticed. The upper part 8 of this nozzle member is crowned with an arched shield 9 and formed with a transverse opening 10 within which a jet member or nipple 11 projects upwardly at an inclination opposite a discharge opening 12. The mouth end of nipple 11 is provided with an annulargroove 1 1 to prevent contamination of the watersupply by adhesive action outside of the nipple. The arched shield 9 with its relatively small discharge opening 12 prevents the nipple from being touched or shut off by the hand or fingers of meddlesome persons, and access to the nozzle andnipple is further safeguarded by hood member 6 which completely encloses said parts when said hook member and nozzle are screwed together. A locking of the arched shield on the nozzle.
opposite sides of the nipple.
1924. Serial No. 718,531.
screw 15 may be used to prevent the rotation and easy removalqof the hood from the nozzle.
Hood member 6 is in the form of a tubular column which is closed at its top, but pro vided with a' large side outlet 17 at its front near the top through which the "inclined stream is adapted to be jetted to a point I where convenient drinking may take place. Following common practice, I prefer to place a guard 18 in front ofoutlet17, andthis guard maybe in the form ofa separate oval or circular. ring spaced apart in the main from hood 6 and fastened thereto by screws 19 or other means. Outlet 17 is elongated verticallyto permit an uninterrupted discharge of the inclined drinking stream, but a slanting wall 20 upon the inside of hollow hood 6 closes the major length of this outlet to prevent the entrance of any large implement or the fingers of a hand. The diameter of hood 6 and the overhanging position of closure wall 20 is such that the bottom edge 21 of the wall will not permit back drip of water upon jet or nipple 11 or its shield. Instead, if outflow of the drinking stream is checked and a back flow into the hood should occur the water will drop to thebottom of the hood where it may escape freely through a narrow horizontal slot 22 located directly opposite but beneath the front part and the slot is placed in front of the nozzle and shield 9 so that itisdificult to reach the nipple through thelateral or transverse i i opening-10. If closure of the topopening 12 is eflected in any way, the transverse openings 10 permit the water to escape at p The various safe-guards surrounding the nipple do not prevent the formation or discharge of an inclined drinking stream, but the housing of the nippleis so compactly obtained and the nipple so completely hidden that to the un initiate-d it appears that the jet is formed by opening 12 in shield 9, and the rounded formation of the shield tends to mislead meddlesome persons as to the actual func tion of opening 12. Q
The slot v In Fig. 4, I show a nozzle member 2 having a flattened enlargement 3 adapted to seat a hood member, 6' having a flat base with an outwardly-projecting lip 25 and a depending flange 26. A screw 15 secures-- flange 26 to enlargement 3, vand .a rightangled border flange 27 at the rear overlaps lip 25, thereby detaehably securing hood 6 and nozzle 2 together, thehood member surmounting said nozzle member and the latter being the sole support for the hood, as in the other form of the device hereinbefore described.
WVhat I claim, is:
1. Ahood for drinking fountain nozzles, comprising a tubularcolumn closed at its top and having at its base a, nozzle receiving opening, and provided in. its front all With a vertically elongated discharge opening adjacent the top thereof, in combination With a downwardly and inwardly inclined Wall projecting from the inner faceof said front Wall marginally of-the top and sides of said discharge opening and closing the major portion of the inlet side of said discharge opening and preventing unauthorized access to the nozzle, the outlet side of said large discharge opening being unobstructed. 2. A hood for drinking fountain nozzles,
comprising a tubular column closed at it's jacent the top thereof, in combination With a a downwardly and inwardly inclined Wall projecting from the inner face of said front Wall, marginally of the top and sides of said discharge opening and closing the major portion of the inlet side of said discharge opening and preventing unauthorized access to the nozzle, the outlet side of said discharge opening being unobstructed, the inclination of said inelined wall portion being such as to cause the Water drippings to drip "back into the hood clear of said nozzle.
In testimony whereof I affix mysig-nature.
HALSEY WV. TAYLOR.
