GEORGE T. APOSTOLOS, 0F BBGOKLYN, NEW YORKQ i WINDOW LATCH.
Application filed September 25, 1922, ScrialNo/ESOAES Renewed August 26, 1927.
This invention relates to latching devices and more particularly to novel and improved Window latch whereby the window sash may be opened from the top or bottom or both, and held in its latched position permitting of propercirculation of. air into a room. I p
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a novel and improved latching device capable of being installed on practi cally any type of window sash frame and so positioned that the same cannot be actuated or unlatched from the outside without breaking the glass or window pane.
Another and equally important object of the invention is the construction of a window latching device which may either be concealed from view or formed as a part of the window sash proper, the device being extremely simple in construction, practical, durable, highly efficient in operation and use, and otherwise capable of being manufactured at an extremely low cost whereby its commercial possibilities are greatly enhanced.
With these and other objects in'view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the subject matter being claimed, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention;
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View showing the invention when installed on the window sash permitting the same to be raised and lowered.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fi re 1.
Figure 3 is a detailed fragmentary view showing the locking strip.
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 44 of Figure 3.
' Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates the window frame and 6, 7, a top and bottom sash respectively which are to be latched by my novel and improved device now to be described in detail.
Inwardly of the glass panel 8 there is provided a vertical, preferably metallic apertured strip 9, and the upper and lower ends 10, 11, thereof being fastened by screws or other fastening elements 12 to the window sash proper as clearly shown by Figure 2 of I the drawing. j certain instances it 'inay. be desirable to construct the strip .9 of the same materialjasthe-sash 6 and position the same intermediate thesides of the sash and thus act as an abutment for the window panes 13, 14, as suggested byFigure 4 of the draw ing. The front wall of the strip 'is, provided with a series of scallops or serrated edges 14having somewhat the appearancev of a series of'connected circular apertures 15 to receive thefastening element now to be described; t
On the top edge'of the lower sash 7, I have provided a substantially U-shaped member 16, the same being secured -by a screw or other fastening element 17 and suggested by Figure 2 pf thedrawing. The upwardly extending legs 18 of the U-shaped element are apertured to receive a plungerrod 19 havinga tapered, preferably resilient head or cap 20 adapted to engage the apertured strip 9 to maintainthe vupper andlower sashes 6, 7, in their latched position. Thei'plunger rod 19 is provided with a hand actuating end 21 and disposed on the said rod between the upwardly extending legs 18, I have provided a coil spring 22 engaging the inner leg 18 and a stop 23 so that when the rod 19 is forced inwardly against the resistance of the spring 22, the head or cap 20 may be released fromlthe strip 9 consequently permitting the upper or lower sash to be raised to the desired position and when the same has bee'n'effected, the release of the plunger rod will automatically secure the respective sashes together. It will be observed that the strip 9 is moved outwardly from'the front wall thereof as at 23 to properly receive the tapered head 20 of the plunger rod and I is formed with an inwardly extending flange 24 which constitutes an abutment for the inner sides of the window panes 13,14, whereby the same may be fastened by putty or any other fastening means as clearly shown by Figure 4 of the drawing. The rear squared end 26 of the strip is of course formed integral with the sides thereof per- Initting said strip to be bent from a single piece of material. i
lVhile I have illustrated and described my invention withsome degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore appended claims.
reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the Having thus described invention, what I claim as new and desire to. secure by United States Letters Patent is 1'. The combination with the 'upper and lower sliding sashes of a window, of a latch comprising a strip member disposed vvertically ofone of said sashes and provided with a longitudinal slot, the opposite edges of which are serrated to form slot pockets, alatching rod passing through said slot and having anenlarged end portion adapted to seat in one of said pockets, an expandable member associated with said rod for normally'urging it away from said strip, and
means for carrying said rod on the other sash whereby longitudinal adjustment of the lower sliding sashes of a window of a' slotted strip member vertically disposed on said upper sash, the opposing edges of the slot being serrated so that slot pockets are .formed in the strip member, a bracket carried by the lower sash, a: rod extending through said bracket and through the strip and carrying at its extremities enlarged portions one of which is adapted to seat in one of the pockets in said strip member and latch the sashes together, means 'on said rod for normally urging the slot engaging enlarged portion thereof towards said strip, and the other of said enlarged portions acting as a stop when the rod is actuated to move the other enlarged portion away from the strip member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
