forming machine which will unite two pieces of material and will thereafter-act on the strip in such a manner as to obtain a positive adhesion between the materials entering into the strip.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

The present invention is particularly designed for making strips from which belt loops may be formed, but it is apparent that the invention is capable of being used for forming composite strips used in other arts. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, 1 indicates a roll from which a fabric 2 is drawn, this fabric serving as a core or body of the completed strip as illustrated in Fig. 10 of the drawings. This strip 2 is first coated with a suitable adhesive. In this instance, the adhesive is a glue contained in a pot 3 surrounded by a hot water chamber 4 heated in any suitable inanner as by an electrical heater introduced into a hollow transverse rib 5 formed in thebottom of the hot Water pot or receptacle and opening laterally for the introduction of the heater. From'the roll 1 the tape or fabric Qpasses over a roller 6 supported to one side' of the glue pot 3. The tape then passes downwardly under a roller 7 which is suspended from a cross bar 8 secured from thumb nuts 9 each across the pot 3, the roller 7 being submerged in the glue of the glue pot. From the roller 7 the tape passes upwardly to a squilgee embodying rollers 10 and 11 the latter being supported on a swinging frame 12 which is acted on by a spring 13 tohold the roller 10 with yielding pressure to the roller 11. After the fabric passes from the 'squilgee, it passes over a guide roller 14 to the guide 15 of the forming machine. The width of this guide is greater than the width of the fabric 2, so that a strip 16 of leather or other suitable material of greater width than the fabric may pass through the guide simultaneously with the fabric. Both strips of material 2 and 16 then pass together to a folder which consists of two curved walls 17' projecting upwardly on opposite sides of the bottom 18 of the folder and gradually converging toward the end of the folder. Depending from the topof the folder is a fin 19 secured to one of the guides 17 and positioned in spaced relation to the bottom 18 while, at the same time, being centrally arranged with reference to. the former. These curved sides turn up those portions of the strip 16, the projection beyond the sides of the fabric 2 and fold such projecting port-ions over the uppermost surface of the strip 2 in the manner shown in Fig. 10, the fin 1.9 maintaining the central position of the adjacent edges of the strip 16 with reference to the strip 2 so that there is no tendency for the projecting edges to be improperly laid upon the strip 2.
When the-composite strip issues from the folder, shaped in the manner shown in the section, Fig. 10, it is then subjected to a combination pressure and beating mechanism. This combination beating and pressure mechanism embodies, in this instance, two rollers 20 and 21, one arranged above Mounted with its shaft 28 in alignment With the worm shaft is an electric motor 29. This shaft 28 has a coupling 30 one end through which a. shaft 31 is connected thereto. Mounted on the shaft 31 is a clutch member 32, this clutch member being secured by a key 33 to the shaft 31 so that the clutch member turns with the shaft but may move axially thereof, in order to cooperate with the clutch face 27 on the grooved wheel 26 to establish driving connection with the clutch face 27 on the grooved wheel 26 to establish 4 driving connection between the motor 29 and the worm wheel 25. It is apparent that the speed of rotation of the motor shaft 28 is through the worm 25 and the worm wheel 24 reduced s0 that the speed of rotation of the grooved wheel 20 is materially slower than that of the electric motor shaft.
, Movement of the clutch member 32 may be effected in any suitable manner. In this i11- stance, a yoke 34 pivoted at 35 to a fixed part has an adjustable portion 36 thereon engaged by a cam surface 37 on a sliding cam 38 which is guided in ways 39 on the frame of the machine and controlled by an arm 40 on a rod 41 to which a treadle or other suitable operating member may be connected. The depression of the rod 41 against the action of the spring 42 lowers the cam 38 and forces the yoke in a direction to draw the clutch member 32 in engagement with the clutch face 27 to effect the driving of the lower roller 20 which act-s on the underside of the form strip and through the latter rotates the upper roller 21.
It is. desirable that when the clutch connection between the motor or power element and the roller 20 is broken that the movement of the latter shall be immediately stopped and to this end a brake is employed which 00- operates with the walls of the groove in the member 26 to brake the action of the shaft carrying the worm 25. In this instance, this brake is in the form of a bell crank lever 43 pivoted at '44 to a fixed part and having a brake portion 45 for engaging in the groove of the wheel 26. The other arm of the bell crank lever 43 has pivoted thereto at 46 an arm 47 on the rod 41. The depression of the rod 41 swings the bell crank lever 43 to carry the brake lever 45 out of engagement with the brake 46 when the bell crank lever 42 is moved out of engagement with the clutch face 27. A spring pressedplunger48 also acts on the bell crank lever 43 in a direction to move the brake portion 45. The spring pressed plunger together with the spring 42 act together to produce the elevation of the rod 41, so that when the pressure on the rod is relieved the rod moves upwardly to break connection with the clutch member 23*and the clutch face 27 and also to shift the brake member 45 into engagement with the grooved wheel 26.
. The housing 23 is supported on a base 49 which also supports a frame 50 into which the housing 23 projects to position the wheel 20 below the Wheel 21. This frame 50 has an opening 51 opposite the Wheel 20 through which a screw 52 may be reached. This screw secures a washer 53 which holds the wheel20 to the shaft 22 and permits the ready removal of the Wheel 20 for the purpose of cleaning. The opposite sides of the frame 50 above the roller 20 are provided with guides 54in which bearing guide blocks 55 are arranged, this guide block being connected by a yoke 56 and supporting a shaft 57 which carries the roller 21, the periphery of this roller being formed so as to enter the groove 20 formed in the roller 20 in order to exert pressure upon thestrip passing between the two rollers. This pressure is equal to the weight of the roller 21, bearing blocks 55, the yoke 56' and the parts'carried thereby due to the fact that the roller is loosely supported by vertical movement on the guides 54 through said bearing blocks 55. A scraper pivoted at 71 and held toward the roller 21 serves to maintain the latter free from glue.
With the end in view of producing a beating or pounding action on the strip as it passes between the rollers, a beating mechanism is employed comprising, in this instance, two wheels 58 formed with bevelled teeth or projections 59 and secured to the wheel 21 to turn with the latter. For cooperating with these tooth wheels 58, two plungers 60. are provided, connected by a cross piece 61 to a plunger 62 which is guided in a frame 63 supported on the frame 50 preferably by being hinged at 64 to said frame at one side and held at its other side by a thumb screw 65, thus permitting the frame 63 to be swung upwardly to open up the upper ends of the guide slots 54 in order that the bearing blocks 55, connecting yoke 56, the wheel 21 and the toothed wheels 58 may be removed from the machine for the purpose of cleaning. A weight 66 is secured to the slide rod 62 and projects from opposite sides to cooperate with guides 67 formed on the movable-frame piece 63. Adjustable plungers 68 depend from the frame 63 above this Weight 66 into bores formed in said weight, these bores containing springs 69 which act between the bottoms of the bores and the ends of the plunger 68 and opposite the upward movement of the weight.
The operation of the invention will be understood from the foregoing, but it may be summarized as follows: A strip of material such as a fabric 2 is passed into a glue pot 3 and passes from the latter to the guide 15 which also receives a strip 16 preferably of leather to be wrapped around the fabric :2. The two strips then pass together from the guide 15 to the folder which turns the projecting edges of the strip 16 over the uppermost surface of the strip 2. The two pieces of material unite as a single strip then pass to the former between the two wheels 20 and 21. The uppermost wheel 21 is moved vertically and is weighted so that the material is subjected to the pressure of the weights imposed on such wheel. In addition to being weighted, this wheel is without moving it out of contact with the work, subject to successive impacts or pulsations which produce a beating action upon the strip as the latter passes between the two rollers 20 and 21. This beating action is obtained by the two toothed wheels58 being engaged by the two plungers 60 which are acted upon by the weight 66 and the springs 69. This weight and springs are imposed upon the roller 21. It is found that this beating is desirable in order to obtain a positive adhesion between the pieces of material entering into the formation of the completed strip. After being subjected to the beating action, the strip issues from the machine and when the adhesive is completely dried, the strip may be cut up into smallpieces to form loops from belts.
lVhat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A composite strip forming machine comprising means for applying an adhesive to one of the materials entering into the strip, a folding device through which the strip forming materials are passed to fold the opposite edges of one of the strip materials about the body forming portion of the strip, and a beating mechanism operating on the strip as it passes from the folding device said beating mechanism having a portion held with pressure in contact with the work.
2. A composite strip forming machine comprising means for applying an adhesive to one of the materials entering into the strip, a folding device through which the strip forming materials are passed-to fold the opposite edges of one of the strip materials about the body forming portion of the strip, and a beating mechanism operating on the strip as it passes from the folding device, said heating mechanism embodying a pair of rollers through which the strip passes, one of said rollers being held with pressure against the work and means for imparting a pulsating action to one of said rollers without moving said roller out of contact with the strip.
3. A composite strip forming machine comprising a beating mechanism embodying a'pair of rollers between which the strip is passed, and means for imparting a pulsating movement to the roller without moving said roller out of contact with the strip. 1
4. A machine for forming strips embodying a beating mechanism comprising two rollers between which the strip passes, one of said rollers being held toward and the other being movable away from the same, a toothed member turning with said last mentioned roller, and a plunger yieldingly held in engagement with said toothed member.
5. A strip forming machine embodying a pair of rollers through which the strip is passed, one of said rollers being movable toward and from the other, two toothed mem bers being arranged on opposite sides of the movable rollers and turning therewith, and yielding means cooperating with said toothed pressure to said roller to hold it toward the first mentioned roller.
6. A strip forming machine embodying a beating mechanism comprising two rollers, one of which is movable toward and from the other, and means for imparting a pulsating movement to said last mentioned roller, said means comprising a toothed member and a yielding pressure device 00- operating with the toothed member to hold the last mentioned roller toward the other roller.
7. A composite strip forming machine comprising means for adhesively uniting two strips, and a combined pressure and beating mechanism having a portion held with pressure in constant contact with the composite strip after its component parts are united and before the adhesive is dry.
8. A combined pressure and beating mechanism for uniting material comprising two rollers between which the material passes, one of said rollers beingheld with pressure in contact with the material and mechanism for imparting pulsations to said roller withoutmoving it out of contact with the material.
9. A combined pressure and beating mechanism for uniting material comprisin two rollers between which the materia members and constructed to apply passes, one of said rollers being held with pressure in constant contact with the material, and mechanism for imparting pulsations to said roller without moving it out of contact with the material, and means for turning the other of said rollers to effect a feeding of the material.
