This invention relates to a new and nseful device in the nature of a sand paperm or polishing machine for floors, automo 110 bodies, cabinets, walls, or other surfaces, where a highly smooth filllSh is required for proper appearance. The invention has for an object the provision of a novel machine which is easily and readily manipulated by hand.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of novel construction and arran ement of parts hereinafter more fully descri ed, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of my improved machine partly 1n section, so as to more clearly show the constructlon thereof.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a similar view to that illustrated in Fig. 3 showing the clamping members in a released or disengaged position.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view, illustrating a further development of my improved machine.

As here embodied my improved sand papering and polishing machine comprises a small electric motor 10, of the ordlnary type, secured to the casing 11, to which a pro ecting handle 12 is attached. Upon the shaft 13 of the electric motor a pinion 14 is fixed, this pinion meshing with a gear 15 loose on the stub shaft 16 which is fixed u on the casing 11. Fixed to the face of e gear 15 eccentrically thereto, is a pin 17 that enages in a longitudinal slot 18 in an oscillating lever 19 that is fulcrumed at substantially its center to the motor shaft 13.
The lever 19 has attached at its bottom a forked member 22 having formed therein apertures adapted to receive the pins 21, which engage in apertures formed in the foot member 22, which is rectangularly shaped, and has formed therein elongated recesses, adapted to be engaged by the projecting extremities 24 of the casing 11, and cover plate 20 attached to the casing.
Mounted in suitable bearing members of the casing 11, are the drums 25 and 26, over act to normally hold the clamping members The in engagement with the sand paper or felt,
against the foot member 22, so as to lock the sand paper or felt to the foot member. The inner or adjacent ends of the rods 31 and 32 are provided with transverse members 35, between which is positioned a cam 36, that is fixed on the lower end of a rod 37, that extends upwardly throu h a suitable longitudinal axial aperture in t e lever 19, and is partially rotatable in the said lever. The rod 37 has fixed thereto adjacent to its upper end, a laterally projecting pin 38, that is adapted to engage the cover plate 20, when the lever reaches each end of' its oscillatory movement, to rock the rod 37, so
as to momentarily free the clamping members 29 and 30, from the sand paper or felt to permit of the latter being advanced.
The pin 39 is rotatively mounted in the plate 20, and has attached thereto, at one extremity, outside the plate 20, a knob 40 or handle. The collars 41 and 42 are secured to the pin 39, and are positioned at each side, adjacent to the plate 20, so as to rotatively hold the pin 39 in a fixed relative position thereto. The pin 39 is provided with a threaded portion 43, adapted to engage in a threaded aperture formed in the brake collar 44, slidably mounted on the shaft 13.
The latter described construction is such as will permit the brake collar 44 to frictionally engage the said lever 19, when the knob 40 is rotated or turned so as to materially decrease the speed of oscillationof, the foot member 22.
The levers 45 and 46 are pivotally attached, as at 47, by a pin, or the like, to the lever 19. The tension springs 48 are attached to the levers 45 and 46, and to the lever 19 so as to normally hold the free extremities 49 and 50, respectively, in engagement with the ratchet wheels 51 and 52, respectively, secured to the said drums 25 and 26. The pin 53 is threadedly attached to the lever 19 and is extended therefrom, through an elongated aperture 54, formed in the casing 11. The knob'55 is attached to the extended extremity of the The pin 53 is provided with projecting elements 56 and 57, adapted to engage the levers 45 and 46, respectively, as may be desired, by rotating or turning the knob 55. The latter described construction is such as will permit either one of the levers 45 and 46, to be disengaged with the ratchet wheels, so as to permit the oscillatory movement of thelever 19, to partially rotate either one of the drums 25 or 26, so as to advance the sand paper or felt in the desired direction, and so to reverse the direction of advancement of the said sand paper or felt. I
The method of operation and manipulation of my improved machine is obvious from the foregoing description, it being apparent that the rotation of the electric motor will cause the foot member 22 to oscillate and the sand paper or felt to be gradually fed forward. The operator of my improved machine holds the sand paper or felt in engagement with the surface to be treated.
In Fi 5 of the accompanying drawing, I have s own the extended members 58 provided with dove-tailed elements 59, adapted to slidably engage in similarly shaped openmgs formed in the extremities of the above mentioned foot member 22. The extended member 58 has a tapered enlar ed lower portion 60 so as to permit the san paper 61 or felt, which is extended over the extended member 59 to be used in corners or crevices. It should be understood that the clamping members 29 and 30 are suitably formed or shaped, so as to accommodate the extended members 58.
The cylindrical members 62 and 63 are slidably mounted in suitable openings formed in the extremities of the extended elements 64 and 65 of the casing 11. The threaded members 66 and 67 are threadedly secured to the'wall 68 of'the extended elements 64 and 65. The expansion springs 69 are secured to the threaded members 66 and 67, and to the concave members 70 attached to the cylindrical members 62 and 63, so as to normally hold the contact points 71 and 72 in a disengaged POSllZlOII. The contact points 71 are attached to the arm 73, extended from the stud 74 secured to the cylindrical members 62 and 63. The contact points 72 are attached to the extendpin 53.

A suitable electric wire 77 connects the said extended members 75, similar electric Wires 78 being connected to the first mentioned extended members 73 and to the electric motor 10. The above described construction is such as will permit the electric motor 10, to ,operate my improved device, when the said device is properly or uniformly engaged with the work to be sand papered or polished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A sandpaper and rubbin machine comprising a casing, a pair of rums with ratchet wheels mounted therein, a lever oscillatably mounted within the casing and between the drums, means for oscillating said lever, a strip of sandpaper engaged on and between the drums and guided beneath a foot attached to the bottom of the lever,
-means for locking the strip of sandpaper in position on the foot and periodically releasing the sandpaper allowing advancing, a pair of levers pivotally attached at one of their ends to the first mentioned lever, tension springs attached to the first mentioned lever andyto the pair of levers urging the free ends of the pair of levers into engagement with the said ratchet wheels, a pin attached to the first mentioned lev r and exan elongated aperture, a knob attached-to the free extremity of the pin andelements projecting from the pin engageable with one or the other of the said pair of levers as may be desired by rotating the knob so that one of said pair, of levers is disengaged from its normally en aged ratchet wheel so as to permit the oscil atory movement of the first mentioned lever to partially rotate one of the drums during each oscillation.
