UNITED STATES MAYBELL ANDREWS, OI DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
LADYS SHOULDER-STRAP FASTENBEB.
Application filed March 1, 1924. Serial No. 696,374.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a shoulder strap fastener adapt-ed for use with the outer garments of ladies Wear and intended for preventing 5 the shoulder straps of inner garments worn by Women from slipping downwardly off of the shoulders onto the arms and becoming generally displaced on the shoulder.
An object of the invention is the provision of an attachment which may be secured to the outer garment for serving as a guide for preventing the slipping of the shoulder straps out of normal position, while, at the same time, permitting longitudinal movement of the-shoulder straps relatively to the shoulder over which worn and relatively to the outer garment covering the shoulder straps. 1
Another object of the invention is the provision of a shoulder strap guide comprising a pair of doubled-over portions of fabric adapted for attaching together at their ends and so arranged as to be attached to the outer garment and receive between the doubled-over portions, the shoulder straps in slidable relation thereto.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a shoulder strap fastener of the class described, which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture, hi ly\ eflicient in use and easily and quicfily placed in position on the outer garment.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.- The invention, consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood from a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the inven-' tion illustrating its application to a garment.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention showing a strap partially embraced thereby; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the invention showing its use with a shoulder strap. 7
The invention, as shown in the drawings, in its preferred form, comprises a strip of fabric, doubled upon itself, to provide the two main body portions 7 and 10. Secured to this fabric at the line of doubling is a safety pin'14. It will be noted that the main body portion 7 is of greater length than the main body portion 10. This main body portion is in turn doubled upon itself gether.
to provide the doubled over portion 11. Secured to the main body portion 7 at the line of doubling over, is a safety pin 13. Mounted on the free end of the doubledover portion 11 is a portion 16 of a snap fastener, which is adapted to co-operate with a portion 15 of a snap fastener mounted on the free end of the main body portion 10. These snap fastener portions are designed to co-operate for securing the free ends of these portions to The main body portion 7 is doubled upon itself to provide'the doubled over portion 11 at substantially the medial line of that ortion which projects beyond the end of t e main body portion 10, so that, when the sna fastener is fastened, the portion 11 and t e portion 10 will be of substantially the same length as the main body portion 7. The safety pins are used for attaching the'device quickly to a garment 17 with which Worn. The garment usually being worn over, so as to cover the shoulder strap 18. The pin 14 may be secured to the neck seam of the outer garment and the pin 13 secured to the outer garment adjacent the sleeve seam where sleeves are worn. With garments on which the sleeves are omitted, the pin 13 'may be attached to the outer seam. It is evident that when the device is thus attached on the arment 17, the snap fastener portions may he separated so as to permit the passage of the shoulder straps 18 between the fabric portions 7 and 10, as shown in Fig. 1. The snap fasteners may then be clasped together so as to assure the retaining of the shoulder strap on the shoulder in proper position. It is evident-that lateral movement of the shoulder strap is limited whereas longitudinal movement is not limited. In this way there is a free movement of the parts relatively to each other so that no inconvenience results to the weareron this account. The limiting of the lateral movement of the shoulder straps assures the retention of the shoulder straps on the shoulders in the proper position and thus eliminates the disagreeable features of shoulder straps as now worn, where no guide is used to retain the shoulder strap in the proper position on the shoulder.
It is apparent from the structure. of the device that it is simple to make, cheap, andthat it will fulfill the functions for which it is intended.
If it is desired -to 'u se the device with transparent outer garments, such as georgette or chiffon, the device may be made from fabric which is of the same'inaterial and particularly of the same color, so that, even though it be visible from the outside, it will not near the appearance ofthe garment or appear unseemly in connection with the garment.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of structure, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise form of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire -to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A shoulder strap fastener of 'the class described, comprising a fabric portion, doubled upon itself, to provide two main body portions of unequal length, the lon' er of said main body portions beingdouble upon itself, adjacent its free end, at a line substantially medial of the portionin excess of the length of the shorter main body portion; means for detachably connecting the free ends of said shorter main body portion and said doubled over portions of said longer main body portion; and means'on said fab.-
connecting the same to a garment, said main body portions permitting the positioning of a shoulder strap therebetween, free for lon-v gitudinal movement therein. H
2. A shoulder strap fastener of the class described, comprising a fabric portion, doubled upon itself, to provide two main body portions of unequal length, the longer of said main body portions being doubled upon itself, adjacent its free end; means for detachably connecting the free ends of said shorter main body portion and said doubledover portion of said longer main body portion, said doubled-oven portion and said shorter main body portion together forming a-continuous strip equal'in length to the longer main body portion less the doubledover portion thereof; and means mounted on said fabric at both lines of doubling for detachably connecting the same to a garment, said main body portion permitting the positioning of a shoulder strap therebetween, free for longitudinal movement therein and limited as to lateral movement therein.
In testimony whereof, I have signed the foregoing specification.
