Application led February This invention relates in general to sheet metal working presses, but more particularly to improved ineans whereby a sheet metal drawing press may lie readily con- 5 verted into a press for performing an entirely different metal working operation such as punching or the like, and vice versa. In sheet metal drawing presses the material to be operated upon is shaped between l two co-operating dies one of which is reciprooable toward and away from the other. A blank or work holding member is provided which co-operates with the reciprocating die for clamping or holding the work l therebetween during the shaping or drawing of the metal by the cosoperating dies.
The blank or work holding means is resisted in its movement in one direction by cushioning means .which causes the blank or work to be gripped with the desired or necessary pressure.
Ordinarily machines of this character when equipped with cushioning means cannot be used for any other purpose than drawing themetal and when the owner of such a press is desirousV of performing punching operations, such work must be done on an entirely different press, thereby necessitating the provision of two presses.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide improvedmeans whereby a sheet metal 'drawing press of this character embodying such cushioningmeans may be readily converted into a press for perform- 35 ingother and entirely different sheet metal operations, such as punching or` the like, and vice versa, without necessitating the entire dismantling of the cushioning means or the services of an expert mechanic to thus convert the press. A further object is to of this character improve ving the cushioning means of the cushioning means may be readily raised and lowered into and out of active position and at the same time always remain connectedwith orV suspended from the press. A further object is to provide connections between the parts of the cushioning means whereby said parts may (provide in a press means for mountbe readily connected and disconnected when desired.

the construction, combination 'and arrangement of the several parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention, and in which Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section of a portion of a sheet metal drawing press constructed iii accordance with the principles of this invention, and with the parts in one position. showing the position of the parts-when the press is converted from a drawing to a punching press.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 designates. generally the base of a sheet metal press having an upright 11 upon which a member 12 is adapted to be reciprocated in the ordinary and usual manner.
Carried by the reciprocating member 12 is 'a die 13 which co-operates with a die 14, the latter being supported by a bed plate 15 removably mounted upon the press.
All of the above referred to parts are of the ordinary and well known construction.
Secured to and depending from the press are hanger members 16, any number of which may be provided and these hanger members are preferably inthe form of rods having detachable and threaded engagement 17 with the press. l
The rods maybe of any desired length and in the lower extremity of each of which there is provided a socket or recess 18 opening ,through the end of the rod.
Arranged below the press is a cushioning device which preferably embodies a cylinder 19 in which a piston 20 reciprocates. C0nnected with the piston 2O is a piston rod 21 which extends through the closed end of the cylinder and the rod is preferably reduced at its free end as at 22, the reduced portion being adapted to enter the socket or recess 18. A fastening device 23 preferably in the form of a tapered pin passes through registering apertures in the telescoping portions of the rod 21 and hanger member 16 for detachably securingthe two together.
