Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIQE CHARLES M. THEBERATH, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMEN T IN HARNESS-MOUNTINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,040, dated August 24, 1875 application filed May 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. TEEEE- RATH, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Harness Mountings; and do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing hereinafter referred to, forms a full specification of the same.
The object and purpose of my invention are to form and make an improvement in the present mode of constructing covered and lined harness-mountings, which shall render the mountings more durable and less objectionable than those at present in use. In covered terrets and other covered harnessmountings now in use the edges of the covering are much exposed and are liable to be worn and defaced. The reins are also liable to be cut and rapidly worn out by rubbing against the sharp edges of the metallic part-s forming the inside of the terrets or other mountings. I
By my improved mode of making harnessmountings all these defects are remedied.
In the drawing, Figure I and Fig. 1* is a metal casting for terrets with raised or turnedup edges, with grooves on each side. Fig. II is a metal casting for a bolt-hook, with the inner surface lined with metallic lining raised or turned up at the edges, with grooves on each side. Fig. III is a coveredterret, with the inner surface of the ordinary casting lined with a metallic lining, and the edges raised up so as to form a metallic edge or projection, with a groove on each side of the mounting. Fig. IV is a covered terret, with a bead or strip of metal soldered to the lining, forming a higher projecting ridge and deeper groove for receiving and protecting the covering than is shown in Figs. I, II, and III. Fig. V is a sectional View of Figs. III and IV.
First, I cast the metal part A, of hame-terrets inside hame-rings, terrets, fly-hooks, posthooks, pad-hooks, bolt-hooks, fly-terrets, buckles, gag-swivels, gag-hooks, and rings, with turned-up or raised-up edges B, and grooves 0. (See Fig. I.) Second, I line the inner surface of the ordinary metal casting D of the said harness-mountings with ametallic lining, E, turned up or raised up at the edges so as to form a groove, F, on each side of the mounting for the reception of the covering. (See Fig. II.) Third, I linethe inner surface of the ordinary casting of the said harnessmountings with a metallic lining, the edges of which are to be turned up or raised up so as to form a metallic edge or projection, I, on each side of the mountings, and thus prepare them for the reception and protection of the covering J. (See Fig. III.) Fourth, I form a projecting metallic edge or ridge on each side of the mountings by soldering or otherwise attaching a head or strip of metal to the lining or casting L, thus making a higher projection, M, and deeper groove, N, on each side of the mountings than is shown in Figs. I, II, and III for the reception and protection of the covering 0. (See Figs. IV and V.) The raised or turned-up edges form a metallic ridge or projection and groove on the sides of the mounting, and thus protect the edges of the covering from exposure and injury, while they do away with the sharp' edges of the lining of the covered harness-mountings now in use, and cause the inner face of the mount-lugs to present a smooth, rounded surface.
By this simple device of raised-up or turnedup and projecting metallic edges or ridges, made in either of the ways described above, and shown in the drawing, the covering of harness-mountings is protected from the wear and injury to which it is exposed when the covered mountings are made in the usual manner, and the whole mounting is made ,to present a neat and handsome appearance from the contrast between the turned-up metal edges and the covered surface of the mounting.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Harness-mountings of the character set forth, formed with turned-up or raised and projecting metal edges, and having laid in the recesses or shoulders so providedthe covering or plating, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of April, 1875.
CHAS. M. THEBERATH. Witnesses: LoUIs W. FROST, CHARLES G. 00E.
