UNITED STATES EDW-ABD E. FRANCE, or nomroxapconomno.
MECHANICAL TOY.
Application filed October 28, 1927. Serial no. 229,898.
g, This invention relates to improvements in mechanicaltoys and an object of the invention isto provide a'=mechanical toy that will be attractive and interesting to children, inexpensive ft0- manufacture, .and .durable.
Othercbjects relatingtofdetails of com stnuction, combination,:, and arrangement of parts will hereinafter appear in the detail description, tofollow:
This invention 'isi'llustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in whichz-- p p p Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the toy,
Figure :2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 22 of Fig; 3, and
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings more particularly the toy may comprise a suitable housing or casing having any desired outer appearance. The casing may comprise two side walls 11, a bottom 12 and rear wall 13.
Adjacent the forward end of the casing there l is pivoted a rectangular frame 14. The frame is supported for swinging movement by suitable rivets 15. Within the frame is rotatably mounted a drum 16. The drum may be made of metal, wood or any suitable material. Suitable pins 17 journal the drum 16 in the vertical portions of frame 14. The pins extend through arcuate shaped slots 18 in the side walls 11. The slots 18 allow easy movement of the pins 17 and permit a limited swinging movement of the frame 14 and drum 16. The frame due to gravity, normally assumes a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 2.
The drum 16 has its outer peripheral surface formed with a series of steps or offsets 19. These steps or offsets continue entirely about the drum and may be of the shape illustrated in Fig. 3.
Within the rear end portion of the casing or housing 10 I provide second frame 20 comprising two sides 21 and bottom 22. The frame 20 is suitably secured'by the cross members 23 extending therebetween the sides thereof and the cross members 24 extending between the upper edges of the casing side walls 11.
Between the sides 21 of frame 20 there is journaled the ends of a crank shaft 25. The ends of the crank shaft may extend through the walls of the casing 10 as shown, if desired. Upon the crank shaft there is rotatably mounted an elongated block 'mem ber 26 and upon the block 26 the rod 30 is tomaintain the figure 27 in an upright position. WVithin the lower end of the frame 20I'mount a suitable spring motor 31 comprising the usual spring 32, shaft 33, ratchet 34 and pawl 35. A suitable knob 36 may be provided" for winding spring 32, and said spring-in-"Iparts rotation to the shaft 25 through the train of gears 37.38; 39 and 40.
In operation, the motor i'lfipiaItS 1Ot2\- 'tion tofishaft 25, duet-o the fact that theb1oc'kf26 is 'looseupon said sha ia-the operation will be to lift and" lower the block 26 with each rotation of the shaft. The movement of the block 26 will be such as to bring the toe of foot 28 upon a step 19 when the figure starts its downward movement. With the downward movement of the figure, the same also moves forward, and
thus pushes the foot forwardly and at the same time imparts rotary movement thereto. During upward movement of the figure, the same will move rearwardly. Each rotation of the shaft 25 swings an arm for wardly and gives one rotary impulse thereto.
It is clear with the operation recited that the drum 16 can be rotated at considerable speed with each winding of spring 32. The drum being propelled by the figure 27 while swinging backward and forward will interest and attract children, and the upward and downward motion of the figure will add to the interest and attraction.
While I have shown and described a specific construction of a mechanical toy constituting this invention, I wish it to be understood the application of my invention is not so limited as indicated by the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a mechanical toy, a rotatable drum, a figure arranged on one side of the drum, means for imparting upward and downward movement to the figure, said figure comprising a rigid member in contact with said drum whereby the drum will be retated with the motion of the figure.
2. In a mechanical toy, adrum mounted for rotary and swinging movement. a figure arranged at the rear of the drum, means for imparting downward and forward movement to the figure, and cooperative means between the drum and figure whereby the drum will be rotated and swung forwardly with the movements of the figure.
3. In a mechanical toy, a crank shaft, :1 block loose upon the crank shaft, a figure upon the block, a rotatable drum forward of the figure, cooperative means between the figure and drum whereby with rotation of the crank shaft the drum will be rotated.
4. In a mechanical toy, a crank shaft, a block loose upon the shaft, a figure upon the block having a member extending forwardly, a drum forward of the figure and adapted to be engaged by the forwardly extending member of the figure and rotated with the movement of the figure caused by rotation of the crank shaft.
5. In a mechanical toy, a crank shaft, a block loose upon the shaft, a figure upon the block having a member extending forwardly, a drum mounted for swinging and rotating movement forward of the figure and adapted to be engaged by the forwardly extending member of the figure with each rotation of the crank shaft and receiving a forward and rotation impulse.
6. In a mechanical toy, a crank shaft, a block loose upon the shaft, means for bolding the block against rotation, a figure upon the block having a member extending forwardly, a drum mounted for swinging and rotating movement forward of the figure and adapted to be engaged by the forwardly extending member of the figure with each rotation of the crank shaft and receiving a forward and rotation impulse.
7. In a mechanical toy, a crank shaft, a block loose upon the shaft, a figure upon the block having a member extended forwardly, a drum forward of the figure, said drum having a series of steps in its periphery and ada ted to be engaged b the forwardly exten ing member of the gure and rotated by the movement of the figure caused by rotation of the crank shaft.
