EDWARD S. PEROT AND HARRY O. BEITENMAN, OF -PHILADELPHIA, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHUCKS.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,018, dated August 24, 1875; application filed June 26, 1875. l
To all 'whom 'it may concer'n Be it known that we, EDWD. S.. PERoT and HARRY O. BEI'rENMAN, of the city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Chuck, of which the following is a specification:
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claixn.
Figure 1 is a face view of the chuck. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the front plate vand the jaws and screws. Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 1 on the line w x. Fig. 4 is a section of one of the screws and a jaw, and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the back plate and the wheel for turning thejaws. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the jaws; B, the screws; O, the pinions D, the wheel which turns the pin ions; and E is a ring under the wheel, having inclines F, to ride up and down studs G in the bottom of the groove for the wheel, and a shank, H, extendi'ng out through the shell of the chuck, for turning it, the slot for the shank being inclined to correspond With the inclines F, so that by shifting the stud to one end of the slot the ring will push the wheel into gear with the pinions; and shifting it the other way, it will allow the Wheel to move back out of gear, thereby, in the first case, causing the jaws to work in the nianner of a universal chuck, and in the latter case to work inde pendently of each other.
I is a stop-lug, to lock the ring E when raised up the inclines, to hold the wheel in gear by filling theslot out of which the shank H projects. It is held in the slot by a part which has a hole through which the shank projects and receives a nut, J.
Having `thus described our invention, We claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of stop-111g I With the shank 'H of the shifting-ring E and the slotted shell of the chuck, substantially as specified.
EDWARD S. PEROT. HARRY C. BEITENMAN.
