Application vfiled June 26,-1926, Serial The invention consists in the details of construction and in lthe combination and arrangement fof the several parts of my improved fastener whereby certain ,important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that myv invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe ihe same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary viewin elevation illustrating a fastener constructed in accordance with -an embodiment of myinvention and in applied position and partly in interlocking assembly;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, A denotes a shoe upper or the like provided with a conventional central opening 1. My improved fastener coacting with the marginal portions of said upper A or the like defines such opening 1. Y
My improved fastened comprises'a plurality of members'M suitably secured to the marginal portions of the upper A defining the opening 1 and extending alternately in opposite directions inwardly of such opening 1. Each ofthe members M-ce'mprises a No. 118,820. Renewed Hatch 31, 1928.
shank 2 suitably aixed to the upper A and a portion 4 extending be ond a margin of the upper to interlock with oppositely fixed members M. The lower face of the portion 4 is inclined downwardly and terminates in a rounded portion or lower extremity 3.. The end face 5 of the portion 4 is inclined upwardly and inwardly from the lower extremity 3.
The upper face of the portion 4 is provided with an'open recess 7 of a curvature in cross section substantially similar to the cross sectional curvature of the rounded portion or lower' extremity 3 and which is adapted, when the opposite members are in interlocking connection, to receive the rounded portion or lower extremit 3 of the portion 4 of the adjacent member as is believed to -be clearly illustrated in Figure 1.
Coacting with the assembled members M is a slide S of any desired construction but preferably of the type illustrated in my application for patent executed on even date herewith. When the slide S is 'moved in one direction, the members M are caused to disengage or separate, but when the slide is moved in the opposite direction, the adjacent members M are caused to eifectually interlock and thereby substantially close or tie the marginal portions of the upper A defining the opening 1.
The marginal portions of the upperA defining the opening 1, as herein disclosed, are provided with the suitably positioned stop members 8 whereby the locking movement of the slide S is limited.
As vis particularly illustrated in Figure 1, it is to be noted that the marginalv portions of the upper A defining the opening 1 are also provided therealong with the reinforcing strips 9.and in order to compensate for such strips to assure the proper placement of the members M, it is to be noted in Figure 4 that the shank 2 of each member is bifurcated, as at 10, to straddle a reinforced mar ginal portion with the outer extremities of the resultant arms of the shank 2 inwardly disposed, as'at 11, whereby theV shank is effectively clinched behind the reinforcement.
From the 'fore oing description it is thought to be obv1ous that a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1. An opening and closing device comprisin a plurality of interlocking members carrie by the parts to be opened and closed, each of said members including a shank secured-to one of the pai-ts, and a portion extending be ond the maiginof such part, said exten ed portion having a lower face inclined downwardly and terminating in a rounded lower extremit the end face of said extended portion eing inclined upwardly and inwardlyl from the lower extremity, the top face of the extended portion being provided with an open recess of a curvature in cross section similar to the cross sectional' curvature of the rounded extremity,
the lower extremity of the extended portionA of one member seating inthe open recess of an opposite member when said members are in interlocking engagement, and a slide movable along the parts to be opened and closed, said slide engaging the interlocking mein- 'move said members into interlocking engage bers to separate and unlock the same, or to ment.
2. An opening and closing device comprising a plurality of interlocking members carried by the parts to be opened and closed, each of said members including a shank secured to one of the parts, and a ortion extending beyond the margin of suc part, said extended portion having a lower face inclined downwardly and terminatin in a rounded lower extremit the end ace of said extended portion eing inclined upwardly and inwardly from the lower extremity, tlie to face of the extended portion being provi ed with an open recess of a curvature in cross section similar to the cross sectional curvature of 'the rounded extremity, the lower extremity of the extended portion of one member seating in the open recess of an opposite member when said members are. in interlocking engagement, and a slide movable along the parts to be opened and closed, said slide engaging the interlocking members to separate and unlock the same, or to move said members into interlocking enga ement, the shank of each of themembers ing bifurcated and straddling a marginal portion of one of the parts.
