This invention relates to improvements in the construction ofa flexible bracelet or chain formed of a` plurality ot' Iinkumts hingedly connected together; and the object of this invention is to provide a plurality of units, the construction of which is such that the .unitsmay be detached one from the other by a manualmanipulation for the pur pose of extending orA shortening the operating'length ofthe/bracelet.
Afurther objectofthe-V invention is to provide a bracelet having' an open back anda top wall havingy openings therethrough to form* an ornamental design with a means for connecting-the-unitstogether and So located as not to obstruct any of the openings through the braceletwhereby the arm of the Wearer'or the surface on which' the bracelet is mounted-*may be viewed throughthese open-mosto contrast with the color ofthe metal orming the braceletland'so enhance the appearance thereof.

practical and durable construction I have provided awlinki consisting of a frame and a shell embracing the frame of such construction that. the frames of `the diterentunits may bedetachably connected together and made of material to withstand abusive treatment V.and the shell covering these frames n mayhbe of more precious metal to enhance the appearance ot the bracelet7 the frame being so constructedaml mounted in the shellthat apair of armsare movable at oney end relative to the shellto permit. of manual, manipulation for.' detachably I connectingV nected together by a cross-bar .15 and secured adjacent oneend byrolling portions 17 cut from the stock of the flanges 13 intonotches 18 in the edgeot the arms14. The portions and the side walls 12 to receive a linger or projection 22 integral with and extending laterally from the free end ot' the arm. This linger after passing through the opening 20 extends into a recess 23 in the side wall 12 to have a bearing therein to support its end and better resist a longitudinal strain upon the different links.
ln order to detach the link units, tweezers 21, a pin or the like, may be inserted through an opening 25 in the flanges to engage and move the arms 1l inwardly to the dotted line position shown in Figure 5, thus withdrawing the projections or lingers 22 from their recessed bearings and the openings 20 in the ears 19 to permit detachment ol the units one from the other. lt will thus be seen that the frame portions lll of the units are connected directly one to the other and as these frame portions are hidden by the shell they may be. made ol hardened base metal to withstand abusive treatment, whereas the shell may be oil precious metal to make the bracelet attractive and ornamental in appearance.
lt will also be observed that the lrame 1G is of skeleton torni having a cross-bar 15 bridging between the arms ll and is positioned about the border or ends and sides of the shell so that the openings 2G forming an ornamental design in the top wall ol the shell will not be obstructed by the frame but will permit the arm of the wearer or the surface on which the bracelet is mounted to be viewed through these openings to contrast with the metal and thus by contrast set out the bracelet and the design cut therein to enchance the appearance thereof.
The fingers 22 and the arms 14 are formed by striking the metal to draw up these iingers and thus the entire f 'ame is of one piece and as it is secured in the shell by bending the portion of the shell into engagement therewith no solder or rivets are needed in the production thereof, which is a great saving and advantage in manufacture.
The modilication shown in Figure 8 has the recesses 23 extending through the side wall so that a small instrument may be inserted through the side wall to withdraw the pin from opening 2() instead of using an opening 25 in the flanges. Further, the arms l-l are oll'set as at 27 to align the free ends with the side walls.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but l desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible,
the invention being defined and limited only 6o by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A bracelet comprising a series of units connected togethereach unit comprising a shell having top and side walls, a. pair olf flexible arms separate from said shell and carried thereby, means l'or securing said arms in position against longitudinal movement adjacent said side walls, but permit lateral flexing oi' one end thereof, and formations on opposite ends of said arms consisting ol projections and recesses therefor for detachably securing said units together.
2. A bracelet comprising a series of frames having resilient side arms with openings in one ol' their ends, lingers on the opposite ends of the arms engaging the openings in tl i arms of the next adjacent frame, and a shell lor each frame fixedly secured to one end of each arm and leaving the other end ot cach arm movable relative to said shell for detachahly connecting the frames together.
3. A bracelet comprising a series of units connected together, each unit comprising a shell having top and side walls, inwardlyextending flanges on said side walls, a resilient arm mounted against longitudinal bodily movement along each side wall beneath the flange thereol and extending beyond the side wall with an opening therein, a linger on the opposite free end of each rarm l'or engaging the opening in the extending end of the arm of the next unit, the free end of said arms being movable inwardly to disengage the linger from the opening to detach the units.
4, A bracelet comprising a series ol' units connected together, each unit comprising a shell having top and side walls, inwardlyextending flanges on said side walls, a resilient arm mounted along each side wall beneath the flange thereof and extending beyond the end ot' the side wall with an opening therein, means for securing the extending ends of said arms in position, a linger on the opposite lree end of each of said arms, each side wall having a recess lo receive the end of a linger, each side wall flange having an opening through which said arms may be engaged to move it inwardly to receive the oppositely-extending end of the adjacent arm and permit said linger to extend through the opening therein whereby a detachable connection of the units may be. obtained, and a stop lip extending from each flange to limit the inward movement of its arm.
