FINISH 'MEMBER'.
This invention relates to lfinish membersy and morey particularly to finish members for vehicle bodies for covering the; protruding.
frame members and appurtenances carried thereby to producea finished assembly with or without the presence of bumpers. v c
. It is nowv quitey generally the. practice in vehicle constructions and particularly in motor vehicleconstructions, to extend or protrude the ends of the vehicleframe forwardlyand rearwardly of the body yof the'vehicle 9 and to attach thereto the brackets oriot-her fixtures bymeans of `which ythe ends of the springs are attached and also bymeans of which the bumpers,v if provided, are attached. Owing to the material of which the frame members and brackets are made, it isvnot customary nor convenient to provide these parts with a finish as attractive as. or in 2o keeping with the remainder of the vehicle.
Furthermore in .View of the character J-of the" finish of these parts, dust, dirt and other foreign material more readily adheres thereto and thus makes it ,impractical to lkeep the appearance of this portion of the vehicle yin keeping with the remainder.
More particularly, diliiculty is experienced at'the forward end of thevehicle in dislodging dirt, dust, and the like from the crevices and joints between the frame and the bumper bracket or spring shackle and from the spaces betweenv the parts of the-bracket and'spring shackle. Furthermore the pres. ence of these appurtenances addllittle, if anyn 1. thing7 to the symmetry and finished appearance of the vehicle. Likewise at the rear end of the vehicle it is usually customary to arrange the gasoline tankbetween the protruding ends of the frameand' to provide the ends of theseA frame members with bumper brackets and spring shackles. As a consequence difficulty is experienced at this point in cleaning the vehicle so as to dislodge the dirt which accumulates in. th cracks and crevices. f
One of the primary objects of .this invention isto provide sheet metal finishing pieces entirely coveringthe exposed portions of the vehicle 'frame to thus produce a finished assembly with or without thebumpers being inplace.l These' finishing pieces'have downwardly extending portions overlying the ends of the frame and the 'outer faces of the bumper brackets and-areheld'in place by.A

ployed. Members constituting fittings are provided and may be employed to secure'the bumpers, if used, tothe bumper brackets ory may bearranged directly in engagement with the downwardly, extending portions of the finishing-members. These members enhance the decorative appearance of the finished assembly. Y f
.Another object of this inventionis to provide finish members which will overlie the g5 frame members` and the appurtenances connected thereto-or associated therewith, which memberswill cover and substantially. conceal those parts which,by reason of the ma-` terial of which they are' made, are not` given a -nish equalto or consistent with the re-y mainder of the vehicle. By this invention these finish members also provide means for substantially lconcealing K- thev connection bebers and between the frame members and the spring shackles and in addition .provide a.` smooth surface which may be provided with a inishaconsistent with the remainder of the vehicle. and which may as av consequence be readily cleaned and polished.
The several objects, of this invention as well as anillustrative embodiment of the detailsof Lone example of theinvention will be made more apparent asthis description proceeds, especially when considered in con-,- nection with the accompanying drawings,
wherein Figure 1 is a` fragmentary top plan viewl of a portion of a vehicle frame with my in-A vention associated therewith'.
Figure 2/is a fragmentary side elevation of the structure illustrated in Figure 1.
Figure 18 is a view'similar to Figure 1 of the rear portionv of the vehicle frame'. member. 'Y
Figure 4 is a side elevationyof the struc ture illustrated in Figure 3.
Figureris a fragmentary front kelevation showing a detail of the construction at the front ofthe vehicle, and p v f Figure 6 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the plane indicated by line 66` in Figure 2.
Referring now particularly to the drawings wherein like reference Acharacters indicate like parts, it will be noted that in Figf ures l and 2 there is illustrated 'fragmenta-y rily one of the side framememberslof the vehicle provided withv aprotruding or proyjectingf forward' end l1 which extends beyond the radiator 12 of the vehicle. The
iov
Attached to the forward l end V112 of *thel frame member 10 is a bumper bracket 14 to which the bumper 15 is adapted to becon-y nected.
The finish member at the frontl isy pro vided by extending the hood sill 14 forwardly as indicated at 16 and shaping the same'so that it is substantially U-shaped in.. cross section to thus provide-atop 17` andv tending "forward flange 19 `overlies -the for ward'fac'e of the bracket 14 thus producing a .finished `assembly bumper in place. The forward rend 19 of the' finish member is preferably arranged contiguous to orin engagement with the front face of thebracket y14: and may be secured thereto by means ofa fitting or plate member for members 2O secured inplace by bolts 21.'- -The frontfitting 20, as willbe ob`` vious, is duplicated atthe forward end of both of the frame ymembers and the inner face `of each may be yprovided withy a recess 22 for accommodating the inner horizontal bar ofthe'bumper 15. When bumpers arel not provided the fitting vplates 2O are se-v curedvdirectly against the dependingl flanges 19 of the finish members but when the bumper 15 is employed the inner horizontal bar ofthe bumper bears against the forward end 19 of each finish member to thus hold the finish member in place, and the vfinish plates 2O are then put into position, as indicatedr in Figures 1 and 2, and secured in place by the bolts 21.
ends ofthe frame. membersl are indicated by i `the reference character 23 and :the gas tank,
i so' i es;
whichis usually located between these frame member ends is indicated by thereference character 241. One of the rear bumper brack-y ets -isfindicated by the reference `character2 The finish strip isfindicated generally by the reference characterr27 and comprises a top28, sides 29. and a depending rear end `30 which overlies:
the, face of the bumper brackets. The `finish member overlies the tank 24:, frame members 23 and brackets 25 and the depending end 30 extends between the bracket and the inner bar ofthe bumper 26. They bumpcris then secured in place by means of boltsor the like 31 `which are the finishmembers equivalent to the finish plate 2,0 at the front of the vehicle'. `'It' is obvious that vany desiredor evenv without thel more elaborate-type of fittings mayialso be provided at the rear end asfor instance, fit" ting plates such asyemployed at the front member when a bumper is not used thus bumper4 in place. y
From the foregoing it will be readily apparent thatin` accordancey with .this invenproducing av finished assembly with kno tion a means is provided forfproducing a.y y
finished assembly, with lor withoutibmnpers and` alsoforcovering the protruding `por-v tions of the frame ofy the'vehicle` andthe brackets or 'otherappurtenancescarried;
thereby soas to concealthese parts. These finish'y members mayl be formedV of sheet. metal and conveniently providedv withy ai surface which may be'readily freedcfidirt and dust and kept clean l and polished consistentwith the remainder of the vehicle.
