ANCHOR POST FOR 'WINDSHIELDS.
Application filed July 15,
To all 007mm. it may concern Be it known that I. CHRISTOPHER S. Roennrsoiv, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Anchor Post for lVindshields. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an anchor post for windshields and is primarily designed for use in connection with a side window attachment for auton'iol'iiles such as disclosed in Patent No. 1,383,027, issued to me on June 28, 1921.
In my patented structure there are used side windows mounted for sliding movement but it has been found in practice that the connection between these sliding windows and the side posts of the windshield could not be made wind or rainproof.
It is an object of the present invention to provide posts so constructed that when the side windows above the front doors of the automobile are slid forward an airtight and watertight joint is provided. It is also designed to provide a post which is durable in construction and can be substituted readily for the ordinary side or anchor post installed at the factories.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the prel'erred form of the invention has been shown.
In said. drawings- Figure 1. is a side elevation of a portion of automobile equipped with the im provements constituting the present invert tion.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the anchor post.
Figure 3 is an elevation showing the in nor side of the post.
Figure 4 is an enlarged section on line 44, Figure 3.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a portion of an automobile structure on the front door 2 of which is moun ed frame 3 carrying the Serial No. 484,980.
front window l. The top 5 extends over this window and the posts constituting the present invention are adapted to be placed between the body 1 and the top 5 where they will constitute abutments for the front por tions of the. frames 3 at the two sides of the car. Each of these posts, which has been indicated at 6, comprises a bar having a tongue 7 extending downwardly from the outer side thereof and so shaped as to fit snugly against the outer surface of the adjacent portion of the body 1. A shoulder 8 extends inwardly from the upper portion of this tongue and constitutes the base of the bar, the inner side of the bar being gradually curved laterally as shown at 9 up to the free end of the shoulder so as to give a rounded or finished appearance to the bar when viewed from. in front and back. A dowel 10 extends downwardly from the shoulder 8. Another dowcll 11 extends upwardly from the top of the post and both the shoulder 8 and the upper end of the post. which are preferably parallel, are slightly beveled relative to the front face of the post so that when the post is set up in the usual inclined position as shown in Figure. 1 the ends thereof will lie substantially horizoutal. Dowel 10 is threaded to receive a lock washer and a nut whereby the post can be fastened in position securely. The dowel 1 L is adapted to be anchored in the top. Extending rearwardly from the outer side of each post G is a flange 12 which extends longitudinally of the post and is adapted to lap the forward end of the frame 3 when said frame is in closed position. Recesses 13 are provided where necessary in the in nor sides of the post. to receive the pivot members of the windshield.
It is to be understoml that the posts herein described can be. substituted readily for the standard windshield POSfS and when placed in p-asition will he particularly use" ful in connection. with side windows such as disclosed in my patent referred to. am. only do they seal the joints between the posts and windows but they also add strength to the structure without detracting from the appearance thereof.
What is claimed is:-
1. A windshield anchor post for open body oars comprising a bar having a longitudinal flange extending rearwardly from the outer side thereof, the ends of the bar .lJQing obliquely disposed. relative to the bar and parallel, said ends being adapted to lie horizontal While the post is in an upstanding inclined position, nonalining dowels extending i'i'onithereepective ends of the bar and perpendicular to said ends for engagement with the body and eollapsibletop respectively of an automobile, and a downwardly extending tongue at the outer side of the post shaped to conform with the contour of that portion of an automobile body to he (olden-ted thereby; the flange being extended to the lower terminal of the tongue.
The. ooinhimition with the body in'd collapsible top of an autol'nohile, oi? a'windshield anchor post substituted for the standard Windshield onehor post and comprising a bar having obliquely disposed ends adapted to lie horizontally when the post is inclined upwardly, nonalining dowels extending from andperoendieularto the ends for engaging the body and collapsible top longitudinal flange on the bar.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own. I have hereto afiixed my 'signa ture in the presence oi two Witnesses.
