IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.166,949, dated August 24, 1875; application filed June 7, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARnrsoN F. THURS- TON, of Porter, in the county of Oxford and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a detail, showing the drainer in section. Fig. 3 is a view, ine-part section, of one of the bridges.

The object of my invention is to produce an improvement in wash-boilers.

My invention consists of a wash-boiler composed of two parts, one of which is the base or bottom part a. This is of the general form shown in the. drawings, and is shallow. This part rests upon the stove or over the fire, and receives the water before it is heated. Within this part are placed the chambers b c d. These chambers have openings e at the bottom, to permit the water to pass into them. They have also the perforations f, into which enter the pipes g and h, which project up into the upper part of the boiler. The object of these chambers is to aid in forcing the heated water up through the pipes g and h into the upper part of the boiler.

The water, being heated and conned within these chambers, is, by steam and expansion, forced up through the pipes before named into and upon the clothes placed in the upper part.

The upper part of my boiler is composed of the plate j, receptacle k, pipes g and h, before mentioned, and the drainers l. The plate j is the cover to the bottom part a. The pipes g and h extend down into the chambers b o d. The receptacle 7c receives the clothes to be cleansed. The drainers Z conduct the water received into 7c back again into the bottom part, so that a continuous current of water through the clothes is maintained. This water, returning into the chambers b o d, is again forced upward through the pipes, as before described. The inner pipes h are shorter than the height of the sides of the receptacle 7c.- Thus, from them the water is forced upwardly through the clothes yplaced in the receptacle. The side pipes g extend up on the outside of the receptacle k, and, being curved at the tops, throw the water in upon the clothes, and upon them at a height nearly equal to that of the sides of the receptacle 7c.

A cover may be fitted to the top of the receptacle. The plate j is secured to the top of the bottom part ct.

I do not claim the wash-boiler having pipes through which the heated water is forced upwardly through the clothes from a reservoir beneath the receptacle in which the clothes are placed.

In order to admit the water into the compartments b o l I have caused to be made in the bridges t' the openings n, (shown in Fig. 3,) which are closed by valves m, working from the inside. Thus, when the water has entered the chambers the pressure of the steam will close the valves, and thus insure the throw of the hot water up through the pipes.

I do not claim in a wash-boiler the con1- bination of a false bottom, having two holes provided with caps, tubes, frame, and valves, (as shown in the patent to J. Reinig, No. 138,285, of 1873.)

I also disclaim a wash-boiler attachment having the rim, the bottoms, valves, and pillars, (as shown in Tinner and Tregears Patent No. 134,017, of 1872.) t

My invention differs in structure and arrangement from these, and contains a different combination.
