My invention relates to locks,'and has special reference to looks that are particularly adapted for use on thedoors'of safe deposit boxes. v 9 p 5 One of the objectsof my invention is to provide a lock for thedoors of safe deposit boxes which issimple in construction and reliable in operation.
Another object of the' invention is toprovide a'lo'ck for safe deposit'box doors in which novel and improved safe guarding cover plate of the lock-case being broken away; i a h c .Fig. 2 is a sectional view, partlyin elevation and on an enlarged scale, taken on the line2- -2 of Fig.1; V a t Fig. 3 isa view eorresponding to Fig." 1, but showing the lock-bolt ,in' retracted. or unlocked'po'sition and the front cover plate of the lock-case, removed;
Fig. 7 is a detail view in perspective of a plug or closure member forming a compo nent part of the lock; and h .Figs. 8, 9 and 10 are detail sldeHVieWS fOf tumblers that constitute component parts'of the lock.
The lock illustratedin the sfis rovided with a case- 2 and a lock-bolt & av-
mg twoposts or ,fencesfi and 8Q Associated with the fence Hare tumblers .10 having gating's 12, and associated with the fence 8 are shown projected and aportion' ofjthe front tumblers 14 having gatings 16, the latter tumblers being in the form of leversjthat are pivoted on a pinj-17' and are pressed downwardly by springs 1.9. To retract the lock-:boltthe tumblers 10 arefirs'tlifted to position their gatings in alinement with the fence 6 by means of a key inserted in a key plug '18, and then the tumblers 14 are lifted to; position theirgatings in alinement with the fence ,8' by meansof a key'inserted in a key plug 20, the key. plug being suitably connected withthe lock-bolt, so' that' upon the continued movement thereof after the tumblers 14 have been thus positioned, the lock-bolt may be retractedJIn the use of the deviceon the doors ofsafe deposi'tboxes the tumblers 10 are adapted to be operated byI neans of a guard orcustodia'ns keyyand the tumblers M by means bf a change or Except as hereinafter described; the parts abovereferredto niay be'offa well known construction; Y I
In the use of the lock illustrated'in the drawingsfthe keys are preferably shipped,
to lthe"s'afe deposit box (company separate from the locks, andin accordance withlmy nvention novel and improved means is; provided whereby the proper change or renters key for the lockof; any particular box can "only be determined after the box has been rented; It is desirable, however; that the f custodian [shall be able to lock and unlock the door of the box in order'to disp'la the ,boxesjto prospective renters. To provi e for this, my improved lock isprovide'd with mechanism whereby thecustodian may operateanyfof the locksby mean'sof a sin le inaster-key, but provision is made where y this mechanism'may be rendered inoperative after the box has been rented. This'masterkey mechanism" comprises ain'aster-key tumbler 22 which is provided with a laterally extending pin 24 that extendsthrough slots 26 in the several tumbler levers 14. The
In the illustrated construction in order'to render the master-key mechanism inoperative, the pin 24 is detachably secured to the that the lock can no longer be operated bymeansofthe master key. in
In order to'determine the proper change orarenterls key to use on any particularlock, the lock-bolt carries a designating number on its outer face which is visible through an. openin 28 in .the rear wall of the lockcase and 'treproper change or renters .key foritheolock carries a corresponding number. Before renting the box, however, this opening is closed so as to conceal the num ber-onthe lock-bolt, by a plug 30 which is held in place by the head 25 of theypin or ;s.crew .24, the pin or screw extending through ;a clearance slot in-the plug and the head of the screw substantially covering the clear- ;ance slot. With this construction, .upon re- :moving the screw 124 after the box has been @rented .torender the master key mechanism inoperative, the plug30 may be removed so as "to uncover the designating character on :the lock-bolt, whereupon the proper change ikey may bra-determined. v
-Asshown in Figs. land 2 .of 'thedrawings, when the lock bolt has been projected and before the master key mechanism has been rendered inoperative, the master key tumbler 22 and one or more of the change skey tumblers are held in a slightly elevated position by the screw 24, the downward movement of the screw being limited by enzgagement with the lower end wall of the scle'arance slot in the plug 30, In the illustrated construction, the slot is not made longeriorthe reasonitis desirable that the head :of the screw shall substantially cover the slotiin' all positions of the screw. It,
may be noted, however, that the master key tumbler land the changekey tumblers drop sutficiently to dog the bolt which, of course, xi-sall that is necessary.
.In order that the lock manufacturer may easily change the number of the lock-bolt after the renter has given up the box to -which the clock has been applied, the numiberiis af'lixedon wa plate-32 which is detachrably secured by solder,vrivets or other suitable means on the lock-bolt.
In order to prevent the screw 24 from being reinserted, a blocking plate '34 in the form of a tumbler is pivoted on the pivot pin'l'i' between the master key tumbler 22 and the foremost. one or the change key tumblers 14, said blocking tumbler being pressed downwardly by a spring 36. When the screw 24 is in place the blocking tumbler .34 restsflthereon, but upon removing thereof or thescope of the appended claims.
