In thls type of mechanism it is sometimesdesirable to rotate the steel independently of reciprocatlon thereof such as when drill bits are removed or secured to the drill rods through a usual threaded connection and it is an ob ect of my invention to provide improved means for accomplishing this function. A further object is to provide improved means whereby the pressure generated within the cylinder during the reciprocation of the drill rod may be relieved. i

I have shown my invention embodied in a drillingmechanismof the type disclosed in a copending application of Henry H.
Mercer, Ser. No. 472,546, filed May 25,1921
in view of which it is thought only necessary to briefly describe the same. The mechanism comprises a pair of vertical channel iron standards 1 and 2 mounted upon suit:
The worm wheel constitutes a part ofthe rotation mechanism which will be later described and forms a part ofthe presentinvention. Connected as by a collar 24 to the lower end of the. piston rod is a hollow drill steel 25 to which any suitable type of bit 26 may be threadedly connected. Meshing with the worm wheel is a worm 27 rotatably mounted within the lower head 7 and having a ratchet 28 disposed on the outer end of the worm shaft 29, while a pawl 30 is suitably mounted within an arm 31mounted upon the" shaft '29. The ,free end of said arm is connected to the lower head 15 as by a suitable connecting link32 so that upon positive reciprocation of the cylinder 14 bit 26. It is not thought necessary togo into detail as to the particular means for actuating the crank shaft 7 or for raising and lowering the frame carrying the cylinder and piston 14andJ19. As-said means does not enter into the present invention it will suffice to say-that during raising of said frame it is possible; to continuously drive the crank shaft 9' as clearly disclosed in the above mentioned copending application.
'During reciprocation of the cylinder while the steel is held against reciprocation it may bedesired to relieve the pressure which would otherwisebe generated from thecylinder 14. This Z neans comprises suitable valves 36and 37 having communication respectively with the cylinder 14 and the chamber 18, these valves being adapted to be simultaneously actuated as through suitable lever arms 38 andlinks 39 connected to di amet-rically opposite points of a manually controlled lever pivotally'mounted upon the side of the cylinder 14. The exhaust valve mechanism as-described inthe application mentioned above is shown at 41 while inlet valvesare .indioated at 42, thus by proper manipulation ofthe'handle 40, valves 36 and 37 are adapted to relieve the before mentioned pressure which would otherwise be continuously generated due to the continuous reciprocation of the cylinder and operation ofvalves 41 and 42. In case it should be desired to pass cleansing fiuid through the hollow steel while the steel is stationary,-the valves 36 and 37 could be closed, inwhich case pressure would be generated and-stored within the chamber 18 from whence it' would passthrough ports 43 disposed within a sleeve 44 extending upwardly from the lowermost portion of the head 16 and into a hollow member 45 extending-upwardly from thepiston 19 and having telescopic engagement with the mem ber- 44 and an associatedpacking member 46.

While I have in thisapplication "specifically described one form which: my invention rnay assumein practice, it will be understood that this form ofthe same is. shown for purposes of-il'lustr-ation and that the invention may benmodified and' embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope or the appendedclaims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i

Aidrilling mechanism comprising rela tively reciprocable cylinderand piston elements, means cooperating with one of said-elements for-"effecting reciprocation of theother of said elements, adrill rod reciprocable with one of said elements, means for rotating said drill rod, and means for positively holding said element with which said drill rod is reciprocablegagainst reciprocation while rotation of said drill rod and reciprocation of vthe other element are continued.
3. 7. A drilling mechanism comprising a piston, power operated means for effecting reciprocation of said piston including a cylinder, a drill rod reciprocable with said piston, means including a ratchet mechanism operatively connected to said cylinder for intermittently rotating said drill rod, and means for positively holding said piston against reciprocation while rotation of said drill rod is continued.
