The present invention relates to combers of the Heilmann type having rocking nippers. and detaching means consisting of rollers In these combers the cushion plate a has for its object to ensure that during the detaching operation the lap will remain in engagement withthe needles of the fixed comb because the fibres tend always to escape from the combing action of the needles of lo the fixed comb and to pass beneath the needles rather than through them.
The object oi the present invention is to eifect improvements; in: the means for ca'rry' ing and operating the cushion plate or pressus ing in device, and which secures very smooth movement of the cushion plate dependent solely upon the movement of the lower niper iaw.
With the above and. other objects in view,
the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

Thecus'hion plate during the increment towards the circular comb n of the whole of the nippersmust then move relative to the nippers d in such manner thatwhenitreaches the combing position (shown in dotted lines) theno'se of the cushion plate a; will be withdrawn beneath the nippers and occupy position a outside of the path of the needles of the circular comb n so as not to interfere with the combing of the lap and so as to avoid contact with the needles which would damage them.
When the combing of the lap is completed 95 he after passage of the needles of the comb n the nippers are displaced againin the opposite direction, i. e. towards the detaching rollers 0, 0 for; the detaching operation. During this displacement the cushion 100 plate a will'againslide beneath the nippers d and be moved in relation to the nippers which will bring it again into the'position it should occupy at the commencement of the detaching operation viz.the position 5 represented in Figs. 1,2, 3 and 4. The d etaching operation again commencestas described above and the operations are reposted in this order. The plate a should thus receive relative movements with respect 1 to two distinct devices but if the plate a does not at the end of the detaching operation and before the commencement of the movement of the whole towards the combing position, occupy always the same position in relation to the nippers d (following a modification of the form of the movement of the fixed comb 6 due to change in the cotton being combed) its final position a will not always be the same and serious disadvantages will result, the plate a not being withdrawn sufliciently beyond the reach of the teeth of the comb n.
The actuating means forming the subject of the present invention has for its object to cause the cushion plate always to occupy the same position during combing whatever be the form of movement of this plate, during the detaching operation to follow the fixed comb. This means is essentially characterized in that the members imparting to the cushion plate a in the first place a move ment following the movement of the fixed comb and in the second place a movement relatively to the nippers are rigidly connected together in such manner that the cushion plate retains always in relation to each of those two members the same relative positions.
In Fig. 1 the cushion plate a is carried by a small knee lever s pivoting about a pivot t carried by an arm a on the carriage carrying the whole of the nippers (Z, d and other parts such as the fixed 6 and grid 2'.
The end 9 of the pedal lever s is pivoted to a rod r itself pivoting about the pivot 41. The position of this point o is so selected that if the latter remained fixed in space during the displacement of the whole of the nippers that is to say, from the detaching position to the combing position the plate a would be moved relatively to the nippers d, that is to say, would be displaced from the position a to that (1 shown in dotted lines I in Fig. 1. Thus these alternate movements of the whole of the nippers from d to (1 would produce the relative alternate movement of the plate from a to a To obtain the other movement of the plate i. e., the movement of displacement to conform to that of the fixed comb 6 during the detaching operation the point 1; to which the lever 1" is pivoted is located at the end of a lever pivoting about the fixed pivot to and pivoting at .2 on the rod 2 effecting the movement of the comb b of a form determined by the profile of the cam 0 carried by the shaft f and acting on 2 through the medium of the lever 02 pivoted at a fixed point m It will thus be seen that if at the conclusion of the detaching operation the plate a occupied a position different from that which it should occupy so as to come always into the position a i. e., so as to occupy always the same position during the detaching operation, the point 2; about which the lever 7* pivots during the translatory movement from detaching position to combing positlon is also displaced by an amount corresponding to that of the displacement of the cushion plate a during the detaching operation and consequently the relative movement of the point 9 in relation to the arm it remains always the same and the same may be said of the definite position of the plate a.
Fig. 2 shows a variant of the actuating means shown in Fig. 1. The only diflierence compared with Fig. 1 consists in the arrangement of the levers 0c pivoting about m and w and transmittingthe movement of the earn 6 on the one hand directly at .2 to the actuating rods of the fixed comb b and on the other hand through the medium of the rod 2 pivoting at 2 on the lever y to the point o at which is pivoted the rod 1- eiiecting as in Fig. 1 the displacement of the plate a. The operation isthe same as in Fig. 1.
Fig.3 shows a third embodiment of the new mechanism in which the rod 1' controlling the movement of the plate a is a lever pivoting on the one hand about the axis u carried by the arm u and on the other hand at 93 on the support for the plate a. The lever r terminates in a roller 13 adapted to roll over the tail o of the lever y to which is imparted at 2 the movement of the cam e.
In this manner the action of the cam 0 of the lever y on the roller 1 carrying the plate pivoted at 7' causes the advance during the detaching operation of the plate in accordance with the movement of the fixed comb Z) and the operation is analogous to that of the construction shown in Fig. 1 because the roller 0" remains stationary during the movement of the carriage u from the detaching position of the combing position, and the lever 7 turns about the pivot of this roller.
Fig. 4 shows a variant analogous to that shown in Fig. 3. In this construction the cam o. and the roller 1- of Fig. 3, are replaced by a link '0 pivoted at the one end at o the end of the lever y and on the other end 15 on the end of the lever 1' to which is pivoted at T the support of the cushion plate. The operation is analogous to that of the arrangement shown in'Fig. 3.
In all this embodiments it has been assumed that the movement of displacement of the fixed comb is eifected by means of the cam just as the displacement from the detaching position to the combing position of the nippers has been assumed to be effected by means of a lever pivoted on a fixed pivot of the frame work of the comber, but it is obvious that the invention is applicable whatever he the arrangement employed for efiecting these two movements of advance of the cushion plate and of translation of the nippers carrying carriage the mechanical means ensuring their connection may vary as also the devices themselves.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In COIIlbil'lg mechanism of the Heilmann type, in combination with a lower nipper jaw and means to actuate the same, a lever permanently pivotally connected to and carried by said jaw, a cushion plate arranged below said nipper jaw and pivotally connected to said lever, and means to actuate said lever and hence also said cushion plate.
2. Combing mechanism as claimed in claim 1, in which the cushion plate lever actuat ing means is independent of the means for actuating the lower jaw.
