PROPELLING SYSTEM FOR BOATS.
Application filed November This inventionrelates to means for propelling a vessel, which embodies an electric motor for operating the propeller, the current for said motor being supplied from a generator which is operated by the inrush of water through an intake pipe adapted to be arranged beneath the water line.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the fol lowing detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed. i
Inthe drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vessel showing the propelling mechanism by dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view showing the inlet pipe in section, and the arrangement of the turbine wheels for forcing the water through the pipe and operating the generator.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view showing the inlet pipe in plan and the discharge pipes which open at the sides of the vessel.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of the rear of the vessel showing the propeller and the electric motor therefor.
Referring to the drawings in detail 10 indicates generally a vessel of any well known construction, which has supported thereon a pipe 11 adapted to be arranged beneath the water line to permit water to pass through this pipe for a purpose to be herein after described. Projecting from one end of the pipe are divergently disposed discharge pipes 12 which open at the sides of the vessel, and through which the water is discharged from the intake pipe 11. This intake pipe is formed with enlarged sections 13 and 14 respectively7 the former having arranged therein an electric motor 15 which operates a pump 16 also arranged in the enlarged portion 13. This pump operates to force the water through the pipe 11 in the direction of the turbine wheel 17, the latter operating in the enlarged portion 14 of said pipe and fixed upon the shaft of the generator 18. The current for the motor 15 is supplied from the battery or other suitable source indica-ted at 19. As shown in Figure 1 the current from the generator 18 is 6, 1924. Serial No. 748,205.`
utilized to operate an electric motor 20 which is operatively associated with the propeller shaft 21. kMamifestly by reason of this arrangement, the passage of water through the pipe 11 is utilized to operate the generator 18, to supply the necessary current for the motor 20, which in turn operates the propeller 22.
As above stated the pipe 11 is arranged beneath the water line, and when the vessel is at rest, the latter can be put into motion by simply closing the circuit to the motor 15. As illustrated in Figure 1 a switch 25 is included in this circuit, and it is only necessary to close the switch in order to operate the motor 15. When the motor 15 operates, the pump 16 is called into use and forces the water entering the pipe 1,1 through the latter in the direction of the turbine wheel 17, thereby rotating the latter for the purpose of operating the generator 18. The current used in connection with the motor 20 which operates the propeller 22 is taken from the generator as will be readily understood, and the circuit from thegenerator to the motor 2O includes a switch 26. Consequently' when the switch 26 is closed the motor 20 is operated together with the propeller 22 thereby putting the boat in motion. As the water flows through the pipe 11 for the purpose above mentioned it passes out through the branch pipes12 at either side of the boat. f
Manifestly the boat is operated from the generator 18, while the battery 19 is used in connection with the motor 15 and pump 16. However, the battery is also included in circuit with the generator 18 by means of a switch 24, and manifestly when the switch 24 is closed the generator also funcw tions to recharge the battery; This switch 24 can be opened or closed when desired, and when the boat is at rest` the switch 25 vto the motor 15 is open7 and also the switch 26 from the generator to the motor 20.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention `will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is:
In combination with a boat having a propeller of an electric circuit including a motor pipe for operating said pump, an Velectric circuit including the pump and last mentiened motor and including a. battery for said motor, a switch arranged between the battery and `Inoto,' Said battery being also included in the circuit with said generator, and a switch located between the battery and `mnerator, whereby the battery may be recharged trein the generator when desired.
In testimony whereof aix iny signature.
