This invention relatesto a combined rail chair and joint for track rails, and hasfor its object to provide, in a after setforth, a combined chair and joint fi structure for supporting and connecting together in a thoroughly efiicient manner a air of track rails in opposed end relation.

Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth,

With the foregoing and other objects in viewthe invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement 0 parts as hereinafter, more specifically described, andillustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

between these latter and the bases 5 of. the track rails 8,741 is a rail chair element conslsting of a rectangular body portion 6,provided at each end with a depending flange and said flanges are indicatedat 7, 8. The width of the body portion 6 corresponds to the width of a track rail base 5. The length of the body portion 6 is such that the flanges 7, 8 will each abut one side of a tieand which is termed the outer side thereof. Formed integral with the lower face of the body portion 6, and spaced trom theflanges 7, 8 are depending flanges 9, 10. The flange 9 opposes the flange 7 and the flange 1O lop-i poses the flange 8. The flanges 9fandll0 abut against what may be termed the inner sides'oi: the ties. The flanges 7 to. 10 prevent the lengthwise shifting of the chairwhen mounted upon the ties. Projecting from one side edge of the body portion 6 are a pair of laterally disposed spaced lugs, 11, 12, each having its outer or free end formed with a vertical notch 13. The lug 11 is positioned between the flanges 7 and 9' andthe lug 12 between the flanges 8 and 10. Formed integral with that side edge of the body portion 6, from which project the lugs 11, 12, is an arm 14 positioned between the flanges 9 and 10 and formed in ,proximityto its free end, centrally thereoflwith a vertically disposed opening 15. Formed integral with and projecting laterally from the other side edge of the body portion 6 are a pair of spaced lugs 16, 17 and integral with the tops of the lugs 16, 17 is a connecting bar 18 having its upper face inclining dOwnwardlytowards its outer side edge as indicated at 19.. The bar 18 projects from the upper sides of the lugs 16, 17 and forms a support. Notches 20 extend through the outer ends of the lugs 16, 17 and through theouter side of the bar 18 in proximity to the ends of the latter. The bar 18 has its inner side edge provided with a shoulder21 for a purpose to be presently referred to. The upper face '19 ofithe bar 18 is arranged above the upperitace of the body portion 6.

Positioned against the opposite sides of the track rails 3,.4sare fish plates 22, Q3 and with the former of less thickness throughout than the latter. The fish plate 22 includes, a

vertical arm 2% and a horizontally disposed downwardly inclined arm 25. The fish plate 23 includes a. vertical arm 26 and a horizontally disposed downwardly inclined arm 27. The arm 25 is formed integral with the bottom of the arm 24 and projects outwardly therefrom. The arm 27 is formed integral with the lower end of the arm 26 and projects outwardly therefrom. The arms 24 and 26 are positioned against opposite sides of the webs 28 of the track rails. The arms 25, 27 are seated upon the bases 5 of the track rails and project laterally therefrom. The arm 25 has its outer portion seated on and supported by the bar 18. The arm 27 has its outer portion formed with a vertical opening 29 which aligns with the opening 15.

The fish plates 22, 23 are connected to gether by a coupling member 30 formed of a shank portion 31 and a hook portion 32 and with the latter overlapping the arm 25.

he shank portion 31 is positioned against the lower face of the body portion 6 and plate 1 1 and said shank portion 31 is formed with a vertical opening 33 which registers with the opening 15. Extending down through the opening 29 and openings 15 and 33 is a connecting bolt 34, which carries awasher 35 seating on the upper face of the arm 27 and abutted by the head 36 of the bolt 34. Carried on the lower end of the bolt 34 and binding against the lower face of the shank portion 31 is a securing nut 37. The bolt 34 and nut 37, not only connect the coupling member 30 in position with respect to the fish plates 22, 23 but further provide means for connecting or anchoring the fish plates with the body portion 6 of the rail chair.

Theouter side edges of the arms 25, 27 of the fish plates are formed with notches 38. The notches on the arm 25 register with the notches 20 and the notches formed on the arm 27 register with the notches 13. Extending through said registering notches, overlapping the lower arms of the fish plates and engaging in the ties 1, 2 are securing spikes 39.

The shoulder 21, formed by the inner side edge of the bar 18, has one side edge of the bases of the track rails abut thereagainst. As the arms 25, 27 of the fish plates project beyond the side edges of the bases 5 of the track rails these latter will be retained on the chair, as the lower arms of the fish plates are secured to the ties and further the arms 25, 27 will secure the chair upon the rails by a clamping action thereon. The construction and arrangement of the parts as stated not only couples the fish plates together, but also clamps the fish plates to the rails, the rails to the chair.

The webs 28 of the track rails are provided with openings 39 for the passage of securing bolts 40 and these latter extend neeaaaa through openings 41 formed in the vertical arms of the fish plates and carry securing nuts 42.

It is thought the many advantages of a combined chair and rail joint, in accordance with this invention, can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which fall within thescope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim isi 1. A combined rail chair and joint comprising a chair body for supporting the bases of a pair of track rails and having one side provided with a laterally extending apertured arm and its other side with an 0 set support providing a shoulder for one side edge of the bases of the rails, a pair of oppositely extending fish plates for connection to the track rails and in abutting relation with respect to the Webs and bases thereof, one of said fish plates extending upon said support, a coupling member overlapping the last mentioned fish plate, extending across the lower face'of said chair and formed with an opening registering with the opening in saidarm, and means extending through the other of said fish plates, said apertured arm and member for connecting them together.

2. A combined rail chair and joint comprising a chair body for supporting the bases of a pair of track rails and having one side provided with a laterally extending apertured arm and its other side with an offset support providing a shoulder for one side edge of the bases of the rails a pair of oppositely extending fish plates for connection to the track rails and in abutting relation with respect to the webs and bases thereof, one of said fish plates extending upon said support, a coupling member overlapping the last mentioned fish plate, extending across the lower face of said chair and formed with an opening registering with the opening in said arm, means extending through the other of saidfish plates, said apertured arm and member for connecting them together, said fish plates and offset support being notched, and means extending through said notches for anchoring the fish plates and chair to the rail ties.

3. A combined rail chair and joint comprising a chair body for supporting the bases of a pair of track rails and having one side provided -with a laterally extending apertured arm and its other side with an offset support providing a shoulder for one side edge of the bases of the rails, a pair of oppositely extending fish plates for connection to the track rails and in abutting relation with respect to the webs and bases thereof, one of said fish plates extending upon said support, a coupling member overlapping the last mentioned fish plate, extending across the lower face of said chair and formed with an opening registering with the opening in saidarni, ineans extending through the other of said fish plates, said apertured arm and menibeiflfor eonnecting them together, said fish plates and ofiset support being notched, means extending through said notches for anchoring the fish 10 plates and chair to the rail ties, and spaced pairs of depending flanges opposing the sides of the ties to which the fish plates and chair are anchored,
