CONTROLLING DEVICE.
Application filed December This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in controlling devices and has for its principal object the production of a device of this character wherein provision is made for operating control mechanism through the medium of a time piece, as for example an alarm clock.
A further object of the invention is the production of a device or" this character wherein a novel releasing arrangement is provided under control of a timepiece such as above mentioned.
A further object of the invention is the production of a device of this character wherein provision is made for automatically controlling a valve or similar device through the medium of a novel control arrangement operable by a time piece as for exan'iple an alarm clock wherein by setting the alarm v0t the clock the control will be released by unwinding oi the alarm spring of the time piece.
.Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be here-- inafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating the prefer "ed. form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the invention showing the same in lockingposition, 7
Fig. 9. is a sectional view of the same taken substantially on line of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to that illustrated in Fig. 1 showing the iiwention in released position,
Fig. 41 is an elevational View taken substantially on line l-4t of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view of the invention taken substantially on line 5 5 oi Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional detail of the invention taken substantially on line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to Fig. 1, 1O indi- "ates a conductor pipe and 11 a valve of an approved type controlling passage through the conductor pipe and provided with an operating head 12. The pipe 11 passes through and supports a housing 13 having a hinged side wall 14 and fixed walls 15 providing a compartment 16 within which is located. a trigger mechanism and valve contro em- 7, 1925. Serial No. 73,831.
bodiedin the invention and hereinafter described. y
The trigger mechanism includes a supporting rod 17 mounted in parallel spaced relation with the inside surfaces of the wall 15 by angled end portionslS fixed thereto as at 19 by any suitable means. Adapted for adjustmentlongitudinally oil the supporting ,rod 11 1s a link member 20 connected to the supporting rod by means of a slide 21 havmg spaced angled end portions provided with aligned slots :23 for passage of the link and rod and provided with a wedging member 24% adapted when operated in a certain direction to move the link member 20 into clamping relation with the rod as best illustrated in Fig, 6. i This wedging cam is pivolally connected to the slide by means of pivot pin The link 20 is provided with a horizontal portion 2-6 looped as at 26 for connection with a release linger 27 at one end thereof. The release linger has its opposite end adapted for insertion through a loop 28 formed in a retaining linger 29 having an end in connection with the lower end 30 of the link member. This retaining linger 29 has a portion 31 for engagement with an angled en'd portionBQ formed as an integral part "of a trigger arm 33.. The trigger arm 33 extends through a slot 32 through a bearing plate 33 fixed to the wall in any suitable manner.
The releasing finger 2? is adapted for r leasable connection with a chain ill having one of the links 34: thereof connecied to an operating arm 35 fixed to the operating head 12 of the valve 11. This operating arm 35 is preferably iorn'ied of a member of substantial n'iaterial bent substantially U- shaped with its bight end portion fixed to the operating head 12 by rivets 12 or other suitable means. To the link 34: attached a supporting cable 36 passing over a ,pulley 37 located above the valve and the connection with the angled end por ion 32, releasing the releasing finger 27 from engagen'ient with the loop 28. Upon release of the releasing finger the gravity weight drops down drawing the cable 36 over the pulley 37 operating the controlling arm 35 which operates the valve by reason of its connection to the operating head 12 thereof.
The adjustability between the supporting rod 17 and the link member 20 permits vertical adjustment of the releasing member, above described, to compensate for the position of the trigger arm 33 which is also mounted for adjustment longitudinally with respect to parallel spaced guide rods 39 having angled end portions ell) fixed to the wall 15 by suitable means. i
As best illustrated in Fig. 5, a clip ll is pro ided with curled ends 42 adapted for slidable relation with the guide rods 39 and provided with an opening permitting passage of the end of the trigger arm. The end 43 of this arm is provided with an enlarged head ll ofsnbstantial size to Which a connector member 45 is secured by soldering or the like. This connector serves to connect the trigger arm to the alarm winding key 46 of an alarm clock 4l7. The connector as shown is preferably formed substantially li-shaped with its bight portion 48 fixed to the head 44 as above mentioned and provided with aligned slots 49 in its opposite resilient limbs l5 for the reception of the adjacent portions of the ring 50 of the winding key. This ring 50 is locked in the slots 49 through the medium of a lock strip 51 struck from one of the limbs 45 and extended through a slot 52 formed in the other of the limbs and locked in this position by a lock pin 53 inserted between a curled portion 5% and the adjacent limb. The lock pin attached to one of the limbs 45 through the medium of a flexible member 55 and upon withdrawal of the pin from locking position the limbs of the connector spring in the opposite direction disengaging the ring from the slots permitting removal of the alarm clock.
By adjust-ably mounting the trigger arm it is apparent that the same can be elevated or lowered to compensate for the height of the ring of various makes of time pieces.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that when the alarm spring of the alarm clock 47 unwinds the key thereof is caused to rotate and in turn will cause the trigger arm to also rotate by reason of its connection thereto in the manner described above and as this trigger armcontinues to rotate it releases the retaining finger 29 in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
While I have illustrated and described the invention for use in controlling the valve of a conductor pipe it is apparent that the same can be used for controlling an electric switch or other controlling mechanisms without destroying the utility of the invention or departing from the spirit thereof.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of the invention it is to be understood that various changes and alterations may be carried out in manufacture without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
The invention having been set forth, what I claim as new and useful is l. A device of the class described including a supporting rod, a link member juxtaposed said rod, a slide adapted to retain said link member in sliding engagement with said rod a release member connected to said link member at one end thereof a retaining finger connected to the other end of said link member and adapted to 'releasably retain said release finger, and a trigger arm disposed to engage said retaining finger and adapted to move said finger from engaging position at predetermined times. a
2. A device of the class described including a supporting rod, a link member juxtaposed said rod, a slide adapted to retain said link member in sliding engagement with said rod, said link having a right angularly extending portion at one end thereof, a release finger pivotally connected to said link at the outer end of said right angularly extending portion, a retaining finger pivotally connected to the opposite end of said link and having a. portion formed therein adapted to releasably retain said release finger in substantially parallel relation with said supporting rod and a rotatably mounted trigger arm having an angularlv disposed portion adapted to engage the free end of said retaining finger whereby to free said release finger when said trigger is rotated.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
