This invention g relatesto magical appanr ratus and has special reference'to a card elevating device.
More particularly the invention relates to` of which a card elevating device by means selected cards may be causedto rise from a receptacle such as a tumbler orother drinking glass slowly and noiselessly.
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved and simple device of this character which can'l be readily Vdropped into any ordinary drinking glass capable of holding a pack of V playing cards and which,` when so positioned, maybe released to act on" certain of the cards and cause them to rise one slowly and noiselessly. A
A second important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which iscompact in its nature so that it' may rcadily'be concealed in tlie hand of the person performing the trick.` y
A third important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the cards will rise slowly fromthe` glass while the performer vmay be moving around the stage or room or may be standing by one from the' at a distance Vfrom the glass andits pack ofV cards. t
lith the as will be hereinafter apparentLthe invention consists in general' of certain novel details of construction and con'ibinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the' accompanying acters of reference indicate like several views, and: i
Figure 1 isl aV perspective view vice removed from the glass. i y
Figure 2 is a sidewelevationiof the invern` tionA showing the same in connectionwith a glass and pack of cards.`
Figure 3 is a front view of the invention. 'Figure 4 is a detail section through the line 4-4 ofFigure 3. g
Figure 5 is a detail section on the line 5-5 of Figure 3,
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention as positioned in a drinking lass. n Figure is a perspectiveview of the modidrawings like charparts in the above and other objects in' view of the del of engagement with a lug 2li projecting from lied form with part of the casing broken away to show the interior.
yFigure V8 is a detail section on the line-` 8- 8 of FigureaY.V y 1n the lirstiform of the invention there 1s provided aspringmetal support lhaving at one end a hook 11 which, in use, engages the edgeof a glass G. On the otherfend of the support 10 is a pairof spaced hinge gears y' 12 wherethrough passes a pintle 13. At 141 is a main frame having legs provided with `hinge ears lengaging on the ends of the pintle 13; Colled around the pintle between the ears 12 is a rtorsion spring 16 the ends` of which extend outwardly to bear respectively against the support 10 and frame lil,
the action of the spring being limited by a tension strand or cord 17. At the upper end of the frame 14 is a pair of forwardly extending arms 18 wherein is lixedly mounted ashaft 1ST-on' which is revolubly mounted a pair of h'eadlsl 2O carrying a cylinder 21. lVitlnn thecylinder 2l is a torsion spring which surrounds the shaft 19 and has one end connected to said shaft whileits otherA end is jconnectedto the cylinder 21. dja` centeach end of the 4cylinder there is provided a series of soft rubber washers Q3.
In using this form of the devicea pack of cards P is tekenend proper manual manipulation the cards to be elevated from the glass arepositioned` on top of the pack; The prepared pack is then dropped in the glass with its face toward the audience and behind thepack is placedthe elevating device which hasbeen wound 'up by rotating thev cylinder 21 to tension the spring the dc-r vice being heldin this wound upposition by a trigger leverQfl pivoted to the frame and having an end 25 movable into and out the cylinder. It is to be noted that the cylinderis" preferably filled with some viscous materialv such as liquid glues) that, when the trigger is released the spring only produces slow rotation ot the cylinder 21. The device having been slipped in the glass behind-the cards, the top ycard will be pressed against by the rubber rollers 23. The trigger is now released by the operator working the same with his linger. The spring 22 re volves the cylinder and the back card will rise until it is freed from the rollers 23 open at the upper part of one side and also atthe top. 'The upper part of the box supports a fixed shaft 29 wlieieon isa cylinder 30 having a spring 3l in its interior like the spring 24. This cylinder is provided with the usual rubber rollers 32 and the` casing formed between the hollowed out card pack is provided with openings 33 wherethrough therolleis 32 project slightly. The cylinrder is provided with a lug 34 and mounted in guides 35, on the frame 28 is a trigger rod 36 which projects through one side of the casing and carries on its inner end a finger 37 movable into and out of the path of the lug 34 as the rod is slid inwardly or outwardly of the casing 24.
In using this form of the invention the selected cards are palmed in a manner well known to magicians and the false pack formed by the casing 27 is substituted for the selected. The selected cards are then placed terial with the false pack rollers 32 will act thereon. Then the false pack and selected cards are glass G and then before.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction ofrtlie invention without departing from the maspirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exactV form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such. as properly come within the scope claimed,
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. In a device ofthe kind described, a frame, a cylinder having a lug thereon and revolubly supported in said frame, card engaging means operating by the cylinder, means urging said cylinder to revolvein one the trigger manipulated as genuine pack from which the cards are in suoli position that the placed in the direction, and a releasable stop mechanism engageable with and disengageable from the lug for restraining the cylinder from movement, and releasing it from movement to of the kind described, a
' move the car.
2. In a device frame, a shaft extending transversely of and fixed in said frame, a cylinder revolubly mounted on said shaft, a torsion spring surrounding the shaft within the cylinder and having one end xedto the shaft and the other'end fixed to the cylinder, a stop lug on said cylinder, a trigger supported by the frame for movement into and out'of the path of the stop lug, said engaging rollers eoY mountedon said cylinder, and means for supporting the frame in a receptacle.
In` awdevice of the kind described, a frame, a shaft extending transversely of' and fixed in said frame, a cylinder revolubly mounted on said shaft, a torsion spring surrounding the shaft within the cylinder and having one end fixed to the shaftl and the other end fixed to the cylinder, a stop lug on said cylinder, a trigger supported by the frame for movement into and out of the path of the stop lug, said engaging roller mounted on said cylinder, a C-spring having one end hinged to the bottom of the frame and its other end provided with a ,hook-for engagement with the edge of a receptacle, and spring means at the hinged connection urging `hefree end of the frame away from the hook. y
4. In a device of the kind described, a
other end fixed to the cylinder, arstop lug on, Asaid cylinder,
a trigger supported by the frame for movement into and out of the path ed on said cylinder, a VC-spring Y. having one end hinged tothe bottom of the frameV a torsion spring sur- Y of the stoplug, said engaging roller mounti frame away from
