UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

DOLL.
Application med December 1o, me. semi no. 183,714.
tics and features of the face including the eye, ear, nose and mouth characteristics, the body of rubberemployed being of s'uch nature and strength as to normally retain the proper shape of the head even when subjected to inward pressures, or to assume shape when pressed in wardly; a still further object being to provide the c rown of the head with a recess for receiving and supporting a hair or wig pad in connection with which the natural or artificial hair is mounted; a further object being to construct the head of the doll of a rubber, preferably of a flesh tint or color, the eyes, eye-brows, mouth and cheeks being tinted to represent, as near as possible, natural appearances; a still further object being Y to provide the body portion of the doll, including the arms and legs, with an enclosingl casing or jacket of rubber, molded or otherwise formed to fit comparatively snugly upon the limbs land body of the doll, said body covering being also preferably composed of rubber of a flesh tint; a still further object being to provide a body covering of the class described including hands and feet `portions composed of solid rubber; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a doll of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, ciiicient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:-
Fig. 1 is a side view of a doll made cording to my invention. l
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the head portion of the doll; and,
Fig. 3 is a frontand sectional view of the doll seen in Fig. 1.
In practice, I provide a doll body structure which may be composed of any desired material and constructed in accordance with standard and well known methods, comprising a body portion 5 with which are movl24.. and ears 25.
ably coupled arms '6 and legs 7. The joint of the arms with the body at 8 is constructed 1n any desired manneras well as the joint of thelegs with the body at 9. The forearms 6a are also jointed at the elbows as seen .at 10, while knee joints 11 are also provided. A
At the top of `the body portion 5 is a slight upwardly projecting neck portion 12.
It will be n oted that the forearms and calves terminate 1n blunt ends 13 and 14 respectively, in other words, are not provided with the usual hands and feet, customary in the construction of dolls of conventional form. Mounted upon the body portion of the doll, including the arms and legs, is an enclosing casing or Jacket 15 preferably composed of rubber, The casing or `jacket is molded or otherwise formed to the contour of the doll body and includes arm portions 16 and leg 'portions 17. 'lhe arm portions terminate in hands 18, preferably composed of solid rubber, while the legs terminate in feet 19, also preferably composed of solid rubber. The top of the casing 15 is provided with a neck opening 20 which is sutliciently large to pei-init of the passage of the legs, arms and body therethrough when extended, the elasticity of the casing permitting of'such extension. It is also preferable that the casing or jacket 15 be composed of a rubber of a flesh tint or color, and if desired, the hands and feet may be characterized to na.- tural representation.
I also employ a head member 21 composed of rubber, and which in the construction shown is hollow and formed by molding or otherwise, the periphery of the member 21 being shaped or molded to form the characteristics of the nose 22, eyes 23, mouth The head member 21 is also preferably formed of rubber of a esh tint of color, to give a natural'representation, and the eye-brows, eyes, lips as well as cheeks may be tinted or colored to biing out, as near as possible, a natural life-like appearance.
The thickness of the wall of the head meinber 21, and the nature of the rubber emn ployed will be such as to maintain the facial features and contour, and general shape of thc head, even when subjected to inward pressure, and if idented in such pressures, the saine will return to natural position. In the construction of the head member 21, it is preferred thatthe crown portion of the head, and extending to the back Iof the head, be provided with a. recess 26 1n which .is mounted a pad or strip 27. The pad or strip 27 contains the hair 28 for the head of the doll, the hair being imbedded in and constituting part of the strip or sheet 27, and
'Y ksaid strip lmay be glued, cemented or otherwise adhered to the head member 21 as will be apparent.
The head member 21 extends downwardly in a neck portion29 which terminates 1n a chest and shoulder portion 30 which lits upon the body portion 5of the doll and around the extended neck 12 thereof. The lower edges 31 of the head member 21 or the portion 30 thereof are tapered and overlap the upper edge of the covering or casing 15 around the neck opening 20 to form a neat and finished appearance. 'lhe head member 21 may be secured to the body of the doll 1n any desired manner, for example, by gluing or cementing the head 21.
With my improved doll construction, 1t will be apparent that a doll of substantiall natural appearance will be produced, as we l as one which may be kept clean and sanitary at all times. It will also be apparent that the several joints ofthe limbs of the doll are covered, and thus present a better and more natural appearance than jointed dolls as heretofore constructed, and the hands and feet will present a soft and natural effect rather th'an the stili', hard hands and feet commonly employed. Further, by virtue of the structure of the entire doll, the same becomes literally non-breakable, it being understood that the casing or covering 15 may be composed of comparatively heavy rubber, and the body, including the arms and legs may be of a non-breakable material.
It will also lbe understood that while I have shown and described certain details of construction for carrying my invention into or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A doll comprising a body portion including arms and legs, and a easingA or posed of elastic material and adapted to be mounted upon said body, said casing or jacket-including arm and leg portlons, and hands and feet integral with said: caslng.
3. A doll comprising a body portion including arms and legs, and a casing or jacket formed independent of said body and composed of elastic material and adapted to be mounted upon said body, `said casing or jacket including arm and leg portions, and hands and feet integral with said casing, and said hands and feet being composed of solid rubber.
4. 'llle'combination with a doll body having jointed arms and legs, of a casing enclosing said body and the arms and legs, said casing being formed independent of said body and composed of resilient material and including solid hands and feet.
5. The combination with a doll body having jointed arms and legs, of a casing enclosing said body and the arms and legs, said casing being formed independent of said body and composed of resillent material and including solid hands and feet, and a hollow head formed independent of the casing and characterized to represent natural features, said head being composed of resilient material and adapted to be mounted on and secured to the body of the doll.
6. The combination with a doll body having jointed arms and legs, of a casing enclosing said body and the arms and legs, said casing being formed independent of said body and composed of resilient material and including solid hands and feet, and a hollow head formed independent of the casingand characterized to represent natural features, said head being composed of resilient material and adapted to be mounted on and secured to the body of the doll, and a wig pad lmbedded in and secured to the crown of said head.
yIn testimony that I claim the foregoing asV THOMAS J. BYRNE.
