DOLL.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 30. 1917.

JENNIE L. ALLEN, 0F LUNG BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
DOLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1%18.
Application filed January so, 1917. Serial No. 148,904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat l, JnNnin L. ALLEN, a-
citizen of the United Eitates, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and Stateof California, have invented new and useful improvements in Dolls, of which be following is a specification.
My invention relates tocharacter dolls and the primary object is to provide a doll havin a substantiall' elastic bod C0111,
pos d of a trunk, legs, arms and head, all of which members are designed to be made and stulied separately and thereafter stitched together. The general. characteristics oi my doll are somewhat similar to the ordinary type of rag or cloth dolls, but all or the members in my doll are form and figure of the doll will be more permanent and lasting because of the fact that in the ordinary rag dolls a single pat-. tern is usually provided for the entire figure and the stufling within the cloth usually continuous from one extremity to the other. Y I
It is, therefore, a further object of this invention to provide a doll in which the stuffing of the several members of the body may be separated so that by constant use and handling the same may not be displaced from the members, thus distorting the figure.
A further object of this invention is to provide a body having a covering of preferably knit material which will provide ample flexibility and elasticity so that the figure may be slightly contracted or extended for changing the form and also to permit the ready bending of the arms and legs with out distorting the lines of the figure and for retaining a more human like form than would otherwise be possible.
A further object is to provide a doll having the features and the hair embroidered on the head in different colors forproviding desired expressions. Other objects may appear in the following description.
Referring to'the lrawin s, Figure 1 is a front view and Fig. 2 is a side view of my improved doll showing the body erect. Fig. 3 is a side View showing the body in a sitting posture with the legs extended horizontally.
In the consideration of this invention it should be understood that the method of cutting and stitching the members together is as much a part of my invention as the completed doll, for he manner of attachmade separately the general.
body is.
ing the various members or the body. together as shown is essential to the accomplishmentoi theobjects set forth.
ihe trunk 1 15 formed of a single piece of knit material, which in original form, is substantially rectangular in shape and is sewed together on the side, as shown in Fig. 2, after it has been firmly stufied in a manner similar tothat or a pillow and there is no opening left in the body tirough which I the stuiiing may protrude orwork out. The
he 2 is similarly formed, except that it is (u cl substantially spherical in its original form and the stuiiing therein is entirely inclosed within the covering. ilie neck portion of the head is stitched at 3 to the upper portion of the trunk 1. The mouth t, the nose 5, the eyes 6, the eyebrows 7 and the hair 8 are embroidered on the head as shown, in suitable colors and the pupils of the eyes may be embroidered at different positions for changing the expression.
The arms 9 are integrally made and stuffed and stitched entirely around their ends to the upper side portions of the trunk at 10. The lower ends of the arms are reduced to form the hands 11 andthepieces from which the arms are made are cut at 12 on one side and then stitched together after the striding is inserted. On the rear side of the arms a out similar to that 12 on the front may extend from one end to the other. The manner in which the patterns for the arms are cut give form to the arms and by means of the cut 12 therein the lower ends of the material which covers the arms may be drawn together so as to provide a suitable form therefor. The legs 13 are also formed of a single piece 01" material with cuts 1% at the back extending from the heels 15 to the waist line 16 and a shorter cut 17 is provided in the front which serves the same purpose as the cuts 12 in the arms.
The edges 01" the material at the cuts 14 and 17 are stitched together in a manner similar to that of the arms and by means of this stitching the material may be drawn mit line 16 and substantially above the abdominal portion 520 of the'trunk' 1, so that when the legs are extendedhorizontally as shown 3 i Fig. 3, a more human like form Will be provided.
It will be understood tnat were for dolls having bodies of cloth and having the ieatures embroidered thereon but I am not aware that anyone has heretofore known or used dolls embodying the improvements set forth in the tore oin soecification and the legs 13 attached to the trunk l at but a I desire to claim broadly thereon;
single, point, as in the case of the ordinary cloth dolls, such a form as shown'in' Fi 3 would be impossible. C
inasmuch as all of the members are made and stitched separately'and the stuliing in each of the members when attached together is separated it will be impossible for the form o t-any of the members to become distorted from use. On the other hand the .stuffing, which is preferably of cotton, be-
of the elastic quality of the knit materialfrom which the limbs and body are made and this mater1al 1s essentlal tor the ac V complishment of the objects set forth, for
V tain any desired form.
it is obvious that were cloth, such as muslin or linen or other close woven material used for inclosing the stufiing, it'would not generally be possible to bend the limbs in such a manner. When the proper quality of knit material is used the limbs will usually re- The manipulation of the stufling in the several members of the body will permit the changing of the positions and form of the members for difleren postures.
I am aware that patents have been issued ,bers having an Having thus described my invention what I claim is V 1. A character doll having separately stuti ed and inclosed head, trunk and limb members, facial features, and the leginemupwardly and rearwardly extending curve terminating in a horizontal shoulder portion, as set forth. 7 w
2. A character doll having separately stuffed and inclosed head, trunk and limb members, the abdominal portion of said trunk member being extended beyond the rear portion thereof forming recess, and
' the leg members being extended into and attached to said trunk member at said recess.
formed trunk, head, arm and leg'members stitched together, said leg members having upwardly extending portions at the 'rear for attachment to said trunk portion at points above the points of attachment of the front portions thereof. 1
