E; H. BIXBY EXTENSION GRIP FOR ELECTRIC LAMP GONNECTERS Filed May 1, 1926 Patented May 1, 1928.
nvnnnrm nARLow IBIXBY, on ASTORIA, OREGON.
EXTENSION enrrron ELECTRIC-LAMP oonnnc'rnns.
Application filed May 1,
My invention relates to an extension grip for electric lamp connectors.
an extension grip'of simple and inexpensive construction, adapted to be easily and quickly clamped onto any standard electric lamp connection, and further adapted toaccommodate variations in the size of the connection.
Further to provide the extension grip with a shank of substantial length adapted to be placed over the cord ofthe electric connection, so as to provide an ample handhold and insure that when the connector is pulled out of its socket thepull will not-be applied to the cord. V
And further to provide said extension grip with finger-holds providing a means where by the extension will notturn or slip in the hand. y
And furthermore to provide an extension grip adapted to be attached to a standard electric lamp connection without changing or substituting any part of thesaid connection.
I attain my object by means of an electric connecter holder comprising a tubular longitudinally divided two part shank, the edges of the parts bearing on each other, the shank parts formed at one end with clampin head portions, said shank parts are provided with external laterally inter-locking lugs at their abutting edges, said lugs being adapted to hinge said parts one in the other, thereby to permit the spreading apartof the clamping head ends of the shank for the receiving of connecters of various sizes, said inter-locking lugs serving also to rovide finger holds and means for fastening the shank parts together, and furthermore a split bushing of resilient material is secured within the hollow of the shankfor encompassing the cord of the connecter secured in the said clamp-head portions.
The further details of construction of my. invention, and the mode of its use is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and hereinafter described:
In the drawings:
Figs. 1 and 2 show the two companion halves of which my extension grip is composed and illustrate the provision on each half of inter-locking lugs;
Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of two parts of my extension grip assembled on an electric connector and bolted together;
Fig. 4 shows a side elevation similar to that shown by Fig. 3 and the parts cut away being 1926. Serial No. 106,632.
to show the means provided for grip ing the connectergthe view seen in Fig. 4 eing at The b]ect of my invention 1s to provide right angles to that seen in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 shows an electric fixture and illustrates the mode in which my invention is used in practice;
Fig. 6 shows the means employed, namely a protective splitbushing, for the electric cord of the electric connecter.
My invention is stamped out of metal, and consists of twoparts a and 6 preferably with flared ends 70, and exactly alike except for the lugs 0 with the seating cavities on one and the lateral arms at on theother which when assembled lock one in the other.
The clamping-head e is composed of the parts a and b, and are flared so astoform a bell-shaped opening with a convex rim necter as g. The bolt h in the holes h is provided to hold the two parts together and the shanks a and b form the tubularlike'handle 2' through which the electric cord f adapted to hold any standard electric conj extends is spread at the end is so as to 30 provide a degree of adjustment to the. size of the connecter. As the strain from the bolt h is centered on the inter-locked lugs it serves tolock them in place. A resilient split-bushing I (Fig. 6) that may be slipped in place over the cord is provided as a guard agalnst wear on the insulation and as a grip to hold the cord against a sudden pull or jerk.
My invention is useful in many ways as for instance when attaching the connecter inside a lamp shade n, as in Fig. 5 which also shows how the lugs c and d serve as finger holds as at m. It may be used as a handle for an extension light, and it may be at- 05 tached on any connecter without removing the cord, it being only necessary to assemble the extension grlp around the connecter and cord and bolt it in place.
I claim: 7
1. An electric-connecter grip comprising, a tubular longitudinally divided two-part shank, the edges of the parts bearing on each other, the shank parts formed at one end with clamping-head portions and provided at the other end with external means for locking the shank-parts together, said means being adapted to hinge said parts one on the other, the latter ends of the shank parts curved outwardly towards the extremities to increase the degree of the said spreadingapart, saidinterlocking lugs serving also to provide finger-holds, and means for fastening the shank parts together.
2. An electric-connecter grip comprising a tubular longitudinally divided two-part shank, the edges of the parts bearing on each other, the shank parts formed at one end with clamping-head portions, and provided at the other end with external laterally interlocking lugs at their abutting edges, said lugs being adapted to hinge said parts one on the other thereby to permit the spreading apart the clamping-head cndso'l' the shank for receiving connecters o'tvarious sizes, and means for fastening the shank parts together.
3. An electric-connecter grip comprising, a tubular longitudinally divided two-part shank, the edges of the parts bearing on each other, the shank parts formed at one end with clamping-head portions and rovided at the other end with external latera ly interlocking lugs at their abutting edges, the lugs of one of said parts provided with seating cavities and the'lugs of the other part consisting of lateral arms seated in said cavities,
and means for fastening the shank parts together.
4. An electric-oonnecter grip compr1s1ng a tubular longitudinally divided two-part shank, the edges of the parts bearingon each other, the shank parts formed at one end with clamping-head portions and provided at the other end with external laterally interlocking lu s at their abutting edges, said lugs being a apted to hinge said parts one on the other thereby to permit the spreading apart the clamping-head ends of the shank for receivin connecters of various sizes, the latter of the shank parts being curved outwardly towards the extremities to increase the degree of the said spreading apart, and means for fastening the shank parts together.
5. An electric connecter-grip comprising ing interlocking lugs holding the parts tosubstantial distance be 0nd the circum ence of the shank, there y to adapt said lugs to serve as finger holds, and means for fastening the shank parts together.
