woon SPLITTER.
This invention relates to a wood splitter and particularly to a splitter of a rotary type.
The main object is to provide a simple construction wherein the splitting blade is securely mounted on a rotary wheel, so that the blade can be rotated at a high speed and a means for positioning a block of wood in the path of rotation of said blade.
A further object is to' provide a tilting block on which the block of wood can be placed and the tilting block tilted to position the block of wood in the path of rotation, so that the splitting blade will split the same.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent ensuing a perusal of the following specification read in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side plan view of the preferred embodiment of my construction.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, part broken away, showing a modified form of my in vention.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the modified form as shown in Fig. '3.
Fig. 5 shows av modified form of the block holding arms.
Like n'umeralsof reference designate corresponding parts throughout the different views.
6- indicates a frame having outwardly extended handles 7 at its opposite ends, which frame is mounted on suitable legs 8 and provided with brace bars 9.
Centrally of the longitudinal members of the frame 6, are bearings 10 in which a shaft 11 is mounted. 12 is a wheel and 14: is a.
drive pulley mounted on shaft 11. The wheel. 12 is provided with any desired type of friction clutch so that if the cutting blade, hereinafter mentioned, should strike a hard knot, the wheel would cease to revolve and thus prevent the machine from breaking or throwing off the belt. This friction clutch would be tightened the desired tension. 15 is a suitable belt for rotating the drive pulley 14 from any suitable source of power. The wheel 12 rotates in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. Detachably mounted to the rim of this wheel 12 is a cutting blade 16, secured thereto preferably P by bolts and nuts as indicated at 17. On the opposite side of the wheel 12 is a counterwhich the cutting blade 16 is passing, as
shown in Fig. 1. Itwill be appreciated that the wheel 12 will be rotated at a reasonably high speed, such that it will quickly split through the block of wood, when placed in position on the splitting block 19.
Referring to Figs. 3, 5i and 5, I show a modified form in which the block 19 is tiltably mounted on the frame 6. The block 19 is provided with a handle 21, so that it can be tilted back and forwardto the dotted position as illustrated in Fig. 3.. The bands 22 and 23 secured to the legs 8 limit the tilting motion of this block. On the upper end of the block, I provide suitable upright supports 24, which may be made from strip material or may be provided with outwardly extended arms 25. By using the tilted block, the block of wood 20 may be positioned on one end, so that in this way, the cutting blade 16 will split longitudinally of the block and in many cases provide more efficient operation. It will be noted in Fig. 3, that the position of the tiltedtblock 19 is such that the inner corner is spaced from the wheel 12 suflicient distance to allow the cut ting blade 16 to pass therebetween.
The foregoing, specification and annexed drawings discloses the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is to be understood that minor changes may be resorted to in the commercial adaptation of my invention without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinbefore claimed.
What I claim as new is:
In combination with a wood splitting device, comprising a rotatably mounted splitter supported in a frame, of a splitting block tiltably supported in said frame; holder arms supported on said block so as to be moved to an inclined position towards said splitter by said block, that wood blocks positioned in said arms may be moved into the ath of travel of said splitter.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
