LE ROY E. DAI-ILEEN, OF YANKTON, SOUTH DAKOTA.
POWER POTATO-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgflmgnt qgfl fiept zit, 1191?,
1 Application filed February 24, 1916. Serial No. 80,284.
Be it known that 1, Lu ROY E. Dan:- LEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yankton, in the county of Yankton and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power Potato-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in power potato cutters, and has for its primary object, the provision of a device of this character which may be readily operated to cut potatoes for planting.
The invention has for another object the provision of a device of this character in which is included a rotary knife carrying member and a second rotary member for cooperation with the same and provided with grooves in its periphery to correspond with the blades of the cutting member.
The invention has for another object the provision of a potato cutter which is composed of the minimum number of parts, is highly efiicient in use, and in which the cut ting blades interlock at the points at which they cross one another to bring the cutting edges of the various blades in the same plane, where they may all cooperate to properly cut the potatoes pressed against the same by the rotary grooved member.
The invention has for a further object, the provision of a potato cutting device of this character provided with means for resiliently retaining the rotary grooved member in operative position and also means for forcing out of the rotary cutting member all sections of the potato caught in the same during the cutting operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construc tion, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device with parts broken away;
Fig. 2 is a top plan vlew w1th parts broken away;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsection of a portion of the device with the supporting frame shown in elevation; and
Fig. 4c is a detail plan of a portion of the rotary cutting member to show clearly the arrangement of the blades.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the supporting frame which is mounted upon suitable legs 2 braced by the brace bars 3 connected therewith and with the frame 1.
Mounted centrally upon the supporting frame 1 is a stationary central shaft 4; pref erably squared in cross section, and having its oppositeends resting in suitable bearings 5 carried by the longitudinal members of the supporting frame 1.
The shaft 4 serves to support the rotary cutting member v6 which includes parallel spacing disks or wheels connected by the cutting blades 7. The cutting blades 7 are extended parallel with the shaft 4: and also diagonally across the same and suitably interlocked at their crossing points or points of intersection by means of transverse notches in the opposite faces of the blades, as will be apparent from the drawings, or in any other suitable manner. The opposite ends of the blades 7 are bent at an angle and secured, as shown at 8, to the inner faces of the parallel disks or wheels along the edges of the same. The rotary cutting member also includes a large gear wheel 9 adapted to be driven by a smaller gear wheel 10 rigidly mounted upon the drive shaft 11, which latter may have a belt wheel 12 upon one end or a handle or any other suitable means by which the shaft 11 may be rotated.
A supporting bracket 13 is mounted centrally upon the shaft t between the disks or wheels of the rotary cutting members 6 and provided with a free bifurcated end to form bearing arms 14 for the releasing roller 15 which is provided with radially directed potato ejecting fingers 16 adapted for engagement through the pockets formed between the cutting knives 7 for the purpose of ejecting sections of the potatoes caught between the knives, the roller 15 rotating freely within the rotary cutting member 6.
I have also provided a pair of bracket arms 17, which are pivoted to the sides of the supporting frame 1 and serve to support in their upper ends a shaft 18 for the peripherally grooved roller 19, the grooves 20 of which roller correspond to the cutting knives 7. The tension springs 21 are positioned upon opposite sides of the supporting frame 1 and connected with the same and with the bracket arms 17 to draw the roller 19 toward the rotary cutting member 6 and a hopper 22 is mounted upon suitable sup porting standards 23 to deliver potatoes to the rotary cutting member 6, the roller 19 serving to press the potatoes into engagement with the knives 7 and rotate freely as the potatoes pass between said roller 19 and the rotary cutting member 6. It will be understood that the ejecting roller 15 is positioned in a plane below the roller 19, as shown in Fig. 1, and all sections of potatoes ejected by the fingers 16 of the roller 15 will drop into the spout 24; and be delivered by the latter to a suitable receptacle 25 positioned beneath the lower v end of the latter. The spout 24: is suspended in proper position by suitable straps 26 secured to and depending from one end of the supporting frame 1, said straps 26 being securedto the sides of the spout 2% at the lower end of the latter.
\Vhile the preferred embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages of the same.
What is claimed is:
1. In a cutting machine, a rotary cylindrical supported cutter, a hopper disposed above the cutter, a roller for forcing the contents of the hopper into engagement with the rotary cutter, and arotatable member having fingers thereon adapted to be engaged with the particles that have been cut and carry them outwardly away from the cutter.
2. In a cutting machine, a support, a rotatable cylindrical cutter mounted thereon, a hopper also mounted on the support and above the cutter,'a roller also positioned on the support and below the outlet of the hopper and adapted to force the contents of the per extremitiesof the armsand below the mouth of the hopper, resilient means connected with the arms and urging the roller toward the rotary cutter, and means for ejecting the particles that have been cut from the cutter.
4. In a cutting machine, a support, a shaft mounted on the support, rotary members mounted on the shaft, cutting knives con nected with the rotary members, the members having bearing arms formed upon one I end thereof and its other end formed with a sleeve, which sleeve being loosely mounted upon the shaft, a rotatably mounted cylinder mounted in the bearing arms, a plurality of fingers extending radially from the cylinder adapted to engage the particles that have been cut to eject the same away from the cutting knives, and means forforcing the particles against the cutting knives.
In testimony whereof I aflix mys'ignature in presence of two Witnesses.
