UNITED STATES. PATENT orrresi- JESSE W. SPEER, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOB TO NOVO ENGINE COMPANY, OF-
' LANSXNG, MICHIGAN.
LAMP PO31 Application: filed February 23, 1926. Serial No. 90,050.
This invention: relates to an improved hollow cast metal lamp post structure.
The object of the invention is to provide such a hollow cast metal structure with a suitable base door or cover with effective locking means.
Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation of my invention will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a' part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a hollow cast metal lamp post embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional elevational view on line 22 of Fig. 1, through my im roved door or closure structure and the loc ing means therefor, the opening and closing thereof being shown by dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail inside elevational view of the lock.
Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail cross sectional View on line H of Figs. 1 and 2 showing the relation of the upper locating and looking lug.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail transverse sectional View on line 5-5 of Figs. 1, 2 and 3, showing the relation of the door or cover and lock and the structure of various parts.
The parts will be identified by their numerals of reference which identify like parts in all the views.
1 is the hollow lamp post of circular cross section with hollow base 2 containing the broad bot-tom aperture 3. The base is formed with a side door opening to make accessible the connections and switches for either electricity or gas.
4 is the cover or door which is a segment cut out of the base of any dimension up to one-half of the circumference, preferably about one-third as illustrated in the accompanying drawing. This cover or door has a straight horizontal upper end and a straight horizontal base with vertical sides, thus constituting a segment of the circular wall. The upper end of the door is provided with an inwardly hooking lug 41 which engages between projecting locating lugs 11, 11 inside of the hollow post 1. The
lower end of the cover or dooris beveled on its inner side at 42 to fit a corresponding bevel 12 on the bottom of the door opening. At the inside of the base of the door is an inwardly project-ing hooked lug 43 for engagement of the pivoted lock member 5 on the base.
The lock member or pivoted latch 5 is beveled at 51 and is carried on the shouldered pivot pin 6, suitablj riveted thereto at 62 as seen in Fig. 2. The pivot pin 6 is provided with a polygonal head 61, preferably having five sides. This head is located in the recess formed by the raised rib 21 on the base, so that it will not be easy to get at the head to turn it with a cold chisel or similar means, or to grasp it with a pair of pliers or any other device than a special wrench that fits the special polygonal head. The head is also protected from accidental blows that would loosen the fastenmg.
The operation of my device clearly appears from Fig. 2. The upper lug ll is in serted between the locating lugs 11, 11 and the cover door is swung to place with the beveled lower edge against the beveled seat to receive the same. The lock 5 being beveled is turned into place by the special wrench and wedges the parts very securely together. The door is practically inaccesible to anyone not having the special wrench for operating it.
I have shown the improved post with an integral base. The base of course might be made a separate part, but my device; is especially adapted to an integral base structure, and I desire to claim the same in that relation as well as broadly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A cast metal post of circular cross section with an integral hollow base, a door opening in said base with a door therefor forming a peripheral segment of the wall having a square top with inwardly and upwardly engaging hooked lug and having a bottom beveled on its inner edge, and a downwardly hooked integral bracket lug within and near the bottom of said door, a wedge-shaped pivoted locking latch for engagement with said bottom lug to wedge the door to place, a shouldered pivot extending through the base wall for said locking latch with a polygonal head, a projection forming a recess on the outside of the post embracing and protecting said head, coacting as described for the purpose specified.
2. A. cast metal post of circular cross section with an integral hollow base, a door opening in said base with a door therefor forming a peripheral segment of the wall having a square top with inwardly and upwardly engaging hooked lug and having a. bottom beveled on its inner edge and a downwardly hooked integral bracket lug within and near the bottom of said door, a Wedge-shaped pivoted locking latch for engagement with said bottom lug to wedge the 1 door, and a shouldered pivot en'ttznding through said base wall for said locking latch, coactiug as described for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set 2 my hand.
JESSE 1V. SPEER.
