Description

lMay 1, 192s. y f 1,667,735
'. T. MUNRO y Original Filed Jan. 20, 1925 vbe desired,'without departing weavers replaced thereon and again secured in prosi-Y tion by the fastening elements in the manner already described, and as the wires 24 and 25 of the elelnents are preferably of such material that they can be readily bent back and forth a number of times without break-v ing. it is thus possible to utilizethe same fastening means each time that the cover isremoved and replaced or to substitute a newcover for the old one without the necessity of employing new fastening-means.
It will of course be understood that the usev ofthe improved spring cover fastening means which I have herein disclosed and claimed is not confined to any particular form or typeof cover and I therefore do not desire or intend to in any way limit the use thereof to the particular form and cover shown and described herein, and further, that minor changes and4 modifications maybe made in the design, construction and arrangement of the said fastening means and also of the said cover to facilitate their employment on particular forms'or styles of vehicle springs or for other purposes as may from 'the spirit and scope of the invention' as'deined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A cover for springs, comprising a layer of thick fibrous material adapted to lie againstthe surface of a spring, said layer being split throughout a part of its length to form parallel sections, one section being provided wit-h. an aperturethrough which lubricant is injected into the body of said layer.
2. A cover for springs, comprising a layer of felt, said layer being bifurcated to provide separable parallel sections, one section being provided with an aperture through which lubricant is injected into the body of the layer.
3. A cover for springs, comprising a layer of felt split to provide parallel sections throughout a portlon of its longitudinal extent, an aperture in one section through which lubricant may be injected into the body of the layer, and an annular member providing a reservoir and positioned withinsaid aperture so as to prevent the collapse of the apertured section.
A. A cover-for springs, comprising a layer style ofv of felt split to provide se arable sections throughout a portion of its ongitudinal extent, an aperture in one sectionan annular porous ring providinga lubricant reservoir and positionedwithin said aperture so as to prevent the collapse of the apertured section of said layer, a cover around said layer and having extensions laterally thereof, said extensions being adapted to encircle the-sides of a spring, means extending between the opposite free edges of said extensions to re-. l
movably secure said cover upon the springs, and an aperture 1n sald cover whereby lubricant may be injected into said reservoir and into the body of the felt layer.
5. In a spring cover, the combination'of a member adapted to surround a spring and having spaced pairs of eyelets .in its opposed marginal edge portions, and means extending through opposed eyelets to removably secure the cover to the spring and; to permit a yielding separation between said edge portions in conformity with the movements of the spring, said meanscomprising a pair of members each having a' laterally extending cyelet through which the other member extends, and a coiled compression sprin surrounding the overlapping portions o said spective eyelets.
6. In combination with a. s ring cover adapted to surround a s ring an presentin adjacent the bottom o the spring #oppose edge portions having aligned eyelets, `at tachmg means comprising a pair of members the opposite ends of whichy extend through said eyelets, the central Yportions of said members paralleling each other and each member having-its inner end loo ed to form an eyelet through which the ot er member slidably extends, and a compression coil sprlng surrounding the parallel portions of said members and compressible between their cle spring, expansible means comprising relatively slidable parallel wires connecting the.
opposite edges of ythe cover beneath the spring and operative to permit the cover to conform to the movements of the spring when the spring leaves slide one upon/another.
8. In combination with a spring'- cover comprising a flexible member adapted to surround the upper and side surfaces of a vehicle spring, means to stifen 'and reinforce the longitudinal edges of the side .portions of the cover,- and expansible means connecting said reinforced edges beneath the `spring and comprising relativel slidable wires and a coil spring disposed thereabout, said means being adapted to maintain the cover snugly against/t e vehicle spring irmembers and compressed between their rea pair of Wires' ispsed in parallel relation and overlapping each other for a portionof their respective lengths, one end of each wire being bent around the adjacent wire to slidably engage the latter, and a coil spring positioned about both wires between said bent over portions.
10. Means for operatively' securing the free edge-s of a spring cover together'so as to permit relative movement therebetween under operative conditions,'said means cornprising a pair of wires disposed in parallel relation and overlapping each other for a portion 'of their respective lengths, the inner end of each wire being bent in'a loop about the other wire and adapted to slide thereon,
anda coil spring surrounding the overlapping portions of both wires and compressicle spring, means for connecting the oppol site edges of the cover and comprising a pair of relatively movable interconnected elements respectively engaging the side edges of the cover and extending beneath the spring. 12. In combination with a cover adapted to surround the upper and side surfaces of a vehicle spring, means connecting the opposite edges of the cover and comprising a pair ot"4 relatively movable interconnected elements respectively engaging the side edges of the cover and extending transversely beneath the spring.
In testimony whereof I have .aixed my signature.
