Withdrawal To hold theeraser against movement transversely or; longitudh nally of the cover, the side members of the cover are of such dimensions or so spaced that they will accommodate the eraser between them but will: prevent any excessive movement; laterally of the .craser which would permit it to shift to one side of the scraper. Extending between the side mem bers of the cover is a bar or stationary clamping member 22 against which one end of the eraser may abut, as shown in Fig. l, and in the lower edge of thisclamping member is a notch 23 to facilitate the insertion or removal of the eraser. The opposite end of the eraser is engaged by a movable clamping jaw 24L fixed upon the end of a rod 25 which extends therefrom toward the adjacent end of the cover and is slidably mounted in the inner end wall of a chamber'or case 26, the outer end of said rod being equipped with a piston 27 within said chamber and an expansion spring 28 being housed within the chamber between the piston and the outer end wall of the cover, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, so that the force of the spring is exerted Constantly to project the abument or clamping jaw 22lagainst the eraser and thereby hold the eraser against the stationary clamping member 22.
The use of the device will, it is thought, be clear from the foregoing descriptiointaken in connection with the accompanying drawing. When an eraser is 'to be cleaned, the lid or cover of the box is swung over to open position and the eraser is then inserted between the clamping members 22 and 24: by pressing one end of the eraser against the movable clamping jaw 24 and then pushing the eraser between the two clamping elements. The spring 28 will then hold the eraser firmly between the clamping elements as previously described. The cover is then returned to closed position and pressure is exerted downwardly upon the plunger rod 19 so that the eraser will be pressed against the scraper, and the scraper is reciproc ated by manipulation of the handle 11 and rod 10 in an obvious manner. The upper projecting edges of the several scraper slats 9 will have a beating action upon the surface of the eraser so that the dust collected therein will be loosened and will fall through the spaces between the slats into the drawer or tray 12. The operation of the device for a very short period of time will thoroughly clean the eraser and after one eraser has been cleaned it is removed and another eraser inserted, the operation being repeated until all of the erasers on hand have been cleaned. Vvhile ordinarily the device will be made to accommodatea single eraser, it will be obvious that it may be made in such dimensions as'to accommodate two or more crasers at one time and, of course, may be made in various dimensions according to the sizes of the erasers which are in use.
The device is very compact and is free of complicated arrangements or constructions so that it may be easily manipulated and will not be apt to get out of order. p p I -Having thus described the invention, we claim 1. An apparatus for the purpose set forth con'iprising a container constructed to admit an eraser, means for mounting an eraser within the container, a reciprocablc scraper titted within the container to act upon an eraser mounted therein, means for closing the container around the eraser, and means for pressing the eraser against the scraper.
2. An apparatus for the purpose setforth comprising a container, means for releasably supporting an eraser therein, a scraper mounted 'slidably within the container in position to act upon the eraser andhaving dis charge openings through its bottom whereby dust from the eraser may pass freely therethrough, means whereby an eraser may be a u held against the scraper, means for closing the container around the eraser and the scrap-er, and a dust collector removably fit ted'in the container below the'scraper.
3. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising a container, means for mounting an eraser within the container, a reciprocatory scraper mounted within the container below the eraser and comprising an open frame and transverse slats secured in said frame in spaced relation with their upper edges projecting aboveythe frame to impinge upon the eraser, means for closing the container around the eraser and the scraper, and means whereby the eraser may beheld o the scraper.
4. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising a container, a scraper slidably 'mounted in'the container, a handle element secured to one end of the scraper and projecting through the adjacent end of the container, yielding means for supporting an eraser over the scraper, means for closing the container around the scraper and the eraser, and means whereby an eraser may be held to the scraper.
5. apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising a container, a reciprocatory scraper mounted therein, a fixed clamping element within the container above the scraper against which an eraser may abut, a movable clamping jaw cooperating with said fixed clamping member to hold an eraser, means for yieldably projecting the movable clamping jaw toward the fixed clamping element, means for closing the container around the eraser and the scraper, and means between the clampingjaw and fixed clamping element to hold an eraser against the scraper.
6. An apparatus for the purpose set forth comprising a container, a reciprocatory scraper mounted in the container, means above the scraper for supporting an eraser,
plunger rod secured to the plunger and ex tending therefrom through the top of the container whereby pressure may be applied to hold the eraSe-r to the scraper, and yieldablemeans acting on the plunger rod to normally retract the same.
