UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
OLIVER n. vAnJ, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 166,733, dated August 17, 1875; application filed June 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER E. VAIL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Rocking-Chair; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention is in the .nature of an improvement in folding rocking-chairs; and the invention consists in a folding rocking-chair, constructed with a seat pivoted at both ends, and with guide-rods and metallic slotted guideplates affixed thereto, substantially in the manner as hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional view of the chair opened, taken in line as w,Fig. 3; Fig. 2, a side view of the chair folded, and Fig. 3 a plan view of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
A represents one of the supports or legs of a folding rocking-chair, to the front end of which is secured, in any suitable manner, a metallic guiderod, a. Secured to the upper ends of the legs A by a pivotal joint, I), is a seat, B, the rear end of this seat being also secured by a pivot to the back post 0, and affixed to the inner side of the back post 0 is a guide-pin, d.
The chair constructed as above has the rockers D attached to it by a hinge or pivotal joint, 6, which secures the lower end of the posts 0, forming one of the legs or supports, and held in position to the lower end of the support A by a slotted metallic plate, E, fastened at the inner side of the rocker D, into which works a pin, f.
My chair being constructed substantially as above described, it is operatedby simply raising the seat B, when the support A will be drawn upward, and be guided in its motion by the pin cl working between the guide-rod a and the front edge of said support, and the rear end of the rocker, secured to the chair in the manner before described, is drawn upward by the same motion, its action being governed by the slotted plate E, through which passes the guide-pin f on the lower end of the support A, the hinge joint 0 permitting the rocker to be thus drawn upward, the chair assuming in its folded condition the position shown in Fig.2. In the open position the chair is as shown in Fig. l, which position it assumes by folding the seat B downward, the several parts working as before described, but in a reverse manner.
From the foregoing it is evident that a folding rocking-chair constructed as hereinbefore described may be cheaply and strongly made, and at the same time worked with facility under all conditions. a
I am aware that it is not new to connect the front legs and rockers of a folding rockingchair by hinged joints, and to provide the legs and rockers of such chairs with slots, grooves, or metallic rods or guideways in which pins work, in such manner that the chair may be folded up when desired. I disclaim this as being original with me; and
\Vhat do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A folding rocking-chair, constructed with a seat, B, pivoted to the front and rear legs, guide-rods a, and pins cl and f, in combination with rockers l), slotted plates E, and hinges 6, arranged and operating as shown and described.
