, W. H, BUCKINGHAM GUARD FOR HAND STRAPS Filed March 12 1927 Patented Apr. 24,1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BUCKINGHAM, OF MAYFIELD, FENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HAI1F TO SAMUEL SALZBURG, OF MAYFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
GUARD FOR HAND STRAPS,
Application filed March 12, 1927. Serial No. 174,985.
This invention relates to guards for hand straps and it is an object of the invention to provide a guard of this kind to effectively protect the strap'at its places of connection or attachment.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and an rangement of the several parts of my improved guard for a hand strap whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more. convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. a
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l'is a view in top plan illustrating a hand strap and an associated container, said strap havingapplied thereto guards constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of an end portion of the hand strap and applied guard inverted; f
Figure .t is a view in perspectiveof one of the guards herein disclosed unapplied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, C denotes a container of any desired character which has applied thereto the spaced loops L with which are operatively engaged in awell known manner the extremities of a hand strap S generally of leather.
This strap S at each end portion is transversely enlarged to provide a cross head 1 affording the shoulders 2 which contact as is well known from without with an adja cent loop L. I
Engaged with each end portion of the strap S is a guard G constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, said guard comprising a plate 3 overlying an end portion of said strap and of a length to extend through an adjacent loop L. The outer portion of theplate 3 is transversely enlarged, as at 4: to overlie the cross head 1 and said enlarged portion 4- has its inner margins at opposite sides of the plate 8 propor provided with the outstanding, flanges 5. The enlarged portion at at its outer margin and midway between the flanges 5 is also provided with the additional flange 6.
After the guard G has been properly applied to an end portion of the strap S, the extremities of the flanges 5 and 6 are bended to underlie the adjacent marginal portions of the head 1 as is particularly illustrated in Figure 3, whereby the guard G is effective ly maintained in applied or working position.
lVith the use of guards constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the extremities of the hand strap S, which is generally made of leather or leather substitute, are effectively protected against undue wear by contact with the loops L and more especially against cutting.
Each of the guards G is made from pliable sheet metal such as zinc or aluminium. From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a gLu-Lrd for a hand strap constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles'and spirit thereof and forthis reason. Ido not wish to be understood as limitingmyself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
In combination with a hand strap provided with a cross head at each end, a guard for each end portion of such strap comprising a plate disposed over a portion of a face of the strap and the head, the marginal. portions of the plate being provided with flanges clinching the marginal portions ofthe strap.
In testimony whereof I hereunto my slgnature.
WILLIAM H/BUCKINGHAM.
