M. E. RAMSEY MORTUARY BED tively Patented Apr. 24, 19218.
ururno fsTA MAXWILLI..l RAMSEYLOF ST. LOUISyMISSOURI.
fmon'runnr BED.
Application sled February 12, 1927. serial no. 167,646.
This invention relates to mortuary beds. An object of the invention'is to provide an improved mortuary bedhaving foldable end supporting frames comprising detachable sections, whereby parts of said end frames above the bed frame may be detached. Another object of the invention is toprovide an improved mortuary bed comprising end frames and means for extendinfrsaid frames to different vertical lengths, whereby the bed may be raised or lowered as desii-ed. l j
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the drawing, in which N Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved mortuary bed.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the upper portion of the end frame detached.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view showing the construction of the end frames whereby the vertical length thereof may be extended or reduced, as desired.
Fig. l is a cross sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
The improved bed frame end section 1 for the head of the bed, and a bed frame end section 2 for the foot of the bed. j j
A transverse pivotrod Sbelow the'bed frame is connected to each side of the frame section 1 by a short link 4 and a long link and is connected at each side to the foot section 2 by a short link 6 and a long link 7. This construction permits one of the bed frame sections to be folded under the other, ror in a relationship in which the two frame sections 1 and 2 are spaced apart a distance approximately equal to the combined length of the/links L.tand 6 at each side ofthe bed.
A pair of hollowvsupports 8 are pivotally connected to the outer ends of the bed frameV sections 1 and 2' respectively. The pivotal connection for each of said uprights 8 comprises a relatively short link 9 and arela long link 10, the ends of which links are pivotally connected to the uprights 8 and to depending plates 11 in rigid connection with the sides of the frames 1 and 2 respectively. This permits theuprights to be folded under the respective bed sectionsy 1 and '2 with which they are pivotally connected, or to be moved to position to support the bed as-shown. The parts are of such dimensions that the uprights 8 can be embed as shown comprises a the uprights 8 braced between the two sections l and 2 j `or reduce the vertical length ofthe `end frames of which the uprights 8 form apart.
when the latter are folded one under thef I i foo To each ofthe nprights 8 a latch lever 16 j is pivoted, eacli of said latch levers having on its lower end an angular extension 17 extending under the lower end of the corresponding upright 8 and designed and ada ted to engage in holes 18 in the extension ed) ments 15 yto hold the latter in their different adjustments inthe uprights 8, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 3@
A rod 19 extends rigidly beyond each of through a hole in the upper end of each latch lever 16 (Fig. 4,). A coil spring 20 encircles each of the yrods 18, the pair of said springs being exerted to press the upper ends of the latchlevers -16 awa from the uprifrhts 8 and to holdsaid latcli levers in late iing `engagement with the parts 15.
My invention comprises means for simultaneously releasing the two latch levers 16 at each end of the bed. As showna pair of levers 21 are pivotally connected at 22 near their inner ends and have angular `portions 23 at their ends,`through which the rods l19 extend. These angular extensions vare againstl the inner side of the levers 16. By pushing Y down the pivoted ends of thev levers 21, the
upper ends of the latch levers 16 are pushed outwardly toward the sides of the support-v ing frames in opposition tothe springs 20 a sufficient distance to release the hooks 17 from engagement with the elements 15. This will permit'theelements 15 to be moved to desired adjustments to obtain `the desired vertical length of the end supporting frames of whichthe elements 15 form a part.
The lower ends of the elements lhave castor'rollers or wheels 24 swiveled thereto. Break elements 25 for said rollers are kpivoted to the brackets 26 of the castor rollers plii'ied inann er.
and are engagea'ble with and releasable from the castor rollers to prevent said rollers frein turning or to perinit thei'n to run along the floor or support upon which the bed is mounted, as desired.
Frein the Ytoregoingg, it will he seen that L'iny iinprored niortuary bed possesses numerons advantages and obtains all oit its objects and purposes in an e'l'licient and siin rl'lhe construction and ai'- rangeinei'it of the parts may he varied Within equivalent liinits Without departure troni the nature and principle of the invention. I do Anot restrict 'myself in unessential particulars, but what lf claiin and desire to secure by letters Patent is:M
l. A hed comprising an approximately horizontal traine, a paiiI of uprights supporting each. end of said 'iii-aine, an element telescoping in the lower end of each ot said uprigl'its, latchesI pivoted on said nprights for holding said elements in dillerent adjustinents, a rod extending inwardlyV4 troni eachv of said 'u prights adjacent to said latches,
- springs for actuating said latches into latching engagement with said elements, and a pair olf levers having` their outer ends snppoi'ted by said rods and engaging said latches and having` their inner ends pivotally Connected and h'eing operatireto release said levers from said eleinents.
2. A hed omprising an approximately horizontal Ytraine, a pair ot npriglits supporting` each end oit said traine, `an element teleseoping in the lower end of each of said uprights, a l rod extending inwardly troni each oi said upriglits, latches pivoted to said uprights :tor holding `said .elements in diiierent adjustn'ients and extending adjacent to iL-'aid (rods, springs on said rods between said '\\'ardly to release said latches from said eleinents. l
3. A hed comprising an approxiinatelyr horizontal iii-aine, a pair of nprights supporting each end ot said frame, an elenient teleseoping in the Vlower end oil eaclil of said n prights, a rody extending inwardly troni each ot' said upriglits, latches piroted to saidnprights .between said rods and thel lower ends ots-aid uprights and having their lower ends arranged to engage With said elements and 'their upper ends adjacent tov said rods, springs on said rods between said uprights and said latches oirholdingsaid latches in engageinentwith said elements,r
and a pair of levers having their outer ends slidahlt7 supported onl said rods andl their inner ends pivotally vconnected and being operatixf'e to force thevnpper ends ot said latches toward said nprights torelease saidv latches from said elements.
