The present invention relates to pumps, and more particularly to pumps which are used to draw liquidinto the long legs of siphons. 1 l c The principal object of the present inven tion is. to provide the hollowcylinder, which is generally used in pumps of this type, with acoinbined piston and valve wherebyfliquid may be drawn into the cylinder from the source of supply and held therein in readiness for use. To the accomplishment of this object, a feature of the inventioncontemplates the provision, in a pump adapted to be connected to the long leg of a siphon provided with a cylinder having an inlet, an outlet, and a valve seat adjacent the outlet, of a piston rod, and a piston secured thereto movable from a position a'd'acent the inlet to aposition adjacent the outlet to vfill the cylinder with liquid from the source of supply and also movable into engagement with the valve seat to prevent the flow of liquid through the outlet.
Broadly considered the piston may be constructed of any suitablematerial. Theuse of a leather piston is disadvantageous, however, because it is not flexible enough to accommodate itself to restrictions in the hollow cylinder due to dents caused by the accidental dropping of the cylinder and because it shrinks in size as it dries through disuse. I V 7 Accordingly, another object of the present invention is to provide the hollow cylinder with a piston which will be flexible enough to accommodate itself to restrictions in the cylinder caused by dents and which will not shrink in size through disuse.

In the broader aspects of the invention the sponge-rubber piston may be used merely to draw liquid into the cylinder, but it is preferred to also utilize the sponge-rubber piston as a valve in accordance with the principal object of the present invention.

Referring to the drawings the pump 5 (Fig. i) is adapted to be connected to the 6 of, a siphon, the short leg v screen 11 in order'to filter the liquid flowin into the cylinder.
The other end ofthe cylinder 9 is enlarged by means of a flange 12 and this flange is screw threadedto receive the threads on an outletcap 18. The outlet cap 13 is shaped to form an enlarged chamber 1 1 having an fit) annular valve seat'l5 therein;
Secured to the outlet cap 13 is a depending tube 16 through which a hollow piston rod 17 isniounted to 'slide'f'reely. The hollow piston rod 17, near its upper end, is provided with a shoulder 18 which carries a cylindrical block of sponge-rubber 19 interposed between two metal washers 20 and 21, smaller indiameter' than the sponge-rubber. The'block and washers are held in place on the shoulder '18 by a headed screw 22 which fits into the upper end of the hollow rod 17. During this movement the piston creates a condition of unbalanced pressure between the interior of the cylinder and the surface of the liquid in the source of supply thus causing liquid to flow through the siphon and fill the'cylinder. The liquid is preventedfroin flowing out of the cylinder 9 by the pist'on'19 which acts as a valveengagedwith the valve seat 15.
In order to unseat the piston 19 from the valveseat" 15 and'thus permit liquid to flow from the chamber 14 through the apertures 23 into the hollow rod 17 from which the liquid may bedischarged into a bottle shown in construction lines in'Fig. 2, the tube 16 carries a sliding sleeve 24; provided with a series of integralinturned prongs 25 which extend through elongated openings 26 in the tube '16 and engage tlieextei'ior of the hollow rod 17. The hollow rod 17 is provided with anarinulargroove 27 into which the prongs 25 spring when the piston 19 enthe valve seat 15. The sleeve '24 is provided with a bell-shaped. portion 28 constructed to engage the mouth of'the bottle to be filled and hold the pump upright thereon. The bell-shaped portion '28 is provided with a series of air-holes 29 and a series of nodes 30 to insure the free exit of air from the bottle during the filling operation.
WVhen the piston 19 has been drawn from the dotted line position of Fig. 2 into the position of Fig. 3 the cylinder is filled with liquid from the source of supply, but this liquid is prevented from flowing through the apertures 23 into the hollow 17 by the piston which acts as a valve en gaged with the valve seat. When thes l'eeve 24 engages the mouth or" the bottle, into which the hollow rod 17 extends, theweight of the parts causes'the' sleeve 24:- to'move' relatively to the tube 16 from the position of Fig. 3 to the position of Fig. 2 thereby unseatin'g the piston 19 from the valve seat 15 to permit the liquid to flow from the chamber 14 through the apertures '23 into the hollow rod 16 -from which'the'liq'uid is discharged into the bottle. When the bottle is filled the pump is removed from; the mouth of the bottle. Immediately the sleeve 2 1,
piston rod 17 and piston 19 drop into the position of Fig. 3 thus shutting oii further discharge of liquid until thepump'is again positioned on another bottle wlien the valve is reopened.
In order to prevent foaming in thetbettle during the filling operation the open end of the hollow rod 17 is provided with a discharge tip 31 having two slots 32 which discharge the liquid laterally of the hollow rod.

It will be readily understood by those,
skilled in the art that even though the cylinder is dented-by accidents thespoi'ige-rubber, being elastic, will yield enough to permit it to pass the restriction without 'sticln ing, and that the portion of the sponge-rubber projecting beyond the periphery of the washer 20 will cooperate with the valve'seat 15 to shut-0H the discharge of liquid from the cylinder in a reliable-and certain manner.
It will be clear also to those'ski lled in this class ot'devices and with the general objects of the present invention in view, that changes piston rod may be made in the details of structure, the described and illustrated embodiment thereof being intended as an exploitation of its underlying essentials, the features whereof are definitely stated in their true scope in the claims herewith. lVhat is claimed as new, is:
1. In a pump adapted to be connected to the long leg of a siphon, the combination with a cylinder having an inlet, an outlet, and a valve seat'adjacent the outlet, a'piston rod, a piston rigidlysecured to the rod movable from a position adjacent the inlet to a position adjacent the outlet to fill the cylinder with liquid from the source of supply, and a valve engaged with the valve seat to prevent the flow of the liquid through the outlet,of means engaged by the mouthof the bottle for unseating the valve from the valve seat to permit liquid to fiow through the outlet. In a pump adapted to be connected to the long leg of a siphon, the combination with a cylinder, having an, inlet, an outlet, and a valve seat adjacent the outlet, a hollow piston rod extending through the outlet for conducting liquid from the cylinder into the bottle to be filled and a piston secured to the rod movable from a position adjacent the inlet to a position adjacent the outlet into engagement with the valve seat to fill the cylinder with liquid from the source of supply and prevent the flow of liquid through the hollow rod, of means engaged by the mouth of the bottle for unseating the piston from the valve seat to permit liquid to flow through the hollow piston rod.
3. In a pump adaptedto be connected to the long leg of a siphon, the combination with a cylinder, having inlet and outlet caps, a valve seat on the outlet cap, and a hollow rod constructed to conduct liquid from the cylinder through the outlet cap into a bottle, of a piston secured to the rod and movable from a position. adjacent the inlet cap to a position where it seats on the valve seat to fill the cylinder with liquid from the source of supply and prevent the flow of liquid through the hollow rod, and means movable relatively to the outlet cap for unseating the piston to permit liquid to flow through the hollow rod.

A pump adapted to be connected to the long leg of a siphon having, in combination, a cylinder having an inlet, an outlet and a valve seat adjacent the outlet; a piston rod; a piston secured thereto movable from a position adjacent the inlet to a position where its seats on the valve seat to fill the cylinder from the source of supply and prevent the flow of liquid through the outlet; said piston rod being constructed to extend within a bottle and conduct the fluid from the cylinder to the bottle when the piston is unseated from the valve seat, and a sleeve,

5; In a pump adapted to be connected to the long leg of a siphon, the combination with a cylinder having an inlet, an outlet, a valve seat adjacent the outlet, and a depending apertured tube, of a hollow apertured piston rod freely movable in said tube for conducting liquid from the cylinder into the bottle to be filled, a piston secured to the rod movable from a position adjacent the inlet to a position adjacent the outlet into engagement with the valve seat to fill the cylinder from the source of supply and prevent the -flow of liquid from the cylinder into the apertures of the hollow rod, a sleeve 'mounted to slide on the tube having intu'rned prongs extending through the apertures of the tube, and an annular groove on the exterior surface of the piston rod arranged to receive the prongs when the piston is seated on the valve seat, said prongs being also adapted to grip the exterior surface of the rod below the. annular 'groove to hold the piston permanently unseated from the valve seat.

In a pump adapted to be connected to the long leg of a siphon, the combinationv of a cylinder having an inlet, an outlet, and a valve seat, of a piston rod, and a piston secured thereto movable from a position adjacent the inlet to a position adjacent the outlet into engagement with the valve seat a to. fill the cylinder with liquid from the source of supply and prevent the flow of liquid from the cylinder, and means for lifting the piston off the valve seat to permit the flow of liquid from the cylinder.

In a pump adapted to be connected to the long leg of a siphon, the combination with a cylinder having an inlet, an outlet, and an enlarged chamber adjacent the outlet, a valve seat in the chamber, of a hollow pistonrod closed at one end and open at its other end and having apertures nearer its closed end than its open end and a piston secured to the rod between said apertures and the closed end of the rod movable from a position adjacentthe inlet into engagement with the valve seat to fill the cylinder with liquid from the source of supply and prevent the flow of liquid from the chamber into the apertures of the hollow rod.

In a pump adapted to be connected to the long leg of a siphon, the combination of a cylinder screw threaded at both ends, an inlet cap threaded on one end of the cylinder, an outlet cap having a chamber therein threaded on the other end of thecylinder, a depending apertured tube secured to the outlet cap, a Valve seat in the chamber, a hollow piston rod, having an annular groove, slidably mounted in the tube, a piston secured to the rod movable from a position adjacent the inlet cap into engagement with the valve seat to fill the cylinder with liquid from the source of supply and pre vent the flow of liquid from the cylinder into the hollow rod, and a sleeve movably mounted on the tube having yielding means extending through the apertures in the tube arranged to spring into the annular groove on the, rod when the piston engages the valve seat. n

In a pump adapted to be connected to the long leg of a siphon the combination with a cylinder having an inlet, an outlet and a valve seat interposed between the inlet and the outlet, a piston rod, and a piston on the rod movable in contact-with the cylinder in one direction to fill the cylinder from the sourceof supply and also movable at the limit of itsmovement in said direction into engagement with the valve seat to prevent the flow of liquid'through the outlet, of means engaged by the bottle for unseating the piston from the valve seat to permit liquid to flow through'the outlet.
10. In a pump adapted tobe connected to the long leg of a siphon, the combination with a cylinder'having an inlet, an outlet, and a valve seat interposed between the inlet and the outlet, apiston'rod, and a cylindrical piston having its peripheral surface movable in contact with the cylinder to fill the cylinder with liquid'from the source of supply, and having one of its end faces movable into engagement with the valve seat to prevent the flow of liquid through the outlet, of means engaged by the bottle for unseating the piston from the valve seat to permit-liquid to flow through the outlet.
