Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
COLUMBUS O. TROUTMAN. OF NELSON FURNACE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOSITIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,655, dated August 10, 1875; application filed August 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, COLUMBUS O. TROUT- MAN, of Nelson Furnace, in the county of Nelson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Composition; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in a medical composition for the cure of chills, and is composed of the following ingredients, and substantially in the following proportions, viz: bitter-root, (silk-weed root,) eight ounces; mandrake, oneeighth of an ounce; blood-root, one-sixteenth of an ounce; prickly-ash bark, one-sixteenth of an ounce.
The above ingredients are out fine or pulverized, and then steeped for about two weeks in one quart of diluted alcohol, when it is ready for use. I
This medicine is to be used as follows: One teaspoonful in a wine-glass of water, to be taken before eating. It may be sweetened, if desired. If this does not produce two or three operations of the bowels per day, the dose may be increased on the second and third days to two or three teaspoonfuls, according to the effect or strength of the patient. Patients whose bowels are lax, and delicate females and children, will take half a teaspoonful,
and increase or diminish the dose according to the effect. This will soon completely cure chills. One dose frequently cures dysentery or summer-complaint. V
I do not confine myself to the precise proportions of the ingredients herein mentioned, as they may, perhaps, be varied according to the circumstances of the case for which the compound is to be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described medicinal composition, consisting of bitter-root, (silk-weed root,) man drake-root, and prickly-ash bark, in the proportions described, steeped in diluted alcohol, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
